Fix kernel panic when using CARP with VIMEGE enabled kernel

While initial PR is for FreeBSD 8, the same kernel panic occurs on 9.3-RELEASE.
This bug was fixed for FreeBSD 10
(https://bugs.freebsd.org/bugzilla/show_bug.cgi?id=164696) but still exists in
8.x and 9.x. The patch is for 9.3-RELEASE.

I hope the patch will be merged to the source tree. Thanks.

successful boot.

If FreeBSD boots, it works normally.

Just to confirm the negative: does pinning to CPUs other than 0 result in the
guest crashing ?

If so, would you be able to install the cpuid port (pkg install cpuid) and run
it on all cpus

cpuset -l cpu cpuid

.. and see if there are any differences in what is reported between CPUs, other
than obvious ones such as APIC ID.

later,

Peter.

cpuid difference

Thanks - I think this explains it.

-Vendor ID: GenuineIntel; CPUID level 13
+Vendor ID: GenuineIntel; CPUID level 2

The AP is coming up with a reduced number of CPU leaves compared to the BSP.
FreeBSD (and bhyve) assumes that this is the same in all CPUs. FreeBSD itself
pulls all information about the system from the BSP's leaf contents, and then
assumes this is the same for all other CPUs.

bhyve's assumption is that it can call do_cpuid() on any CPU and get the
same information to pass to guests on CPUID exits.

A lot of applications also assume this and will look at CPUID values to
determine whether they can use SSE/SSE2/AVX libraries etc.

What system is this ? Are there BIOS options to change max leaf values ? Is
it running nested ?

later,

Peter.

[Bug 192281] [kern] nmdm with bhyve causes kernel panic

2014-08-31 Thread bugzilla-noreply
https://bugs.freebsd.org/bugzilla/show_bug.cgi?id=192281

--- Comment #5 from Dave Smith dsm...@johncompanies.com ---

Hi Peter,

I had 3 VMs running with a slightly modified vmrc. The vms had names like
col02325.

When I tried to start a 4th VM it happened to have a name like col00345. I was
using the last 4 digits as the nmdm device number. Apparently a leading zero
for the nmdm number caused a problem. The whole system crashed. I changed the
vm name to col05345, and it worked.

To my way of thinking, nothing that can be entered on a command line should be
able to cause a kernel crash.

Let me know if you need more information. I even have a couple of crash dumps.

Dave Smith

[Bug 192281] [kern] nmdm with bhyve causes kernel panic

2014-09-04 Thread bugzilla-noreply
https://bugs.freebsd.org/bugzilla/show_bug.cgi?id=192281

--- Comment #6 from Peter Grehan gre...@freebsd.org ---
Thanks - yes, easy repro on 10. Doesn't crash on CURRENT, but the bug is
still there in that the leading zeros are stripped when the devfs entry
is created. This in turn means that it isn't possible to connect to the
'B' end using the same text string.

After a chat with Neel, the proposed solution will be to allow any valid
devfs character string between the 'nmdm' and trailing 'A' or 'B'. That way
you can even encode the VM name in the nmdm device name :)

I'll see if I can get this into CURRENT shortly, and then MFC in time for
10.1.

No. Fang Jun has just updated the Bug 196185, -- The hyperv_support.S will not
be used this time, we will delete it.

It turned out it is possible to add the feature without rebuilding the kernel.
So we will not include the feature in the PORTS work.

The code added in apic_vector.s is in align with Xen's implementation. Xen also
has the similar code segment in the same files.

I've seen a similar issue with ZFS zvol's, which was solved by adding a 'dev'
mode that doesn't get picked up by GEOM. Might be worth looking at how it is
done in the freebsd bits for ZFS.

the sysctl is: vfs.zfs.vol.mode
and the ZFS property is volmode

--- Comment #2 from Peter Grehan gre...@freebsd.org ---
At leat in the first example, the amount of memory supplied to grub-bhyve (2G)
is greater than that given to bhyve (1G). Since grub creates the memory map
that is passed to the kernel, this will result in the guest kernel attempting
to access memory that doesn't exist, which results in bhyve dumping core.

