The versions in /usr/src/contrib and in ports are pretty much
identical, if you're running an up-to-date 4-STABLE, 5-CURRENT or a
recent release. If you don't need anything unusual like Cyrus SASL
support, then just stick with the system version.

Even if you're running an older system version, so long as you
cvsup(1) to the latest sources on your release branch (for all release
branches back to RELENG_4_3_0 plus RELENG_3), the sendmail supplied
with there has tended to get patched very promptly against all the
recently announced vulnerabilities --- although it may not be the
latest version, it should be safe to run.

In short, you shouldn't need to install the ports version of sendmail,
although you always have the option of doing so.

Cheers,

Matthew

The question has no useful meaning. Preferred for what? You need to define
what you want first. Only then can you determine what is best for you. Some
may say qmail, etc are better.
