Re: Java without Motif/X?

2006-02-03 Thread Nick Triantos
OK, thanks very much. I'm going to look for a different tool that doesn't
pull in all of Java.

you've all been a great help.

Is it possible to replace Motif with QT, GTK, etc?

Not with the swing bindings, I don't think so. But, there are GTK
bindings
for
Java separately.

Java without Motif/X?

2006-01-31 Thread Nick Triantos

Greetings,

Has anyone successfully gotten Java (1.4 or 1.5) running on FreeBSD without
Motif/X? I'd like to run a gui-less Java app on my server, and would strongly
prefer to not install all of X + Motif, and all its potential security issues,
just to get Java running.

Thanks in advance,
-Nick

Answering machine / voicemail -- email?

2006-01-29 Thread Nick Triantos

Hi all,

I'm running a decently fast server with FreeBSD 5.4. I'd like to set up
a way that the box can act as a voicemail server, and turn the messages into
emails.

I see Asterisk as a possible solution, but it seems awfully heavyweight for
what I want. Are there any lighter-weight ways to achieve this?

If Asterisk is the way to go, what's the cheapest modem card I can buy (for
a PCI Express-based Dell SC 420) that can answer the phone, and let the machine
receive these calls? It's for use in my home, so it's only 1 analog phone
line running into the house right now.

thanks,
-Nick

jdk15 without having to install X Windows?

2005-10-24 Thread Nick Triantos

Hi,

I'm trying to install JDK15 (from ports: java/jdk15) on a server that
does not have X Windows installed. It appears from the Makefile that
Java is dependent upon OpenMotif, which in turn is dependent upon a
bunch of X client libs.

Does anyone have experience with installing Java without any X windows
support? I'd like the keep the number of installed packages on this
server to a bare minimum.

thanks,
-Nick

Anyone have any ideas? I'm still a bit stumped as to why the stock 5.3
fxp driver does not work with my Sonoma-based laptop.

thanks all,

It is.
Any clues? It looks like a fix has been applied to the fxp driver,
in time for rel 5.3, that should have added alviso chip support.
Maybe I'm missing some other core logic driver, I really don't know.

Hmm, what are you referring to here?
IANAE, so please hang on in case someone (who likely isn't sitting
at their desk on a Sunday afternoon) knowledgeable comes along;
however, I see no mention of i915 either in the manpage for fxp(4),
nor can I grep Alviso or i915 in any files under /src/sys/pci or
/src/sys/net. Google doesn't turn up much, either.
The thing is pretty new, so I'd wonder if it's supported. You can
definitely take a look at the HCL at the website. I'll hope for your
sake it is --- like I said, IANAE. But, I do wonder...

Support for Alviso (Intel i915) chipset networking?

2005-04-17 Thread Nick Triantos
Hi,
I just bought a Sony VGN-S380 laptop, which is based on Intel's Sonoma
platform. This includes the Intel i915 chipset. I'm looking for
ethernet (not wireless) drivers for it, the fxp driver reluctantly
loads, but doesn't recognize that there's a compatible card in my system.

I'm running the stock FreeBSD 5.3 system, cleanly installed. The
GENERIC kernel is still what's on there.

I see this:
  root# kldload -v if_fxp
  module_register: module pci/fxp already exists!
Module pci/fxp failed to register: 17
  module_register: module cardbus/fxp already exists!
Module cardbus/fxp failed to register: 17
  module_register: module fxp/miibus already exists!
Module fxp/miibus failed to register: 17
  Loaded if_fxp, id=4
  root# kldstat
  Id Refs AddressSizeName
...
   41 0xc1f23000 8000if_fxp.ko
However, ifconfig does not show an interface to this card (it shows lo0

Error writing disk when using fdisk from sysinstall

2003-07-13 Thread Nick Triantos
Hi,

I'm running FreeBSD 5.1-RELEASE on a modern (~8mo old)
PC. I am trying to add a new Western Digital 200GB
IDE drive to my system (through a Promise Ultra DMA100
controller), and when I try to (W)rite changes to the
disk, I get an error dialog box saying ERROR: Unable
to write to disk ad4!, then Disk Partition write
returned an error status.

When I first start the fdisk gui from sysinstall, it
complains about the geometry (37621C/16H/63S) and
tries to correct it to 24321C/255H/63S (though the
original is the correct geometry). I am unable to set
the geometry, when I try to change it back, I get the
error that it's set incorrectly.

From my boot messages, here's the disk and IDE
controller card I'm using.

atapci1: Promise PDC20268 UDMA100 controller port

ad4: 190782MB WDC WD2000JB-34EVA0 [387621/16/63] at
ata2-master UDMA100

Anyone have any ideas? Please CC this email address,
I can't keep up with the volume on these lists so I'm
not subscribed.

thanks mucho,
-Nick
