Tina hit the nail on the head, the fact it affects to different Macs,
one PPC and one Intel, running two versions of OS X, 10.4.11 & 10.6.8,
would seem to indicate this issue is a hardware issue related either
to the enclosure bridge or the HD. Since the enclosure is both
Firewire 800 & USB 2.0, have you tried it with USB 2.0? I'd try USB
2.0, and if it works, just use USB 2.0 rather than Firewire 800. There
is almost zero speed difference because the bottleneck on a single HD
is the HD itself, not the type of connection, they're all faster than
the HD.

You can check for error messages related to Firewire using
Utilities>Console and searching through the messages for anything
related to the Firewire bus or this HD.

Often there have been firmware updates for enclosures that work
poorly, but your enclosure appears to use an Oxford 943 chipset
(OXUF943SE) which doesn't appear to have any firmware updates that
might fix your issue.

I think switching to USB 2.0 is your best bet. If USB 2.0 doesn't work
in a similar fashion, it's FOR CERTAIN the HD. You might be able to
backup the data and reformat the HD completely, or use DiskWarrior to
fix, but most likely it overheated in the small, fanless enclosure,
which is common, and the HD would likely be dead for all practical
purposes. S.M.A.R.T. data doesn't work for HD's in external
enclosures, BUT, if you can place the HD into a regular desktop or
laptop attached to the internal bus you can use a utility that can
access the S.M.A.R.T. data which should be able to tell you if the HD
overheated or has other fatal defects.

So if I just delete my own personal stuff, it will be ok to leave the

Roughly in the center bottom of the logic board are several groups of caps
(1000uF, 16V IIRC), about 10-12 caps in a group. I think there are about 4
groups.

I replaced the power supply. I started out replacing the caps but ran into a
snag but I don't remember what it was.

The power supply is trickier as the caps are stuffed in tighter and glued
together. And they are often surrounded by other components that you don't
want to remove.

Firewire HD Partition is not accessible. Very strange.

Hello everyone! Long time reader very seldom poster...

I have a question for the minds here:

and all of the icons on the desktop as well as the finder bar up top all

Please help shed some light on this unusual problem. I have not been
able to find anything via Googl/Apple site/etc. I'm fairly certain my

lost a recording session among other important things...Thanks in advance.

Follow Tina's instructions and you should not have any problems.
Another easy solution is to remove the hard drive and keep it for
yourself and sell the system without any hard drive. This is done
often by many sellers.

As far as I know, they can be wiped or they can carry what original came on it
or they can be updated to what OS they can carry at the moment. Check list
rules as to what is acceptable, say if you were on LEM-swap. Other than that,
wiping is merely an option for security, so do what thou wilt...

Tah

Ps... Try putting your drive in another system and wiping then reinstalling it
physically in the machine you want clean. Automatic wiped system!

I can't understand your concern. Am I missing something?

Number of download seems increasing to me.
Considering only the "RC/final" 4 versions (G3, G4x2, G5):
TFF 4.0.1 = 19904
TFF 7.0 = 20703
TFF 8.0 = 22334

I didn't consider TFF 9, because it's still "work in progress".
DL numbers seem going up, though.

Do you mean erasing the whole drive, or just the user's data?
In other words: do you want an empty drive, or a working Mac (booting and
with apps) but without any of your data left?

Which Operating System(s) those Macs have?

Sure you can do it yourself.
In case you want to erase just your data, you'll have to identify where that
data has been put (not so difficult).

Re: How do I remove an OS from a computer?

2012-01-02 Thread faithie999
i assume that "wipe the data" means wipe the entire disk. if you want
to just erase selected files, move them to the trash, then click on
Finder-->Preferences-->Advanced, and check the box next to Securely
Empty Trash. then empty the trash. i have no idea how secure this
is.

to securely erase the entire disk:

boot from your install disk

open disk utility

highlight the hard disk in the left-hand panel

click the "erase" tab on the right-hand panel

click on "security options" and check the radio button next to the
desired level of secure erase of your choosing, then click erase

the above is all for OS X. for mac classic os, someone else will have
to give advice.

How old, what OS?

There are some utilities that will zero out a hard-drive. I presume you're
interested in removing any old personal data.

I have an old utility called "Burn 2.3" (Classic Mac) that allegedly can
zero out selected files, so this wouldn't require a boot disk. There are
others that need a boot disk.

If the hard-drives are quite obsolete, and you're just interested in making
sure your data is wiped before disposing of your legacy macs, you can always
open them up. You'll get some amazing refrigerator magnets. The nice shiny
disks ought to be good for something decorative...

look doable.

none of the caps, either on the logic board or the power supply, are

I have/had the exact one too. But I upgraded the processor. The 733 MHz model
lacks level 2 cache, which makes it really slow compared to the 733 MHz
version of the G4 Digital Audio.

I’d recommend getting a used processor module (+ heatsink) of the Dual-800 MHz
or even the Dual-1 GHz version. Alternatively a third party upgrade will help
a lot.

Even on 10.4 the QS-733 felt significantly slower than the MDD-Dual-1-GHz.

> I'm writing this because a friend said i was "crazy" just beacuse i
> use such an old mac for the "everyday use".

I’m a crazy person when it comes to answering your question: am I still using
an old G4?

Well, I've got a lot of G4s, two G5s and one G3. And what do I use mostly?
The G3!

