Just add another drive!  Use the original drive for the operating
system, applications, and your basic user files.  Use the new drive
for your other / big stuff - movies, music, etc.  Much more efficient
to throw data around from two drives than to bottleneck it on one!

How do I go about saving thew OS that is currently on it?

Make a backup using an app such as Carbon Copy Cloner (free).

Can I put it on a thumbdrive?

Yes, if it's big enough.  Make sure you re-initialize it as HFS+
Journaled, case insensative, first tho, so you don't corrupt the
Mac's file system when you make the backup.  Most such devices are
 FAT (PC) formatted originally.

 Will it boot from it?

Um I think Sawtooth can boot from a USB device.  So then it
probably would boot from a flash drive.  Bruce?  Someone? yes?

Your user directory, which is generally by far the largest directory

The only straight drop ins from Apple that will increase your speed
are a single 500 from a Sawtooth or duals from the Gig ethernet
series. In order to use them the duals, you need to have a Uni-N
revision of 7 or higher. Here is a link to a download to test.

 http://newertech.com/tech_support/uni-north.php

As to non Apple drop ins, most G4 accelerators will work. Most are
either autosensing or have dip switches to work with the motherboard
speed. The pins are the same from Sawtooth through Quicksilver, and
most manufacturers built their upgrades to fit all of those.

You can probably pick up a 900-1Ghz processor on the swap list for
 around $100.

There are numerous DP upgrades for that one, both third party made for
it, and ones that shipped from Apple (although those were only ever
dual 500's iirc), whether they're cost-effective is an entirely
 different subject.

Is the installation of DP even warranted or should I just
  install a faster single processor?

A single 1Ghz upgrade for that is cheap, and quite effective. I have
the GigEthernet Mac (same as Sawtooth but faster ethernet and another
few minor diffs) with a OWC 1Gig upgrade in mine and it's still quite
serviceable. A faster video card than the stock is almost as good an
upgrade, though. I have a ATI Radeon 9000 in mine (iirc...their low
end upgrade) and it's helped as well.

Are there many programs that take
  advantage of duals?

Depending on the OS version, a lot. OS X itself makes good use of DP
 architectures.

That said, any program that crunches that hard probably is better
served by saving your money for a newer, faster Mac.

Re: G4 Dual Processors - interchangeable with singles?

2008-11-02 Thread Jasiu

As I understand it, not every program takes advantage of the dual
processors. How do you know which programs utilize dual processors.
If none of the programs you use can utilize dual processors is there
any advantage to having dual processors?

How much interchangeability is there between the AGP, Gigabit, and

  (QS = Quicksilver?)

Someone local is selling a non-working QS with dual 800 MHz. So that
CPU card wouldn't work in an AGP or Gigabit G4, but might work in a
  DA?

100 MHz bus processors work in 100 MHz bus machines, if the sockets
 match.

133 MHz bus processors work in 133 MHz bus machines, if the QS
(Quicksilver) power cable adapter is made for the DA (Digital Audio).

100 and 133 MHz bus processors cannot be interchanged under any
circumstances (excepting certain Giga Designs and OWC, and possibly a
few others, which are specifically designed to work on either bus
 speed and slot location).

For Apple processors, the connector is the same, but 100 MHz bus
processors are laid out for 4 RAM slot machines, whereas 133 MHz bus
processors are laid out for 3 RAM slot machines.

A dual 450 or 500 may be installed in a single 450 or 500, provided
the LSI is up to the required level (7, I think).

There is good interchangeability between processors on non-Gigabit
and Gigabit (the raw motherboard are actually quite similar).

On any processor swap, the complete processor/heatsink/fan should be
 interchanged.
