Re: G4 MDD woes

2010-05-28 Thread eastofevelix
Seems the CUDA and PMU switch are one and the same.

I've tried the DIMMs one at a time, in each different slot and
combination - they all check out but anything in slot 4 provokes a
complete freeze. I've also done a sustem software 'archive and
install' - no effect. I found a G4 'Apple Hardware Test' CD and tried
that - it won't even run - boots into open firmware with the error
message:
Invalid memory access at %SRR0: 0661054c %SRR1: 0003030

Unless someone has a better idea, it seems I've acquired a
paperweight.

I think you're giving up too easily.

I've seen a similar message to yours on my G5 before. My G5 is fine, I
just had some RAM seated poorly. I reseated my RAM and everything was
fine.

It seems your problem is a RAM issue. It appears slot 4 is bad. Are
you sure you've got the correct RAM? It takes PC2700 DDR. You can use
PC3200 DDR also, but NOT PC2100 DDR.

As for the AHT, are you sure you have the right version? I believe the
correct version is 693-3994-A which should be printed on the disc. All
versions are available for download here:

http://www.info.apple.com/support/aht.html

Also, on the resetting the PMU/CUDA, Apple has this article:
http://support.apple.com/kb/ht1939

I've found the removing the PRAM battery and letting it sit overnight
(or 15-20 minutes) without the battery can sometimes help. I normally
press the CUDA immediately after removing the PRAM battery, and again
before reinserting the PRAM battery. If the PRAM battery is dead, this
can cause all sorts of strange problems, so being certain the PRAM
battery is good is really important.

I'd recommend reseating EVERYTHING (video card, ATA cables, etc.), and
then burning a new copy of AHT. Then use a single stick of RAM that is
KNOWN GOOD PC2700 DDR or PC3200 DDR, in the 1st RAM slot, and try
booting the AHT disc using the Option key at startup. I think there's
a good chance you can get this working perhaps?

This machine is very easy to work on. a motherboard can be had cheap and
relacement isn't too hard. If you've eliminated all the other possiblities,
Have you claened all the power cable connections? Otherwise if a bad ram slot
is the culprit then I'd be getting a motherborad.

Yes, The Encore/ZIF is the correct upgrade. The G4 is slightly
faster than the G3 on some things. However, 10.3 and up makes use of
the G4's Altivec for the desktop from what I understand.

Good luck.

The OP needs to make sure he runs the 3rd party patch to allow the G4
to work in the G3 tho. Almost forgot that.

G4 MDD Dual 1.42 upgrade

2010-05-28 Thread JOHN CARMONNE

Hi All

I have a G4 MDD Dual 1.25. I would like to know if I can put a Dual
1.42 processor in it. And if so will it still boot OS 9? If not has
anyone used the Sonnet Dual 1.8?

I'm assuming if the logic board is fw400 only, it should boot OS9 even
if the processors are upgraded? waiting for others to chime in. Jeff

It appears by some pictures to be the same physical form. But they
were in the FW800 machines so I wonder if it would fit?? My MDD is a
FW400.Originaly a Dual 1.0 and I upgraded it to a Dual 1.25

I have to be able to boot OS 9.

QuickTime web download issue-what happened?

2010-05-28 Thread DLC
Greetings all,
Hope this is the right place to ask this. Once upon a time (NOT too
long ago!), I was able to download any QT-based movie snip (news items
or instructional videos for software, for ex.) on Safari by simply
waiting for the page to load, then right-clicking the panel and a
save to desktop choice was made available. Not so anymore; the
latest update combo of Safari and QuickTime Pro (in Leopard 10.5.8,
btw) has severed that option. Now when i right-click I get an Open in
Dashboard selection - *big whoop* (still doesn't allow an actual save
of the movie).
Can anyone offer an explanation, and maybe, a plug-in that restores
this very helpful save file option?
Many thanks,
Dana
