Those ATA cards all model the attached devices as if they were SCSI.

In most cases, at least in the cases where the controlling firmware was
licensed from Firmkek, the actual originator of ATA add-on cards for Macs,
the attached devices are bootable, just as SCSI drives are fully bootable.

It could be that Sonnet wrote their own firmware, possibly to save the
license fees from Firmtek, and equally possibly they took some shortcuts.

Whatever the real reason, the Firmtek-licensed cards are bootable, and so
also are the ACARD cards, which use their own firmware, but which is
 architecturally compatible with Firmtek's.

Indeed, Firmtek made some boo-boos in its SCSI implementation, which ACARD
duplicated in order to be compatible. You can initialize a drive on an
ACARD card and subsequently transport it to a Firmtek-licensed card and it
 will be plug-and-play.

Needless to say, I don't buy Sonnet's products because they tend to cut
corners and produce products with incompatibilities or other obvious
 limitations.

Many non-Mac drive controller cards can be used on a Mac but you can't boot
from them. This is because the ROM on the board (if any) doesn't have code for
a Mac. To be bootable the card needs a Mac compatible ROM.

This is true, but . . . if any competent programmer would look into
the source code for XPostFacto, the key innovation of XPostFacto was
the ability to start the boot process on one bootable hardware
device, and load some of the extensions that will enable another
unbootable hardware device, and then hand-off the boot to this other
normally unbootable device. In XPostFacto this is called the Helper
Disk boot option, and it's extremely useful for making normally
unbootable PCI cards such as PCI Firewire cards or PCI ATA cards
bootable. This means that theoretically ANY unbootable card or device
could be made bootable by a simple little program that does what
XPostFacto does. I wish someone would get the XPostFacto source and
write a new little universal application called something like Boot
Helper that would do just this, and make all these cheap but
unbootable PC-version cards bootable in all Macs.

I've been booting from these cards with no problem. Just specify
startup disk in Preferences or startup with option key held down. I've
never had problems with these cards - they are completely transparent.
My choice of Sonnet brand has nothing to do with research into
technical matters such as firmware. They were offered by a supplier I
have been using for years - macsales.com (Otherworld Computing) - and
I knew I would be able to return them if I had any problems. I've had
two in operation on two G4s for at least 3 years.

Suggested upgrades for a Power Mac G4 PCI Graphics

2010-12-29 Thread Alex Smith (K4RNT)
I just received a Yikes! G4 Mac, with 768MB RAM and a 433MHz
processor. I would like some feedback on some recommended upgrades. I
am planning on converting this system into a Linux server of some
kind, preferably Yellow Dog Linux, and I've been browsing OWC and the
only processor upgrade is a 1GHz G3 PowerLogix upgrade. Is there
anything out there that's cheaper and would give me a similar boost in
speed?

Or would I be better off in just buying a Quicksilver? :P

Thanks in advance!

I'm not a Yikes expert, but my understanding is that a Yikes is almost
identical to a late BW G3, and when you upgrade the CPU to 1 GHz
you're required to underclock the system bus from 100MHz back to
66MHz, so the net gain isn't as great as it might appear. I believe
the CPU:bus ratio is limited to 6:1 maximum when running at 100MHz, so
this means the max. full speed CPU would be a 600MHz G4. I think when
underclocked to 66MHz you can get a 10x ratio, so perhaps a 1.2GHz G4
would be possible if they made one, but I don't think they ever made
such I thing? The Yikes isn't the best Mac for upgrading, but all PPC
PowerMacs are looking pretty slow and expensive in relation to cheap
PC hackintoshes running Snow Leopard.

My Logitech has a nice eject button in the upper right corner. But
like all the other special buttons, it only works when LCC is running.

You could just drag the disc to the trash.

Or do a 'diskutil eject' command from Terminal.

Or boot and hold down the mouse button...

The answer is to use the proper command

diskutil eject devicename

The command

There is no 'eject' command in the shell. There is, however, one in

The easiest way is to put the Eject icon in your menubar, then you
can easily control the open/close/eject functions. Navigate to System
Library CoreServices Menu Extras, double-click on the icon
called Eject.menu; you will see an eject icon appear in your menubar.

If yoi can find a used Sonnet 500 mHz for under $25 it might be
worthwhile. I know it doesn't sound like much of a spped bump but you
get a larger cache with the Sonnet hence better performance. Also, max

I believe that on a non-Apple keyboard, holding down the F12 key will eject the
CD. Don't just press it-you need to hold it down for a few seconds. I don't
think F12 works that way on Apple keyboards.

On keyboards without a dedicated eject key F12 does. In 10.4 or later you have
to hold the key down for a couple seconds, otherwise you simply activate
Dashboard.

Spiliing coke: rinse in water (yes, detach keyboard !) and for the

Rebooten: PRAM-reset
CD uitwerpen: restart mac and keep mouse button pressed .

Coke, immediately rinse with lukewarm water. Current needs to be
switched off, so with a USB keyboard untie cable, and with a wireless
keyboard take out the batteries. And don't wait too long before doing
so.

Dry the keyboard, and leave it for 2 days in a warm spot. 2 weeks is

only processor upgrade is a 1GHz G3 PowerLogix upgrade. Is there
anything out there that's cheaper and would give me a similar boost in
 speed?

Or would I be better off in just buying a Quicksilver? :P

 Thanks in advance!

If your needs are modest, a Yikes! will do as a file server. However,
a Yikes in general does not make a good file server. There are several
reasons for this. Firstly, I believe the maximum hard drive that can
be installed without add-ons is 120GB PATA drive. Second problem is
that the IDE bus on the Yikes maxes out at 33MB/s, which can be slow
for a modern hard drive. Your upgrade options are also limited. A PATA
bus by itself is an issue; the PATA drives still available tend to be
small and expensive. The fastest G4 upgrade I've seen for this model
is 500Mhz, though there may well be others available. As you've noted,
there is a 1GHz G3 available, which may be fine for a file server. The
controller configuration is also not ideal for RAID. If I had to
convert this to a file server, I'd put in a SATA hardware RAID card,
assuming I could find a Linux driver to support it.

I think anything you spend on this machine would automatically be more
than its worth. A Quicksilver 2002 would be a far superior investment,
since it supports large PATA drives out of the box.

QS 2002s are great machines.

Also QS 2001s and DAs.

For some of the later G4s it is NOT required to install an ATA card in
order to access large drives.

Simply install the LBA48 property using Open Firmware.

I ran my DAs for years and years that way and not even once did the
persistent LBA48 property require resetting.

I used that property on both the HD bus and the optical bus, as my optical
bus (slave) was usually employed to initialize new drives or to test old
drives.

If considering a SATA card, which is probably a good idea as PATA maxes
out at 750 GB, then try and find an Initio-based card. Those are bootable.

The good part is that it's a diet drink - no sugar.

It sounds extreme, but a very effective way to clear keyboard spills
is to put the kb upside down on the upper rack of the dishwasher and
run it through a cycle.
Dry it out thoroughly, as others have advised, and it's perfectly fine.
