You can Install Mac OS 10.3.9, your iMac can´t run 10.4 beacause it
doesn´t have FireWire, you can easily upgrade the HD and the RAM, if
you put a HD with over 128 GB of size, will not work.
With 96MB of RAm you can run 10.2 jaguar but it will be very slow.
With XPostFacto you can install 10.4.
An HD greater than 128 Gb WILL work but you can only format it up to
128Gb unless you use either the firmware patch or the driver software.
This is important as these days it's getting harder to find plain old
IDE harddrives so something like a 160 Gb drive may be an option.
