i put 

exec gnome-session

in a file i created my self calt 

~/.xsession 

but when i do startx gnome does not start
when i do gnome-session in a xterm gnome does start but gives this warning

Could not look up internet address for .
This will prevent GNOME from operating correctly.
It may be possible to correct the problem by adding
 to the file /etc/hosts.

What do i have to change in /etc/hosts ?
