Classic was discontinued with 10.5. 10.4.11 is the last version of OS X to
support Classic.

Yes, it runs just fine in 10.4.11 without Classic. It will *not* run on
10.5.8, however. It will also run on OS 9, though I usually prefer 5.5
there.

I prefer Photoshop 7.0.1 to any of the later CS releases because it is the
last Photoshop that doesn't require Adobe's ridiculous activation scheme.

AFAIK, some apps that are able to run both under Classic (OS9) and OSX,
allow to declare which one you prefer.
Maybe the PS7 that Les is trying to use, is set to run under Classic.

Get Info (File menu in Finder) on the PS7 icon, you should see in the middle
of the Info window an option like "Open in Classic environment": make sure
it's off, and try again.

An OS9 installation would be wy smaller than any OSX.

Besides, running an OS9 (Classic) app in "real" OS9 is usually faster than
running it inside Classic (Classic is an emulation, albeit a very good one,
and any emulation introduce slowdown).

Photoshop 7.0 runs great under OS X 4.11 without Classic. I've run it in a
number of G4's from a Sawtooth to an MDD and it is still in use in two G4
towers. Never even tried to run it in Classic. No experience with 10.5 but
suspect it should work. Did not know about the 7.01 update but will check it
out, thanks Kris --glen

I'm no Photoshop expert, but I thought that Photoshop 7.0 and the
update 7.01 were "carbon" apps that ran in both Mac OS and also OS X
natively. I don't think you need the Classic environment to run
Photoshop 7.01 in OS X, is should launch within OS X natively I think?

Also, there's a special plugin for the G5 that allows the G5 to fully
use it's power with Photoshop 7.01:

<http://www.adobe.com/support/downloads/detail.jsp?ftpID=2132>

I had a friend using Photoshop under OS X 10.5.8 on a 1.67GHz G4
AluBook, and he downgraded to 10.4.11 to get better response and speed
out of Photoshop, it was a significant speed-up, perhaps 30% using
10.4.11 instead of 10.5.8, so that's one reason you might still
consider downgrading, but I'm pretty certain Photoshop 7.01 should run
without MacOS or Classic needed.

Classic Environment

2012-09-30 Thread Les

Hi all,
I wish to run Photoshop version 7 on my G4 Powerbook 17" running Os X
10.5.8, however Pshop will not install as the Classic Environment is
not present. My G5/1.8 dual proc is running OS x 10.4.11 and I have
no problem with PS 7. I understand this is to do with OS X 10.5 no
supporting Classic. I have my old OS9 and OS X 10.4 install discs but
not OS X 10.5. This is my plan: Clone the Powerbook via CCC to an
external drive, re-format and partition it, install OS9 or OS X 10.4
on one partition and OS X 10.5.8 from the clone on the other. Is this
feasible/prudent? Also, since the Powerbook HD is quite small, would
OS9 be a wiser choice than Tiger? My install discs for OS9 and Tiger
are retail versions from my desktop towers, will this be a factor?
Many thanks for insight.

Cheers, Les
