RE: A question on AppleLaser Writer 16/1600 PS [off-topic-ish]
I have been trying to find the answer to this question for years. The apple service manual says to replace the mother board! The best solution I have found other than taking it in for service is to get another ROM. A version 3.0 ROM fixes password problems and has the side effect of clearing the password. I have not done this, and i only found one person online that has verified that it worked. sunrem.com used to have them, but they are backordered now. As soon as I find a 3.0 rom im going to try it on my printer -- Alvaro Gil http://www.AlvaroGil.com '84 Volvo 242 Turbo (Silver) 15 psi '97 Leopard Gecko (White, Yellow, Black) NJIT Mechanical Engineering Student To Unsubscribe: send mail to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with unsubscribe freebsd-questions in the body of the message

Wow, thanks for all the suggestions :) I will dedicate myself this weekend to the problem and pursue them. The 20Kg beast is looking at me woefully as I type, poor thing has been in a cold cellar for 2 years. ( aside ... Jeez, I have never had a laser printer before. Toner cartrdiges require a second mortghage to buy ...at least here in Holland... and I thought Epson Inkjet cartridges were expensive.) My conclusion was from reading the handbook that you do have to contact Apple - trouble is the person who gave it to me is a bit vague about how he used it. I googled but didn't get the hits some of you report, maybe I spelt apple as orange .. :) -- Regards Cliff Sarginson The Netherlands [ This mail has been checked as virus-free ] To Unsubscribe: send mail to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with unsubscribe freebsd-questions in the body of the message

The PDF manual for this printer is available on the Apple web site, although it requires some hunting around. That manual says that it does lpr/lpd. Unfortunately I couldn't find anything about clearing the TCP/IP password, either there or with a couple of Google searches. -Warren Block * Rapid City, South Dakota USA To Unsubscribe: send mail to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with unsubscribe freebsd-questions in the body of the message

I realize it does lpd/lpr: Apple has supported that for years. My suggestion was directed at seeing if and how it advertised itself on the network. Appletalk is useful, if annoying, in that devices broadcast their presence regularly. If it did show up, the Appletalk utility could perhaps be employed to fix the password/IP address problems. According to all the search engines I've tried, there is only one recourse: contact Apple. Then you have to convince them you haven't stolen the printer. Then, if they like, they'll tell you the master password that is somehow based on MAC address. *If* the netmask is correct, and the default gateway setting not needed, a serial connection might be able to change the IP address only. -Warren Block * Rapid City, South Dakota USA To Unsubscribe: send mail to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with unsubscribe freebsd-questions in the body of the message
