I also stumbled upon this problem when building glib manually (not from ports).
After peeking at the port's Makefile, I added "-Db_lundef=false" argument to
the meson invocation and the problem disappeared.

MFC r364480:

Merge commit 1ce07cd614be from llvm git (by me):

  Instantiate Error in Target::GetEntryPointAddress() only when
  necessary

  When Target::GetEntryPointAddress() calls
  exe_module->GetObjectFile()->GetEntryPointAddress(), and the returned
  entry_addr is valid, it can immediately be returned.

  However, just before that, an llvm::Error value has been setup, but
  in this case it is not consumed before returning, like is done
  further below in the function.

  In https://bugs.freebsd.org/248745 we got a bug report for this,
  where a very simple test case aborts and dumps core:

  * thread #1, name = 'testcase', stop reason = breakpoint 1.1
  frame #0: 0x002018d4 testcase`main(argc=1,
argv=0x7fffea18) at testcase.c:3:5
 1int main(int argc, char *argv[])
 2{
  -> 3return 0;
 4}
  (lldb) p argc
  Program aborted due to an unhandled Error:
  Error value was Success. (Note: Success values must still be checked
prior to being destroyed).

  Thread 1 received signal SIGABRT, Aborted.

Ah, so this is actually a duplicate of bug 248745, which I fixed in base
r364480. However, I forgot to MFC it in time for 12.2-RELEASE, so it was fixed
after that for stable/12 in base r367228.

Ed, do you think this would warrant an EN? I don't think lldb is completely
unusable in 12.2-R, as other debugging commands appear to work OK, but this is
still an annoying bug.

Add a few missed files to libclang_rt.profile-.a

Otherwise, programs compiled with -fprofile-instr-generate will
encounter undefined symbol errors during linking, for example
__llvm_profile_counter_bias, lprofSetRuntimeCounterRelocation and a few
others were missing from the profile library.

This version of LLDB has no plugin for the mipsassem language. Inspection of
frame variables will be limited.

Add a few missed files to libclang_rt.profile-.a

Otherwise, programs compiled with -fprofile-instr-generate will
encounter undefined symbol errors during linking, for example
__llvm_profile_counter_bias, lprofSetRuntimeCounterRelocation and a few
others were missing from the profile library.

No. Changing hardware is too expensive. Just replace thermal grease on CPU. :)

[Bug 250388] unable to make buildworld releng/12.1. clang always crashes

https://bugs.freebsd.org/bugzilla/show_bug.cgi?id=250388

--- Comment #11 from igor.polov...@gmail.com ---
I've found cause of clang crashes and rebooting while compilation. It just was
overheating of CPU when temperature of all cores raised above 70°C. Short time
compilations didn't give such behaviour. Sorry. It's my fault but I think this
case will be useful for someone with similar situation. Perhaps it's possible
to make special exception when clang crashes by similar cause and write
appropriate message to log.

This reproduces easily enough with devel/gmake (the port representation of what
they're trying to build) and the listed CFLAGS/CXXFLAGS pushed into the port's
Makefile

Can you come up with an actual test case? Saying "it doesn't work for my

very helpful...

I took a little bit of a look at this, and noted that lib/findprog-in.o ->
lib/libgnu.a which does appear on the cut off part of the linker command that
fails in the picture. AFAICT find_in_given_path does make the trip into
libgnu.a, annotated like so:

define dso_local i8* @find_in_given_path(i8* %0, i8* %1, i1 zeroext %2)
local_unnamed_addr #0 {
^4 = gv: (name: "find_in_given_path", summaries: (function: (module: ^0, flags:

0), insts: 119, calls: ((callee: ^9), (callee: ^5), (callee: ^8), (callee: ^3),
(callee: ^13), (callee: ^11), (callee: ^2), (callee: ^6), (callee: ^10)), refs:

Indeed, creating a test file via
$ objcopy -I binary -O elf64-x86-64 -B x86-64 --rename-section
.data=.this-is-a-really-long-name empty output.elf

ELF Tool Chain readelf by default shows:
$ readelf -S output.elf
There are 5 section headers, starting at offset 0x78:

Section Headers:
  [Nr] Name  Type Address   Offset

  O (extra OS processing required) o (OS specific), p (processor specific)

GNU readelf 2.33.1 shows:
$ /usr/local/bin/readelf -S output.elf
There are 5 section headers, starting at offset 0x78:

Section Headers:

(These differ only in the key.)

