Re: re-flashing video cards for use in Mac computers

Sounds like a crazy idea, I know. But if a person doesn't have a Windows PC with an AGP slot any longer, and doesn't have a PCI video card that works on a Mac, what are the other options available? I have a 128mb VRAM Windows version of the ATI Radeon 8500, that I want to use in my dual 1.25GHz G4 PowerMac MDD, which I have upgraded to stock Apple dual 1.42GHz G4 CPU module. David It was fairly common among the old flashing brigade - much less common now due to the death of the original pci and agp - and is usually achieved by running Panther through chicken of the vnc - or any vnc controller. Panther because it will boot with a non mac card installed. The flashing software is Graphiccelerator but be aware that it will flash all the ATI cards installed - both pci and agp - a cautionary note if you do have an ATI pci card to boot and flash the ATI agp. There never was a 128MB ATI 8500 for the mac so no standard rom - just the 64MB version - so you may end up with half the vram. Also the 128MB version for the pc was known as the 8500LE and as far as I can remember a cut down version with vga and a strange dvi port that has no vga and will not take an adapter. These CDs, which contain PDFs of the records in question, all opened with no problems. You may be able to close these disks on your wife's computer. Also ask the folks producing these disks to make them in the 'Master' format or 'Close them' (I think that's the option.) Closing is sometimes called Finalizing. When one writes multiple sessions to media, the disk may not be readable using software other than the original writing software until the disk has been closed or finalized. After closing, no additional material can be written to the disk. So software which supports multiple session writing won't close the disk until you tell it to, so that the disk is still capable of taking additional data. If the person burning the disks never bothers to do that final step, then the disk won't be readable by software which only supports the standards. Re: Buying a G5
I agree, limiting memory capacity to 1GB on Macmini G4 is very much crippling the system, however if you like to do simple tasks under Tiger, and browse the internet it is more than capable. People tend to linstall Leopard and I think that should even lower available memory. I got mine with wireless card and bluetooth. I also have a superdrive which is having problems, it will only reads Apple CD/DVDs and nothing else! I upgraded the firmware but no luck. Any ideas? - Sorry for changing the subject here. I personally like to use abandon ware from Classic Mac, and because I am also conscious of the fact that certain PowerMacs can waste lot of electric power (400-550Watt) I love the Mac mini G4. Under Tiger I can run lots of free abandon ware from Macintosh Garden, and it consumes only up to 85W! You can install Leopard if you like, and having a firewire you can use lots of external HDs in a chain if you choose to. Although you only have two USB ports, you can pair it with wireless keyboard and mouse and still have two unused USB ports. External HD / Firewire problem with Mac G4 Cube
I was working on my relatively unused external HD connected via Firewire on my Mac G4 Cube under System 9.2 and I am sure that I disconnected the drive too soon. Since then the drive is no longer recognized, it asks me if I want to Format it or Eject it. I check the drive under Mac OS X 10.3 and I can see it using the Disk Utility but it does not allow me under First Aid to verify disk of even repair Disk. The Drive sound ok, I have the feeling that the directory got 'broken' . Any ideas on how to fix it? Thanks. -- You received this message because you are a member of G-Group, a group for those using G3, G4, and G5 desktop Macs - with a particular focus on Power Macs.
