motd not compiled properly or ?

2008-11-19 Thread Lei Chen
Hi there,

I have compiled myself a RELENG_7 stable version of 7 branch.

I did a fresh install on 7.1_prerelease, and cvsup -g -L 2
stable-xxx-cvsup-file
make buildworld, everything goes as it should.

reboot, mergemaster command shows on file motd
--7.1_PRERELEASE
++7??:??:??
rest of motd is the same

now, based on the above showed result, I pressed d to keep original
version, because I don't want to have a system message shows 7:??:??:??

Now my question is, how do I just compile the motd in source tree, and
reinstall just that? Maybe recompile it may make it shows proper version
string.
Or if there's a method beside make buildworld again, it takes ages on my
laptop.

There was a bsdforums.org before, and closed down, and now
http://daemonforums.org,
I don't see the point of having an official forum from freebsd.

If for announcement purpose, a dynamic webpage should do just fine.
Totally my own idea

usb kbd and ums problem

2008-05-28 Thread Lei Chen
I have a problem with my newly installed Freebsd6.3. I use USB keyboard and
mouse, when start it all goes well, but after system boot process initalize
usb2 controllers, both my keyboard and mouse disappear. I have to physically
unplug them and plug them in again to use them.

I have ums_load=YES and ukbd_load=YES in /boot/loader.conf, but not seems
to solve the issue.

PS. when I plug both keyboard and mouse into an external usb hub, it works
seamlessly.

Any ideas?

laptop with another monitor X configuration

2005-07-18 Thread Lei CHEN
Hi experts,

I am looking a way to use both the laptop native lcd monitor and
another CRT monitor.

I pluged in the monitor, nothing happens. I can only switch between
them by pressing the Fn+monitorSwitch button on my keyboard.

I modified /etc/X11/XF86Config, as in the attachment. I have changed
few sections according to some resources I found by googling.

Has anyone got the same situation, please send me a copy of your
XF86Config or Xorg config file.

Thanks in advanced.
LEI

disabling ACPI

2004-11-17 Thread LEI CHEN
Hi all,

Since I updated my box to 5-STABLE, I have ACPI problem, and I sort of
unlike it. So I am wondering how to disable acpi at startup?

And also, when I added apm to kernel, after restart with acpi disabled, it
says that /dev/apm does not exist, what would be the problem and how to add
apm into /dev/apm?

Cheers,

LEI

about the tmpmfs=YES in rc.conf

2004-11-10 Thread LEI CHEN
Hi guys,

I have just upgraded to 5-stable branch, and I noticed that the
tmpmfs=YES and tmpsize=20m options can be put into /etc/rc.conf
directly to create a memory file system automatically.

My question is do I need to comment out the line to mount tmp on startup
in the file /etc/fstable if I added those two options above into
rc.conf?

Cheers,
LEI CHEN

Re: about the tmpmfs=YES in rc.conf

2004-11-10 Thread LEI CHEN
I've just added those two options into /etc/rc.conf and commented out
the line in /etc/fstab.

It works! :)

df -h output is :
Filesystem size used avail capacity Mounted on
...
...
/dev/md031M 16k 28M0%/tmp

I am just wondering what would be the mfs size that suitable for me? I
have PIII 850 256MB laptop.

Cheers,
LEI

Yesterday, I have committed a couple of enhancements to the tmpmfs in CURRENT.
If you plan on using tmpmfs=YES, mail me privately and I'll tell you how to
merge the changes with your existing setup once the tmpmfs stuff is merged
from CURRENT to RELENG_5 (in a few days).

My question is do I need to comment out the line to mount tmp on

Do you have a separate disk partition that is mounted as /tmp? If yes, then
mounting an md file system over /tmp will probably conflict with your current
setup and you'll have to remove the entry from fstab (or at least comment it
out, while you are checking the tmpmfs stuff).

yes, I've read this in the handbook, /usr/obj shadows /usr/src
  directories.

 Cool :)

But how can I put it into memory?

Using mdmfs(8). The mdmfs(8) utility is what does all the work behind
 the tmpmfs=YES option in rc.conf.

I've found this url
http://bsdvault.net/sections.php?op=viewarticleartid=53
very helpful.

But I got only 256Mb of memory, so I can't mount 300Mb mfs into RAM. And
therefore I can only mount 128Mb or so. Well in this case, would there
be a memory overflow during make world? And what to do if this is the
case?

Cheers,
LEI
