Re: Re: 2004/week 10 dual G5 with one cpu dead

2013-06-22 Thread Adam Vaughn
The only dual core G5 CPUs were used in the very last series of Power Mac G5, offered in single processor 2 and 2.3GHz, as well as the dual processor quad 2.5GHz. The mid 2004 PowerMac G5s used dual single core processors, offered as dual 1.8, dual 2.0, and dual 2.5GHz (a single processor 1.8GHz model was offered starting later that year). I've heard of dual processor PMG5s running on only one processor before. I believe your earlier 2004 PowerMac G5 has one dual-core CPU rather than two single-core CPUs.

Re: MDD G4 and GeForce 6200 - compatible?

Hello everyone. I recently picked up a Dual 1.0GHz MDD G4, which is
currently equipped with a (stock?) Radeon 9000 card. Since it's
equipped with Leopard, I'd like to upgrade the video card. I have a
 933MHz QS2002 which I've upgraded with a flashed GeForce 6200 card.
Some sources I've checked say that the 6200 doesn't work at all with
an MDD G4, while others say that it does, if the proper pin
connections are cut (which it appears is the case, since the card
works just fine in my QS2002). Which one is correct? If not, why
wouldn't the 6200 work in my MDD? And finally, would it hurt to try
the 6200 in the MDD anyway? As usual, thanks in advance.

According to Mactracker, these were the stock video cards for the
 MDDs:
NVIDIA GeForce4 MX, GeForce4 Ti, or ATI Radeon 9000 Pro

Don't know a lot about flashed cards, but they are sometimes the ones
you have to tape out certain connectors to get them to work. I'd be
careful about just trying it, without a guru's blessing ...

 Bill Connelly

 Hi Adam and Bill,
 I have a flashed GeForce 6200 (256Mb model) in my QuickSilver 2002
 and an
identical unit in my 1.6GHz G5. The QS one is indeed taped at the
 proper
contacts. The tape came off of the second one, making it
 incompatible with a
4x AGP, but worked fine for the 8x G5. Nice cards for a reasonable
 rate.
 Best regards,
 Dana

Thanks for the info so far. My main concern in all of this is hoping
that either video card or computer wouldn't be fried if I were to
install the 6200 in the MDD. The 6200 was purchased on eBay from
mac_geniuses, who sold it as modified for use in Macs; it works
perfectly in the QS2002 when running OS X, but the resolution for OS 9
must be set from OS X (a rather finicky process). All the eBay ads
I've seen for Mac-type 6200s state explicitly that they work in
neither MDD or FW800 G4s; however, LowEndMac states that they will
work with all AGP Macs once modified; otherwise, it won't boot. Quite
confusing, really...
