Hi,

How do I mount an NTFS formatted external harddisk plugged into the computer
using a usb cable? And what do i write in the /etc/fstab after being able to
successfully mount it manually?

I have some blurry understanding after reading a bit in handbook that the
harddisk's NTFS partition is at /dev/da0s1 by default. I have installed
ntfs-3g from ports.

Try mount_ntfs-3g /dev/da0s1 /path/to/mountpoint

Manuals and other such documentation serve as a pretty good medium.

In the mean time, the box is fully responsive on the network level

 OK, try a pkg_deinstall -f xf86-video-vga-4.1.0_2 and then a pkgdb -F

The pkgdb run should complain about a missing dependency, which you can
 safely delete.

That's just telling you that it can't update that app because the port
doesn't exist anymore. You have several options at that point. If you
want to keep it you can read the portmaster man page about +IGNOREME
files. If you don't need it anymore (and in this case you almost
certainly do not) then you can use 'portmaster -e xphelloworld' to
delete it (or just good old 'pkg_delete -f').

Since my machine has spent the last 48hrs or so rebuilding everything
 that depended on jpeg-6b and python25 (it's a pretty old machine), I've
been wondering if an option to say '*don't* rewrite the dependencies of
other ports to refer to the new version' would be a good solution here.

Normally this is a helpful thing to do, but when you're trying to
reinstall a few ports low in the dependency chain and then rebuild
everything that needs rebuilding it would be helpful to have the ones
that haven't been rebuilt still depend on the old (now deleted) package,
 so they can be identified.

That's an interesting idea, but with portmaster you can accomplish the
same thing with the -r option. Just use the -R option on successive
runs if the first one fails for some reason.

-r (and -Rr) don't help here, since lots of large ports depend on *both*
jpeg and python, and I was specifically trying to avoid rebuilding them
 all twice.

This is a situation (ports relying on 2 dependencies that both require
complete rebuilds) that is not easy to program for. Fortunately it
also does not come up very often.

AFAICT -r doesn't allow you to ask for two ports plus all
combined dependants at once. I ended up taking the pkg_info -R list for
both pkgs before the upgrade, sorting it into dependency order, and
stripping entries off the front every time something failed and I had to
restart, which is a little too manual for my taste :). (The list had to
be sorted, otherwise port A might depend on port B that came later in
the list, and when portmaster got to B in the list it would reinstall it
 again unnecessarily.)

For future reference you would have been better off if you had done
'sort -u' on the list then done 'portmaster `cat list`'. Portmaster
would then do all the dependency sorting for you, and it will only
rebuild each port on the list once.

As you can see, even with the usual kern.geom.debugflags workaround
(which GEOM knows about and then usually lets one use a used provider)
I'm not able to access da0s2 at all. But da0s2 is not used at all (it is
not even formatted).

Does anybody has any ideas why da0s2 is not available just because the
system is running from da0s1? When I boot from a fixit CDROM I can
access da0s2 just fine, of course...

How can I now put my ZFS pool onto da0s2? I even have done the
zpool create from the fixit CDROM and then copied over the
/boot/zfs/zfs.cache file. But then ZFS also has the same problem: it
cannot access da0s2 one booted into the regular system...

| The data for partition 4 is:
| UNUSED
| # dd if=/dev/zero of=/dev/da0s2 bs=1024 count=100
| dd: /dev/da0s2: Operation not permitted
| # zpool create zp1 /dev/da0s2
| cannot create 'zp1': permission denied

If I read correctly fdisk's output, your two slices overlap with 32 sectors.
1rst : start 32, size 1052608 ( so end = 1052608 + 32 )
2nd : start 1052608 (which is 1rst end )

BTW you could also use a bsdlabel on 1rst slice (using whole disk) to
put your zfs pool on.

Yes, this can be done piecemeal, after the fact, on an already configured
pool. That's how I did it on one of our servers. It was originally

configured using the device node names (da0, da1, etc). Then I set up the
second server, but used labels. Then I went back to the first server,
labelled the drives, and did zpool replace storage da0 label/disk01 for

each drive. Doesn't take long to resilver, as it knows that it's the same
 device.

It seems a very good practice but how did you do actually on your
first already configured server?
I am struggling with the followings:

1. on online disk, member of configured raidz pool, glabel label
fails with error message operation not permitted.
2. if I make disk offline, glabel succeed, but making disk back to
online clears label.

3. if I make disk offline, glabel succeed, but zpool replace pool
dev label fails with /dev/label/label is part of
 active pool pool
4. export pool, glabel, import pool neither works.

A detailed guide in for dummies style would be appreciated.

Thanks,
Gabor
