Common problem. The issue isn't that the FreeBSD driver cannot talk to the SATA controller. It can do that just fine. The problem is that HP is using a modified metadata format on the disk drives. What you need to do is go into the Proliant BIOS and DISABLE the SATA raid. This of course means any raid arrays, mirrored or otherwise, that you have created, cannot be used from BIOS. Just leave the BIOS settings so that the SATA controller is enabled, but the RAID on the SATA controller isn't. Then boot FreeBSD 6.2. It will see 2 disk drives. (or more or however many you got) Now, if you want a raid mirror here is what you do. Load a scratch install of FreeBSD 6.2 on the first disk. Run atacontrol to create a mirror on both disks. This writes out a metadata format that FreeBSD's disk driver understands. This will trash your freebsd install of course. No problem. Reboot from the installation CD and now you will see the 2 disks, plus ar0 (the mirror) Install to that and your all set. Basically the only difference between doing it HP's way by creating the RAID from HP BIOS and doing it the FreeBSD way is that the HP BIOS is unaware of the FreeBSD metadata format so you cannot see or rebuild an array from BIOS that was created in FreeBSD, and FreeBSD is unaware of HP's metadata format so you cannot see or rebuild an array from FreeBSD that was created in BIOS As far as how the actual raid mirror works, it's exactly the same. In fact, better, since you can rebuild a FreeBSD array from FreeBSD and it's about 10 times faster than rebuilding it from HP's BIOS. Nothing? You're able to arp 192.168.64.1 and 192.168.64.3, can you ping them? Since you have an RFC-1918 address on both the inside and the outside, I assume you're running nat on this machine to translate internal machine traffic. It looks like you have all the routes you need, so my _guess_ at this point is that when the public address is up, the nat is preventing traffic from going out that interface without being translated. Once it has a public address, it can't route properly on the 192.168.64/22 space. Have a look at what you're using for nat. If you can't see anything obviously at odds, post your nat/firewall/related config. -- Bill Moran Collaborative Fusion Inc. No I can't ping them. Just to be sure I switched off the natd... Re: Ethernet not recognized
If I'm not wrong your lan card must be VIA VT6103L. In this case FreeBSD must support it. Post your dmesg please. Did you make any changes to the kernel? In the instructions that I follow in one link on your website, it says that is recognized automatically. What am I missing here? I'm new at unix or linux, I've only used windows and I like to learn something outside windows, but I didn't know it would be such a headache. The motherboard is a PC CHIPS P23G or something like that. I also tried to compile the X11 but it display an error trying to connect to freebsd.org, obviously because of the Ethernet card not recognized. Can someone help me with this??? ___ freebsd-questions@freebsd.org mailing list http://lists.freebsd.org/mailman/listinfo/freebsd-questions To unsubscribe, send any mail to [EMAIL PROTECTED] -- George Vanev ___ freebsd-questions@freebsd.org mailing list http://lists.freebsd.org/mailman/listinfo/freebsd-questions To unsubscribe, send any mail to [EMAIL PROTECTED]
Execute script every time a specified user logs in (FreeBSD 6.1)
Every time user X (for example) logs in the system I want to be executed some script. The user must not have the permission to change this behavior. Also the script must be run as root. Something like crontab, but depending on logins, not time Any ideas?! -- George Vanev ___ freebsd-questions@freebsd.org mailing list http://lists.freebsd.org/mailman/listinfo/freebsd-questions To unsubscribe, send any mail to [EMAIL PROTECTED]

If this user logs in via SSH you can use the ForceCommand keyword in sshd_config(5) to execute your script. The root part can be achieved with sudo(8). Regards, Pieter de Goeje Thanks, nice idea. But it seams I can't use it. Let me be more specific: If user X logs in then I want to be run /usr/bin/script -aq /path/user_X The file user_X must be protected from modifying/deleting Could this be done?! -- George Vanev ___ freebsd-questions@freebsd.org mailing list http://lists.freebsd.org/mailman/listinfo/freebsd-questions To unsubscribe, send any mail to [EMAIL PROTECTED]