With -W GNU readelf shows:
$ /usr/local/bin/readelf -S -W output.elf
There are 5 section headers, starting at offset 0x78:

Section Headers:

  C (compressed), x (unknown), o (OS specific), E (exclude),
  l (large), p (processor specific)

While ELF Tool Chain prints on one line but does not widen the name:

$ readelf -S -W output.elf
There are 5 section headers, starting at offset 0x78:

[Bug 216316] objcopy (elfcopy) in 11 appears to have a regression compared to the version in 10

2021-01-31 Thread bugzilla-noreply
https://bugs.freebsd.org/bugzilla/show_bug.cgi?id=216316

--- Comment #10 from Michael Brown  ---
(In reply to Ed Maste from comment #8)

>From looking at elfcopy/binary.c and its create_binary() function: it appears
that elfcopy will use sh_offset to calculate the position within the final
binary file (rather than the LMA or even the VMA). Since sh_offset is
meaningless once the ELF headers have been stripped away, this behaviour is
provably incorrect for anything other than extracting a single section via "-j
".

Building elfcopy from source confirms this behaviour from the current code.

So, we have three possible behaviours:

1. binutils objcopy

Uses the section LMA to determine the offset within the output file. As above,
I would say that this behaviour is correct.

2. FreeBSD objcopy as present in binary distributions

Uses the section VMA to determine the offset within the output file. As above,
I would say that this behaviour is wrong.

3. FreeBSD objcopy as built from source

Uses the section sh_offset to determine the offset within the output file.
This behaviour is very definitely wrong.

I am puzzled why I get different behaviour from the FreeBSD binary and source
distributions, particularly since the use of sh_offset appears to have been
present since 2010.

[Bug 216316] objcopy (elfcopy) in 11 appears to have a regression compared to the version in 10

2021-01-30 Thread bugzilla-noreply
https://bugs.freebsd.org/bugzilla/show_bug.cgi?id=216316

--- Comment #9 from Michael Brown  ---
(In reply to Ed Maste from comment #8)

Thanks for taking a look. The multiple sections all with virtual memory
addresses of zero are correct: there are genuinely multiple disjoint address
spaces at runtime. For example: the real-mode code segment (.text16) and
real-mode data segment (.data16) may be placed arbitrarily in base memory once
loaded, and virtual addresses within those segments are just 16-bit offsets
from the start of each segment, dereferenced against %cs or %ds as applicable.

The load memory addresses (LMA) that we create within the ELF file represent
the offsets at which we expect each section to appear in the file generated by
"objcopy -O binary".

Looking at the output of "objdump -h bin/ipxe.dsk.tmp" I see e.g.:

objdump -h bin/ipxe.dsk.tmp

bin/ipxe.dsk.tmp: file format elf32-i386-freebsd

Sections:
Idx Name Size VMA LMA File off Algn
  0 .prefix   090d      0154  2**0
  CONTENTS, ALLOC, LOAD, CODE
...
  7 .textdata 000ce040    1370  14c0  2**5
  CONTENTS, ALLOC, LOAD, CODE

which correctly shows that we have (at least) two sections with a VMA of
, but that .prefix should appear at offset and .textdata at
offset 1370 within the "-O binary" output file based on the LMA of each
section.

The binutils objcopy does behave this way: it will use the load memory
addresses as the file offsets for "-O binary" (with the first byte in the
output file corresponding to the lowest load memory address present in the
output).

The binutils objcopy behaviour seems correct to me: since "-O binary" is
intended to create a raw binary image then the LMA (rather than the VMA) is the
relevant value for the offset within this binary image.

Could the elftoolchain objcopy be made to match this behaviour?

Thanks,

Michael

https://bugs.freebsd.org/bugzilla/show_bug.cgi?id=216316

Michael Brown  changed:

   What|Removed |Added

 CC||mc...@ipxe.org

--- Comment #7 from Michael Brown  ---
I have updated the iPXE build process to place the (meaningless) load addresses
for the various NOLOAD sections earlier than the .zinfo section. This change
is in commit https://github.com/ipxe/ipxe/commit/fe52f8e8b and eliminates the
harmless "moving loadable section" warning.

