Hello Len,
Thanks for the good (and thorough) lesson. So, a laser printer that
stipulates capability of HQ1200, but does not mention Postscript, may yet be
Postscript capable? (the printer in question is a Brother HL-2140, printer
of choice for the former owner of the print server I bought); since I
mentioned it, both my downstairs Macs (a DA G4 running 10.4.11, and a G5
running 10.5.5) can easily see the print server (via Bonjour and IP
address), but cannot negotiate the printer, my suspicion being that it is
not Postscript capable. That's the only drivers that Print Utility offers
when configuring the printer that resides at that IP address, and I
discovered a very-modestly stated aside from D-Link re: its Mac
compatibility to that effect (Print Server in question = DP 311U). I am
trying to verify if the Brother HL-2140 is Postscript capable to assist me
in confirming that this is my problem - no PS capable printer.

Many thanks,
Dana

2 completely separate issues. To simplify things:

Printer resolution is how many dots per inch it puts on the paper.
This ranges from 72 dpi for an old dot matrix printer like the
ImageWriter up to 4800 and up on an imagesetter for press work.

Postscript is the computer language it uses to determine where to put
those dots. HP's PCL (Page Control Language) is the other main
language used.

Postscript is also (relatively) device independent. A file output as
postscript will print at the maximum resolution of the printer doing
the output, taking full advantage of the output quality available.

HP's PCL is more device dependent. Output a file for a 600dpi
LaserJet and if you send that file to a printer that has 1200 dpi
capability, it will still only print at 600 dpi quality.

If you are asking this for help in choosing a printer, I would try
and go for one that has postscript capability. The next OS upgrade
may break the non postscript driver and the manufacturer may not
want to bother writing a new one.

However, assuming you can see it on the network, you can still print
from OS 10.5 to a LaserWriter IIg from 1991 by using Postscript Level 2.

HTH,
Len

Greetings all,
Someone refresh my memory please:
Is the printer resolution "HQ 1200" comparable to Postscript 2
emulation?

Thanks in advance,
Dana
