Apparently the language proper is "Raku" ("camel" in Japanese, like
the old mascot) while the only current major/stable implementation is
Rakudo (Artistic License 2.0, FTW!). The website "perl6.org" just
redirects to "raku.org" (and has the same new mascot, Camelia the
butterfly with the embedded "P6" symbols). It was renamed in October
2019 for ... reasons.

Perl 6 was originally initiated circa 2000, so it's been a long time
coming. Apparently it targets various VMs (including JVM and JS) but
seems to prefer MoarVM. Apparently you can build NQP (Not Quite Perl,
"a lightweight Raku-like environment for virtual machines") with only
Make and Perl 5.8. (No, I doubt it will build with DJGPP, but I
haven't tried.)

Sounds complicated (like almost everything else). Good luck to them.