The fix is to make sure the same amount of memory is given to both the loader
and bhyve.

That is a different issue and should be fixed by the change in PR 197641 (but
please confirm). That change is in FreeBSD 10.2.

I suspect you are running into another set of issues which have been fixed in
HEAD and stable/10, but did not make it in time for 10.2-RELEASE.

See PR 191564 and related PRs for the details of those issues -- can you please
retest with a stable/10 or HEAD snapshot?

I observe this as well (FreeBSD 10.2), except the freebsd guest does not
allocate all the allowed memory at start; it will grow up to the max memory
then never shrink. Linux VM's shrink to allow better utilization of the host
RAM.

With 10.2 I see the same behaviour as Vick. The FreeBSD no longer allocates up
to the maximum at boot, but it does not release unused memory either.

Would be nice to implement full ballooning in FreeBSD.

Yeah, it does make sense that only one monitor should be running. I went trough
it went I was trying to figure out where the problem was, or at least what it
was causing.

Not that I understand what it does exactly, but I got the idea at least.

For others who may experience the same issue I created a thread on forums and
here I created a PR, maybe it catches somebody's attention.

PCI passthru with bhyve is restricted to devices that support MSI or MSI-X,
which is generally PCI-e devices.

Unfortunately the fxp adapter is parallel PCI and only supports legacy
interrupts.

I'll modify the bhyve wiki page to clarify this restriction.

[Bug 209427] [PATCH] if_vtnet(4) is not sending LINK_(UP|DOWN) events

(In reply to Bryan Venteicher from comment #3)

I'm using it with bhyve.

Looks like it does advertise the VIRTIO_NET_F_STATUS feature:

https://svnweb.freebsd.org/base/head/usr.sbin/bhyve/pci_virtio_net.c?view=markup#l90

However, it looks like it's set to 1 if it successfully opens a tap device and
doesn't change after that:

https://svnweb.freebsd.org/base/head/usr.sbin/bhyve/pci_virtio_net.c?view=markup#l891

(I could be wrong in my interpretation though).

2016-01-28 Thread bugzilla-noreply
https://bugs.freebsd.org/bugzilla/show_bug.cgi?id=206699

--- Comment #1 from Roger Pau Monné ---
I've already told Wei that creating your own bounce buffer is a bad idea.
Instead you should use the BUSDMA API and let it take care of the bouncing when
necessary:

https://reviews.freebsd.org/D1964

IIRC something was missing in BUSDMA so that the HyperV storage driver could
use it, we should look into adding what's needed and then removing this custom
bounce buffering.

Please upload the patch to the review system.

Roger.

[Bug 205549] bhyve pci passthru stops working after guest is restarted

2016-01-22 Thread bugzilla-noreply
https://bugs.freebsd.org/bugzilla/show_bug.cgi?id=205549

Update:

The issue does not appear with MS Windows guest. I can start and halt Windows
2012 R2 many times, and bhyve always pass through that USB controller to the
guest.

The obvious differences in the options with Linux guest are:
Linux: virtio-blk
Windows: ahci-hd
Linux: grub-bhyve
Windows: bhyve_uefi_20151002.fd

It looks like this should be fixed in this MFC:

https://svnweb.freebsd.org/base/stable/10/sys/dev/virtio/balloon/virtio_balloon.c?view=log

Can someone test 10.3 and let us know?

[Bug 208238] [Hyper-V] TSC frequency is not correctly detected: "calcru: runtime went backwards"

2016-04-12 Thread bugzilla-noreply
https://bugs.freebsd.org/bugzilla/show_bug.cgi?id=208238

The tsc-calibration fix was temporarily taken back last Friday because we found
an interesting thing: with some kind of config, Xen can pretend to be Hyper-V
by mimicking the hypervisor CPUID signature (this is usually to make Windows VM
run better on Xen), but Xen doesn’t support Hyper-V timecounter, so the fix
causes an unexpected panic when FreeBSD VM runs on Xen in this case.

We're making another patch to better detect if the underlying hypervisor
supports Hyper-V timecounter or not:

The further patches on 11-CURRENT should fix the bug safely now:
