Re: Freeware Memory Tester?

2010-08-29 Thread Eric Volker
Just wanted to pass on thanks to Jim and John for the suggestion of memtest.
I ran it for one pass that took nearly an hour to complete. The new RAM
passed with flying colors, and I haven't had any problems with the G5 since
the new memory was installed.

I downloaded memtest before I realized that Ubuntu PPC had a RAM tester on
the CD. I have a copy floating around somewhere, and could've used that
instead. I should've known since all copies of Ubuntu x86 ship with a memory
testers included...

Thanks again...

I dunno if it works on PPC, but Intel Ubuntu CDs come with MemTest86+. The 86
seems to imply that it's x86, but it may have been ported, as it's open source.
I warn you, though: it takes a F*ding* LONG time.

Find and download the free utility Applejack in the version that supports your
OS. Make sure when you install Applejack that you click on the option box to
install Memtest. Once installed, reboot, holding down the Command and S keys to
enter single user mode. Then read carefully and enter the command to enter
Memtest. IIRC, you have to type X and then hit Enter.

Memtest is probably the best RAM tester out there. You might want to start the
test late in the evening and let it run all night to do a thorough job.
