I am using the > PS2 convertor. > i'm using FreeBSD 5.1 p10, but since my KVM is USB only i have it plugged in using the USB port. I otherwise love the keyboard and mouse, but if i can't use it with FreeBSD i'll probably take it back, since i only use my windows box for playing games and such, and do most of my real work on my BSD box. not being able to type at a sufficient speed is a tremendous pain. i have noticed one thing, that in windows if i'm holding a key down and i press another key, it stops the held down key, prints the currently hit key and then stops. for example... kg in FreeBSD if i'm holding down a key and press another key it prints the pressed key once and then resumes spitting out the still held down key, for example kgkkk is there a way to get freebsd to use the first (windows) behavior? as i think that will help with the slight bit of lag i'm getting in BSD causing characters to double print. -kirt ___ [EMAIL PROTECTED] mailing list http://lists.freebsd.org/mailman/listinfo/freebsd-questions To unsubscribe, send any mail to "[EMAIL PROTECTED]"
Logitech MX Duo troubles (fast RF wireless keyboard and mouse)
i recently had a small child (my daughter) jump into my lap while drinking a mr. pibb which then ended up pouring almost directly into my old keyboard. while i have attemtpted to clean that keyboard out (washed it thoroughly), i'm still waiting for it to dry before testing it. so, in the mean time, i thought i'd go ahead and get a new keyboard. since staples and the other local computer stores don't carry my keyboard of choice, i "settled" for the next best thing, which was the logitech MX duo (which is the logitech elite wireless keyboard and the MX700 mouse). both of these work perfectly in windows, even through my KVM (an IoGear miniview USB KVM model G-CS104U). but, when i use the KVM to switch to the freebsd box, it notices the USB devices like this... uhub3: Texas Instruments TUSB2046 hub, class 9/0, rev 1.10/1.25, addr 2 uhub3: 4 ports with 4 removable, self powered ukbd0: Logitech USB Receiver, rev 1.10/21.00, addr 3, class 3/1 kbd0 at ukbd0 ums0: Logitech USB Reveiver, rev 1.10/21.00, addr 3, class 3/1 ums0: 7 buttons and Z dir then, the keyboard will work, although it has a tendency to "feel laggy" and sometimes repeats letters if i'm typing quickly, and the mouse doesn't work at all. so... i need to figure out why the keyboard is laggy to begin with (even though it is perfectly responsive in windows) and why the mouse doesn't even show up. thanks in advance... ;D kirt ___ [EMAIL PROTECTED] mailing list http://lists.freebsd.org/mailman/listinfo/freebsd-questions To unsubscribe, send any mail to "[EMAIL PROTECTED]"
vulnerability in su?
while recently cvsup'ing my box here at home, i had a weird thing happen... i had already built world, built and installed the kernel, installed world (including all appropriate reboots), and when i brought it back up, but prior to running mergemaster, i popped the jumper on the circuit the box is on. my ups is somewhat wimpy, and only lasts a couple minutes (the fuse trips all the time too.. stupid apartment wiring can't handle 2 computers and the washer and dryer at once =P ) so i made it a priority to go ahead and shut the box down. after fixing said jumper and bring the box back up i noticed that i could now su like a madman, without ever being prompted for passwords. i then remembered that i hadn't run mergemaster yet, so i ran it again and rebooted for safe measure and su started asking for passwords again. is this a known issue? i didn't search to hard for a fix or anything since i quickly fixed it myself, but i thought that a situation like that could make for some interesting (read *bad*) situations. -kirt ___ [EMAIL PROTECTED] mailing list http://lists.freebsd.org/mailman/listinfo/freebsd-questions To unsubscribe, send any mail to "[EMAIL PROTECTED]"
switching IDE controllers
i've checked the handbook, man pages, web, etc. for info regarding this and i'm still not entirely sure as to how i should go about it. FreeBSD daemon.pwnd.local 4.7-STABLE FreeBSD 4.7-STABLE #6: Sun Mar 30 08:50:48 EST 2003 [EMAIL PROTECTED]:/usr/obj/usr/src/sys/DAEMONSMP i386 dual AMD 1200 MP, 512 RAM my original FreeBSD server was an older PC that did not have an ATA100 IDE controller on-board, so i used a Promise TX2 ATA100 controller for all my drives, and just left the CD and DVD-roms on the slower on-board controller. now, later down the road, i've upgraded quite a bit and the server has an on-board AMD 766 ATA100 Controller and i'd like to add some drives to the setup. i figured now would be as good a time as any to move my main drive off the Promise card and on to the motherboard. here are the 4 drives i currently have (from dmesg) ad4: 19092MB [38792/16/63] at ata2-master UDMA100 ad5: 38166MB [77545/16/63] at ata2-slave UDMA100 ad6: 38166MB [77545/16/63] at ata3-master UDMA100 ad7: 38166MB [77545/16/63] at ata3-slave UDMA100 and the CD-ROM and DVD are on the on-board secondary IDE channel. i want to take ad4, which is where FreeBSD is installed and all of my main partitions are (/ , /var , /tmp , /usr , and the swap), and move it to the on-board controller. the other 3 drives are nothing but data for samba shares. i am not using the boot manager. i've gathered that i will have to change the mount points in /etc/fstab to reflect the new drive location (ad0), but past that i am unsure as to what all needs to be done to have the machine boot correctly. i'm also a little afraid to just "experiment" because i have a lot of really important stuff on here. =) thanks in advance. -- -- kirt -- www.pwnd.org ___ [EMAIL PROTECTED] mailing list http://lists.freebsd.org/mailman/listinfo/freebsd-questions To unsubscribe, send any mail to "[EMAIL PROTECTED]"

Re: MBR manipulated ???
not completely sure if it's ok to be giving windoze advice on a freebsd mailing list, but have you tried right clicking on My Computer, selecting "Manage" and checking whether or not the D: partition is still on the disk? -- kirt - Original Message - From: "Tim DeMonte" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> To: <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> Sent: Monday, February 10, 2003 3:11 PM Subject: MBR manipulated ??? > Hi, > > If anyone can suggest a solution to my problem, it would be greatly > appreciated... Re: question
here is what i did recently (this is the very vanillla way) (as root) cd /usr/ports/x11/kde3/ make clean install if it completes the make without error, and you have already configured XFree86 then it's as simple as creating .xinitrc in your home directory containing 'startkde'. use your favorite editor, or if you haven't picked on yet.. (yet again, as root) cd echo 'startkde' > .xinitrc startx if you haven't configured XFree86 yet, get your hardware information together and run... xf86config good luck -- -- kirt -- pwnd.org - Original Message - From: "dark dragonz" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> To: <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> Sent: Sunday, February 09, 2003 10:04 AM Subject: question > what is your recommended configuration to make KDE > working properly? > thank you for your answer > > __ > Do you Yahoo!? > Yahoo!
