Install question FreeBSD 4.8r13

2006-04-28 Thread Andy Kendall
I've had the above picked for me because it's going on a very limited
hardware resource. (1Gb HD, 16Mb RAM). I've created the two boot floppies
and booted the server fine. I ran the install and it copied in the /bin fine
but skipped the /crypto and another one. (I only the minimal install).

How do I now install the /crypt and other one please?

Can mount floppy well.

Any help appreciated.

Andy

Run sysinstall as root, pick configure and then distributions and
see if you can't get it from there.

Another strategy might be to try and get the stuff via ftp.

Good luck!

This is a common error message reflecting a user trying to install a port or
package. Try root prior to the install attempt, this should work better.
There are many tutorials and documentation that would help in this matter.
A simple google search will also assist. FreeBSD does have a high learning
curve that demands effort on your part. Read, Learn, Command.

1. Which application did you try to install?
2. Please give more lines (say, 20 to 30 or so) before the
Error code 1 line, because that's the place where the real
error is normally listed.

It may be possible that the port you're trying to install is
broken (doesn't compile cleanly) in your collection. If that's
the case, you may wish to update your ports collection and try
again. Perhaps the problem has been already fixed?

ipfw question (FreeBSD 4.11)

2005-01-03 Thread Gerard Meijer
I run apache webserver on my server with FreeBSD 4.11

I have a question about ipfw. I have the following rules in my /etc/ipfw.conf:

$cmd 00200 allow tcp from any to any 80 out via $pif setup keep-state
$cmd 00400 allow tcp from any to any 80 in via $pif setup keep-state

(with $pif being my NIC) Now, everything works fine for me, but I get a lot
(and I mean a lot) of these kind of messages in my log:

[Date] [time] [host] /kernel: ipfw: 299 Deny TCP a.b.c.d:80 e.f.g.h:4472 out
via em0
[Date] [time] [host] /kernel: ipfw: 499 Deny TCP e.f.g.h:1882 a.b.c.d:80 in via
em0

(with a.b.c.d being my ip and e.f.g.h being somebody elses ip).

I guess these people are not surfing through port 80??? Correct me if I'm
wrong. How can I change ipfw's rules so that these people aren't blocked
anymore?

Thanks in advance!

Device polling question - Freebsd 4.9

2004-09-22 Thread TM4525
I'm a bit confused about device polling. I put a counter in em_poll(), and
then enabled device polling for 10 seconds and read back the counter, and it was
called 1.5million times. This is with virtually no network activity and HZ
set to the default of 100.

The docs seem to imply that the polling function gets called once per clock
tick, but that doesn't seem to be the case at all. I'm trying to figure the
reasoning behind mucking with the HZ value, which may affect some other things
and also seems to defeat the purpose of trying to reduce overhead.

With the HZ value at 100 the system easily passes 90K pps, but Im concerned
about what variations occur when the system is under load, or if there are
time-consuming activities (like extensive firewall rules).

Also, when using device polling, even under heavy network load top shows
the system to be almost completely idle. How can I gauge system usage when using
polling instead of interrupts? Its difficult to compare the 2 methods when
one of them can't be measured.

TIA

RE: Routing where can I ask a wirless routing question freebsd

2004-07-25 Thread Dan
Hello,

In using FreeBsd 5.2.1-Release I am running into some trouble. I have successfully
recompiled the kernel with support for atheros based wireless cards. I have also been
able to setup the card into access point Hostap mode correctly. I have tried the
bridging recommend in the FreeBSD wireless setup at
http://www.freebsd.org/doc/en_US.ISO8859-1/books/handbook/network-wireless.html but
was unsuccessful. I have configured the wireless adapter with it's own subnet of ip's
one for the actual box and the rest client ip''. The subnet is not the same as the one
on the wireless adapter. When I enable bridge mode as dicussed in the link above, I
can ping the ip allocated to the ethernet adapter and the one allocated to the
wireless adapter when wirelessly connected to the freebsd box, but when the bridging
is disabled I can only ping the ip assigned to the wireless adapter in the machine
when wirelessly connected. When I ssh to the box either with bridging on or off to the
wireless ip on the machine I can ping google.com and other common web sites. I need
help trying to route the adapted and client ip's to the internet.

cvsup ports question Freebsd 5.2

2004-02-06 Thread jens
Hi folks,
I have build the ports tree using the default ports-sup file tag
tag=.

I want to understand why my ports tree is wiped off when i change the tag
value to
RELENG_5_2_0_RELEASE
or
RELENG_5
or
RELENG_5_2

in order to get the ports updating. I followed the instructions of the bsd
manual assuming to stick to the latest stable version/branch.

Exerpt of the ports sup_file

# IMPORTANT: Change the next line to use one of the CVSup mirror sites
# listed at http://www.freebsd.org/doc/handbook/mirrors.html.
*default host=cvsup2.FreeBSD.org
*default base=/usr
*default prefix=/usr
*default release=cvs tag=RELENG_5_2_0_RELEASE
*default delete use-rel-suffix

does that mean there is no upgrade of the ports. I assume not because the
whole tree is wiped off.

Thanks.

That is what it means. The only tag for ports is tag=.. They may build
packages for 5.2-release but cvsup only knows about tag=. for
ports-all.
