My apologies for inadvertent swap posts

2009-03-12 Thread BillBoggs

Hello List,
I just wanted to apologize for accidentally posting two WTB messages
a little while ago. I just forgot there were two lists. Sorry. My
error has been duly pointed out and it won't happen again.

Dead PowerMac G4 Digital Audio Model

2009-02-26 Thread BillBoggs

Worked flawlessly for many years. Now, without any warning, it just
stopped. Won't power up at all, no sign of life whatsoever. Any
suggestions where to start?
Thanks!
Bill

Wonky PowerMac G5 Single Processor Freeze-Ups Resolution

2008-12-11 Thread BillBoggs

First, thanks to several of you for your input and at least
commisseration with my suddenly unreliable five-year old first
generation PowerMac running Leopard (random freeze ups, very difficult
blue-screen freezes during reboot, that sort of thing). I tried every
one of your suggestions I could possible do. Those included running
hardware tests on the memory, hard drives, and logic board and doing
an archive and install of the Leopard OS. After all hardware
checking out fine, I went ahead and replaced the main hard drive with
a fresh new one, using Carbon Copy Cloner to create the new drive
contents. It took just three reboots to return to freezing and tough
restarts. My problem was back and I was beginning to think it was the
dreaded logic board failure, causing my first dead Mac after owning
more than ten different models since the 512K Fat Mac.. I then tried
one last suggestion, that Leopard was basically incompatible with my
PowerMac G5 1.6 single processor hardware for some reason. I went back
to Tiger and now after nearly a week working hard to make it freeze
up, nary a hiccup (or hiccough if you prefer). I think we've solved
the problem.

Re: PowerMac G5 1.6 Single Processor wonky issues

2008-12-06 Thread BillBoggs

Bruce,
I took your advice with an additional bit of info from a link to an
Apple document about blue screen freezes and OS 10.5. I'm pleased to
say things seem fine now. All the hardware checked out fine (woo-hoo!)
and a fresh Archive and Install version of the OS seemed to have
removed the freezing tendencies. Thanks for your help.

Boot from your 10.5 didsk and run Disk Utility Repair until it says
 everything's been fixed.

While in Disk Utility check the SMART status of your drive. If it says
Failed, BACK UP YOUR STUFF  and replace the drive,it's on the way out.

If the SMART status is OK and Disk Utility cannot fix the problems,
Disk Warrior may be able to fix things. Otherwise, back up your stuff,
if needed, and nukepave the drive: reformat, re-install 10.5, and all
 updates and restore your stuff.
