$ grep ad /var/run/dmesg.boot

you had installed slice/part by sysinstall, so
1- by default b partitions are dedicated to swap part.
2- you haven't a swap partition in ad0s1
3- /var/run/dmesg.boot won't show you any infos about swap

4- type following command for getting infos about swap parts:
% swapinfo

Is /dev/ad0 there? /dev/ad0s1b ?

Do you have SCSI disks instead? A RAID?

Unable to find device node for /dev/ad0s1b in /dev!

2005-04-03 Thread Keith Rackleff
I had this same type problem. It appears that FreeBSD and the BIOS did
not select the proper geometry for the disk. I tried a different disk
on the same system, and I was able to install.

Knopptix reported a different geometry than FreeBSD, so I tried setting
the geometry to match what Knopptix reported, but, the installation
graphical fdisk told me the Knopptix geometry was unrealistic, and set
it back to the BIOS geometry.

I installed the system on a different drive, and then used the command
line fdisk command to partition the disk with the Knopptix geometry. I
was then able to set the labels and mount the errant drive.

Re: Unable to find device node for /dev/ad0s1b in /dev!

2005-02-16 Thread Sajith K
i did create the slices using default option (A)
and partions using default option (A).

now i see the following problem:

mounting error /mnt/dev/ad0s1f on /mnt/usr :
Input/output error

i think it is the problem with the disk geometry
i don't know what. i have a 80GB disk, and i tried
changing the mode from LBA to NORMAL to LARGE in the
BIOS setting but it didn't help. /usr is the the
last partition in the default list of partiontions.

thanks in advance for your time

sajith

Sounds like you forgot to allocate (and commit) the
 slices before you
 tried to create the partitions...
