Re: [Freedos-user] Broken links on the FD-Update repository
Hi Mateusz :-) I just noticed that for some strange reasons I got banned from the FD user list few weeks ago... Anyway, I'm back now :) No idea... You usually get removed automatically when your email bounces for a while. Or maybe it bounced because some misguided blacklist did not like your IP or your email provider? In any case it is nice that you are back :-)). I got recently a report that links on my FD-Update repository page are broken ( http://mateusz.viste.free.fr/fdupdate/ ). In fact, that URL is destinated to be used by the FreeDOS on-line updater program I wrote, rather than by humans... But indeed, human links on that page are all broken, because my listing generator forgets to add the .zip suffix to them... I will correct that when I will have a free moment. Thanks. Actually it would be very good to have human links, including a link from your FDUPDATE homepage to the FDUPDATE repository, so people can see which updates are available and can download them directly in case their DOS computer has no internet installed. Maybe you can also create a by date and a by name sorted view of the repository page :-). In the meantime, you are still able to download any package listed on http://mateusz.viste.free.fr/fdupdate/ , but you have to add the .zip extension to links manually. Hmm okay ;-) For example, to download the ClamAV version available on my repository, simply use the following address: http://mateusz.viste.free.fr/fdupdate/clamavx.zip By the way, did anybody check whether it still likes the clamav database files of today...? For example for f-prot I have the gut feeling that the old DOS version (while somebody said it does support current database files) is less efficient in hunting viruses because it has an older version of the engine / cannot make full use of the information from the virus database files. Indeed, I got an email from sourceforge, telling me that my email has bounced too many times. That message got trapped by my spam filter, and I actually didn't read it on that time :-) Anyway, I'm hosting my mailbox by myself now, so I will have finally the total control on my mail stuff :-) Thanks. Actually it would be very good to have human links, That's done. I worked on that a bit yesterday. On the same time, I changed the repository URL. It's http://www.viste-family.net/mateusz/fdupdate/ now. The old URL will still serves updates for some time (for people using FDUPDATE), and I will put there a new version of FDUPDATE which will use the new address (that way users will have just to update their FDUPDATE package to use the new repository). As for humans, I just put a redirect on the new site which will lead them automatically to the new one. including a link from your FDUPDATE homepage to the FDUPDATE repository, so people can see which updates are available and can download them directly Good idea. I will put such a link. in case their DOS computer has no internet installed. It happens that in fact nobody uses FDUPDATE... I see that about 99% of user-agents downloading stuff from the repository are Firefox, IE and few Arachne. The other 1% is wget (which is actually used by FDUPDATE). Maybe you can also create a by date and a by name sorted view of the repository page :-). Will think of that. I'm not a html wizard, therefore I don't promise anything. By the way, did anybody check whether it still likes the clamav database files of today...? I'm not sure that using the latest database is a good idea... Antiviruses have the bad habit to remove some oldish signatures from their bases, therefore it could happen that the latest-greatest Clam database doesn't detect some DOS viruses (to which FreeDOS is exposed), while older versions of the database does... Just a quick thought.
