Possibly Key 3 = Safe mode (before USA or country), which includes, ref my
   http://www.berklix.com/~jhs/hardware/laptops/#loader.conf
the equivalent of loader command
   set hw.ata.atapi_dma=0

Please let me know if anything on my page above helps you,
please also let me know if you discover other magic Not on my page.
(I'm fighting a heap of old laptops, persuading them to upgrade :-))

Booting with Safe Mode (3) results in

Fatal trap 9: general protection fault while in kernel
cpuid 0 apcid 00

instuction pointer 0x70:0xc8c0

The last line printed before the crash is
ata5: [ITHREAD]

If people want details, I'll use a camera on the screen because
I only get about 5 seconds before the computer restarts.

Re: FreeBSD vs Region Code DVDs

2007-05-03 Thread Robert Gray
I had an issue with ripping some DVD's to my laptop before a trip I made
(note: no distribution occurred (for the lawyers :))). I wanted to
just use dd to do it, but dd would fail after a small amount of data was
read. If I first played a little of the DVD with mplayer, then dd would
work afterwards. It probably had something to do with mplayer
whispering sweet nothings to the DVD player.
Sean

I've had similar experiences with DaVinci Code and Casino Royal.
The error is:

Outputting to /big/MOVIE/CASINO/CASINO_ROYALE1-1.vob

  16MB of 6834MB written (0 %)

  acd0: FAILURE - READ_BIG MEDIUM ERROR asc=0x11 ascq=0x05
  acd0: FAILURE - READ_BIG MEDIUM ERROR asc=0x11 ascq=0x05

My work around so that I can watch the movie I rented is to skip
over the problem area (probably intensional by Hollywood)

vobcopy -b 50m

Try adjusting the offset-size to your needs.

FreeBSD 6.0-BETA3 panic: vm_fault

2005-08-31 Thread Robert Gray
I have a low end DELL Lattitude that has been successfully
running 5.4-RELEASE. I have tried loading 6.0-BETA3 three
times and it panics every time early while loading the Minimal
system. Does anyone else see this? (I haven't ruled out a disk problem)
Hand transcribed from the screen:

panic: vm_fault: fault on nofault entry:
c7229000 cpuid = 0
[thread pid 26 100026]
Stopped at kbd_enter_0x2b: nop

For the install process, I pick
Standard, Give the whole disk to slice1 for FreeBSD
and take the Auto partitions.
I ask for a Minimal install.

(side note: the new default partitions sizes seem strange:)
  1a / 512MB
  1b swap 230MB
  1d /var 1139MB
  1e /tmp 512MB
  1f /usr 708MB

I retried loading 5.4 Release, and it successfully installs.

Here is the dmesg from a working 5.4-RELEASE

4.5 RC1 testing, Linux compatability

2002-01-09 Thread Robert Gray

I did a fresh, Standard install of 4.5 RC1, selecting
kernel sources with X11. The basic install seemed fine.

But when I attempted
Would you like to enable Linux binary compatibility?,

The GUI screen said
Add of package linux_base-6.1 aborted, error 1 -
Please check the debug screen for more info.

and it said:

ldconfig: warning: /usr/local/lib: No such file or directory
ldconfig: /usr/local/lib/aout: No such file or directory
ldconfig: /usr/X11/lib/aout: No such file or directory
Linux mode is not enabled.

The linux kernel module could not be loaded.
Please enable linxu mode manually and retry.