I got the slowest and oldest of them all running Tiger, Microsoft Office (which
just rocks compared to LibreOffice; I don’t know much about iWork) and
TenFourFox for the internet. I don’t actually use YouTube on it thou. Wouldn’t
work anyway.

I also occasionally use a G4 Cube which I plan to upgrade: a GeForce 6200
graphics card maybe, but I’d loose compatibility for the older Mac OSes. I’ll
definitely upgrade the single 450 MHz processor in favour of a Dual-500 MHz
module that I already have tested in one of my G4 towers.

What else… I now used one of the G5s a lot. I found that YouTube works great
using TenFourFox and WebM/html5. It’s got some issues with the fans thou.

Crazy? Just a matter of perspective. If you can still do with it what you want
to do with it, why on earth should that be crazy?

I ran Linux on my G4 MDD Dual-1 GHz at first. It was great, but I eventually
went for a newer G5 to replace it, which ended in a desaster—just two words:
hardware support.

> So does anyone here is still using his old trusty G4?

I think the replies to your post answer it well. There are still people out
there that keep their Power Macs running.

I don’t want to fall into a negative mood here, but still I find it importaint
to point out an observation of mine that made me think that, sadly, these
times are going to end soon: look at the download figures of TenFourFox. This
will give you a good idea of how many of “us” are still out there…
http://code.google.com/p/tenfourfox/downloads/list – “Downloadcount”

Prior to that I ran a Quicksilver with maxxed out RAM and OS X 10.4.11
I upgraded due to a need for more RAM and the ability to add more HDs
The quicker speed was also a factor

Prior to that was a B&W GW (a Smurf)

I routinely use a MDD G4 with dual CPUs. I do CAD work and software
development on it for embedded systems. It's not my main machine, that's a
MacBook Pro. Many days I use the G4 more than the MBP. I don't watch streaming
video on it but I do watch mp4 video files on it. And when I've compiled the
code I'm working on I use a G3 Pismo to download it to the MicroController I'm
working on.

Besides CAD and editing / compiling I use the usual web browsing, database,
word processing, spreadsheet, etc. applications on it.

My household fileserver is a G4 QuickSilver with a SATA card and about 2Tb of
storage.

Yes, G4s are still quite viable. As to being crazy, I can't say but there is
nothing wrong with using a G4 for daily use.

Your "bad" english is better than quite a few so called native speakers I've

Partitioning has always been (and still is, I see) a matter of personal
taste.
Like everything in life, there's no "One size fits all". :-)

On my HD, I still have three main partitions (plus one for scratch disk).
Since I'm keen on organization, it helps keeping things separated.
Some advantages:
- Faster file searchs
- Faster backups (I can backup just one partition)
- It's simpler to remember the file/folder trees (I always know a certain
kind of files can only be in that partition)
- I can keep differents OS9 System folders for Classic and for OS9 boot
- If there's some disk problem on some partition, it's faster running a disk
repair tool on that partition alone (this was more true in OS9 times).

I totally agree with you, it doesn't offer any protection from data loss,
though.

I received a 20" G5 (no iSight) for free because it had the same or similar
symptoms. I replaced all the power supply caps on the logic board and replaced
the power supply. All is well with it now.

Replacing the caps isn't simple as they use lead free solder which has a higher
melting point. Unless you are skilled at soldering your best bet is to find a
service to change them.

Your English is great!

Everyday use is exactly what older computers are great for. Email,
Internet surfing, word processing, most YouTube (with the right
tricks), there is nothing they won't do.

The kind of people who say that is usually the kind of people who
won't watch a Fellini movie because it's "old"...

Ciao,

Felix

On OS X... CarbonCopyCloner rulz.

Time Machine is cute, and good for automatic mostly-pain-free hourly

+1 for "CCC rulz." Very reliable backup, I no longer worry about if my
drive's gonna fail because I know CCC's got me covered.

Crazy? You'd be crazy only if it didn't do what you needed and made
you miserable. (Which certainly makes the case for most windows users,
but I digress.)

I still have my MDD G4s and they're very useful. They still rip DVDs,
browse the web, transcode video to work on my TiVo, and run iTunes to
load my iPod.
As long as it works, be happy.

By the way, have a plan for when it fails. At some point, the power
supply will die and you'll want to transfer files to a new machine. I
have 5 G4s in the house, 2 have died so far.

I had dual 1000 Mhz G4. Installed Mac OS Server 10.5. Good backup server
for my other macs with its SATA card and SATA discs. Sometimes i even use
it for DVD Burning, iMovie simple movies and surfing. Even i watch some
online TV on it. Other than its wind sound it is good to work with.

Your English is very good! If it works for you, tell them to blow off. ;^)

G4 MDD Dual 1.0GHz (10.4.11) here is barely adequate, have to continually
change my YouTube resolution to 360, but it works fine for Word and most other
things. I plan on upgrading, but only because I feel its limitations. If you
don't, ignore those 'other' folks. ;^)

Carbon Copy Cloner is my personal favorite, lots of folks recommend Super
Duper; but CCC is free (with ads, or no ads with a small donation) flexible,
and produces a bootable backup if you so desire.

I actually use both time Machine and CCC, on different disks, because while
both offer easy restores, Time Machine has the edge for ad-hock file and folder
restores because you can actually go back past the last backup, which allows
you to roll back significant changes to files.

As for partitioning, I haven't seen the value of that in a long, long time.
Partitioning gets you all the hassles of separate volumes with all the risks of
a single mechanism. If something goes wrong with your disk, you lose it all
anyway. Separate spindles, always!