However, there seems to be something else very broken in the elftoolchain
implementation of "objcopy -O binary". Extracting a single section using e.g.

  objcopy -O binary -j .zinfo bin/ipxe.pxe.tmp bin/ipxe.pxe.zinfo

works as expected. Extracting multiple sections using e.g.

  objcopy -O binary -R .zinfo bin/ipxe.pxe.tmp bin/ipxe.pxe.bin

or even just

  objcopy -O binary bin/ipxe.pxe.tmp wtf

produces a binary file with no discernible relation to the input. It looks
vaguely as though objcopy is ignoring the load addresses and just placing the
sections semi-randomly within the output file.

For now, I've modified the iPXE build process to check for the elftoolchain
version of objcopy and refuse to use it
(https://github.com/ipxe/ipxe/commit/1fea8ce06).

It would be good to get a proper fix for this, if anyone has time to dig into
how the elftoolchain objcopy is handling "-O binary".

MFC r364753: Add atomic and bswap functions to libcompiler_rt

There have been several mentions on our mailing lists about missing
atomic functions in our system libraries (e.g. __atomic_load_8 and
friends), and recently I saw __bswapdi2 and __bswapsi2 mentioned too.

To address this, add implementations for the functions from compiler-rt
to the system compiler support libraries, e.g. libcompiler_rt.a and and
libgcc_s.so.

This also needs a small fixup in compiler-rt's atomic.c, to ensure that
32-bit mips can build correctly.

Bump __FreeBSD_version to make it easier for port maintainers to detect
when these functions were added.

Differential Revision: https://reviews.freebsd.org/D26159

MFC r364782:

After r364753, there should be no need to suppress -Watomic-alignment
warnings anymore for compiler-rt's atomic.c. This occurred because the
IS_LOCK_FREE_8 macro was not correctly defined to 0 for mips, and this
caused the compiler to emit a runtime call to __atomic_is_lock_free(),
and that triggers the warning.

MFC r365509:

Follow-up r364753 by enabling compiler-rt's atomic implementation only
for clang, as it uses clang specific builtins, and does not compile
correctly with gcc. Note that gcc packages usually come with their own
libatomic, providing these primitives.

MFC r365588:

Follow-up r364753 by only using arm's stdatomic.c implementation, as it
already covers the functions in compiler-rt's atomic.c, leading to
conflicts when linking.

[Bug 252065] native-xtools-install doesn't install libclang_rt.profile-aarch64.a

--- Comment #1 from Dimitry Andric  ---
lib/Makefile has:

# The libraries under libclang_rt can only be built by clang, and only make
# sense to build when clang is enabled at all. Furthermore, they can only be
# built for certain architectures.
.if ${MK_CLANG} != "no" && ${COMPILER_TYPE} == "clang" && \
(${MACHINE_CPUARCH} == "aarch64" || ${MACHINE_CPUARCH} == "amd64" || \
${MACHINE_CPUARCH} == "arm" || ${MACHINE_CPUARCH} == "i386" || \
${MACHINE_CPUARCH} == "powerpc")
_libclang_rt=   libclang_rt
.endif

while the top-level Makefile.inc1 has:

native-xtools: .PHONY
${_+_}cd ${.CURDIR}; ${NXBTMAKE} _cleanobj
# Build the bootstrap/host/cross tools that produce native binaries
${_+_}cd ${.CURDIR}; ${NXBTMAKE} kernel-toolchain
# Populate includes/libraries sysroot that produce native binaries.
# This is split out from 'toolchain' above mostly so that target LLVM
# libraries have a proper LLVM_DEFAULT_TARGET_TRIPLE without
# polluting the cross-compiler build. The LLVM/GCC libs are skipped
# here to avoid the problem but are kept in 'toolchain' so that
# needed build tools are built.
${_+_}cd ${.CURDIR}; ${NXBTMAKE} _includes MK_CLANG=no
${_+_}cd ${.CURDIR}; ${NXBTMAKE} _libraries MK_CLANG=no
[...]

It looks like the MK_CLANG=no was added on purpose, precisely to avoid
populating the lib/clang/x.y.z directory. I do not fully understand the
reasoning mentioned in the comment about "avoiding the problem".

Bryan added this part in base r325001, so maybe he can shed some light.

--- Comment #11 from Mark Millard  ---
(In reply to Gerald Pfeifer from comment #9)

I'm aware of the tradeoffs with using BOOTSTRAP off.

But my time preferences are such that on small arm boards and the like I
normally use BOOTSTRAP off: BOOTSTRAP makes a big build-time difference
in those contexts. I do sometimes do a BOOTSTRAP based build as a cross
check on the status.
