Re: [Freedos-user] Retire from sending monthly reminder message

2022-09-27 Thread Jim Hall
Hi everyone

Based on the comments from this thread, we won't have any monthly
reminder messages anymore.

We will always have the list rules linked on the website (see
https://www.freedos.org/forums/). I will also add a version of the
"reminder" message to the automated emails for anyone who joins the
email lists.

Hi!
No, but someone might forget.
Every 3 or 6 month, at the 1st day or the 1st weekend?!

Re: [Freedos-user] Retire from sending monthly reminder message

2022-08-23 Thread Alvah Whealton
When I first joined mailing lists of any kind, back in the mid 1990's,
monthly reminders of etiquette almost seemed too infrequent. Flame wars
broke out constantly. Flame wars are still a constant on social media. My
hope is that places like Twitter and Facebook provide a sufficient outlet
for people to get the venom out of their system, making them more agreeable
when they turn to their mailing lists. Although I've seen things get
touchy a couple of times on the FreeDOS list, things seemed to get worked
out quickly and without any need for intervention. I have tended to be
pleased with how hospitable the FreeDOS list has been and how incredibly
patient the most experienced people have been in their explanations and
discussions. Eric, Liam, Jim and Dennis come to mind, but I hope the
inadequacy of my memory isn't taken as a slight to anyone else.

I would vote "no" for monthly reminders.

I vote no. Having a one-time email sent by default when folks join seems a good
idea, but a monthly reminder? Overkill in my opinion.

But I think we're pretty unique these days in having a monthly

Also, our current FreeDOS email lists are hosted on Sourceforge now,
and the Sourceforge list service lets the list administrator add a

copy the text of our list rules into that welcome message, so that

With these changes, do we need a monthly list reminder anymore?

Nice script John.

If Jim wants, I can run this on my softcon.com server, it won't be any
trouble, and I just tested it by sending it to myself. it works just fine.

Haven't tried it as a cron job yet, but I suspect that will work just
fine too.

Simple yet powerful piece of work there, nice work.

[Freedos-user] Retire from sending monthly reminder message

2022-08-21 Thread John Price
It's been fun participaing in the FreeDOS development, but I think
it's time for me to retire from the mailing lists, and also sending
the monthly reminder emails.

Attached is the script I use to send the reminder, run by a cron job
on my Linux server. The error message (only sent if it can't download
the reminder message) is in the same vain as my main website's error
message at https://gcfl.net/missing.html (but much shorter). I thought
it was funny at the time. Use it, or don't.

I suggest that whomever wants to take this over coordinate with Jim
Hall first. Last thing he (or anyone really) wants is 15-20 reminder
emails a month, right?

It's been fun! Remember, Don't Panic!

So long, and thanks for all the fish!
