6.0-R, ICH6 and SATA problems

2005-12-31 Thread bcsfd204
Hi.
I'm running 6.0-R on a Shuttle SB95P V2 that is using the ICH6 and
SATA150 disks.
I'm getting recurring failures that either hang the machine or cause a
reboot.
The following messages appear to be common to all of the failures.
Typos are mine. :-)
ata2 disconnect requested
ar0 Failure - RAID0 array broken
ar0 Writing of Intel MatrixRAID metadata is NOT supported yet
subdisk4: detached
ad4: Detatched
ata2: DISCONNECTED

I dug around the mailing list archives but I could not find something
that seemed to match what I'm seeing.
The machine has gotten to the point where it hangs about half way
through startup of KDE. (Sometimes, CNTL-ALT-BACKSPACE will break it
and force an automatic reboot.)
I have replaced both hard drives with no change.
The disk controller is on the mother board so I switched the SATA leads
from master to slave and back again with no change.

I'm not sure where to go with this.
The man pages seem to indicate the ICH6 chip is supported.
The notations on read/write vs read-only support for Intel MatrixRAID
leave me confused given the message ar0 Writing of Intel MatrixRAID
metadata is NOT supported yet.
It's possible I did something wrong in the CMOS setup (there was
comments in the man pages that I didn't understand about CMOS vormat vs
formatting with ATACONTROL.)

I'm attaching the usual DOC.
TIA for any help you can provide.

The following dmesg was taken after a reboot following one of the

being demounted.

Problems with SATA drive on a Shuttle

2005-10-05 Thread bcsfd204
Hi.
I'm having problems with FBSD 5.4-S on a machine I built.
It is a Shuttle XPC with SATA150 drives.

This is typical of the messages I get:
initiate_write_filepage: already started
ad5: WARNING no status, reselecting device
ad5: timeout sending command=ca
ad5: error issuing WRITE_DMA command

I found some hits on the mailing list indicating a possible hardware
problem.
I have replaced both SATA drives and switched the SATA connections from
the secondary socket to the primary socket.
(The drive controller is built into the motherboard.)
This happens on both drives but the one with the / filesystem is hit
harder with this.
I have swap partitions on both drives.
Nothing has helped.

I'm considering installing Suse Linux on the machine to see of it is a
software problem with FreeBSD.
I've also thought about trying one of the 6.0-BETAs to see if that
makes a difference.

Any ideas would be welcome.
Thanks...
