Re: Freeware Memory Tester?
Just wanted to pass on thanks to Jim and John for the suggestion of memtest. I ran it for one pass that took nearly an hour to complete. The new RAM passed with flying colors, and I haven't had any problems with the G5 since the new memory was installed. I downloaded memtest before I realized that Ubuntu PPC had a RAM tester on the CD. I have a copy floating around somewhere, and could've used that instead. I should've known since all copies of Ubuntu x86 ship with a memory testers included... Thanks again... I just added 2x256 DDR400 sticks of RAM to my G5 from my scrap heap, and want to make sure the sticks are actually good. The G5 boots, but that's not a guarantee of stability. The machine is a dual G5 Powermac, if that makes a difference. I do not have a copy of the Apple Hardware Test.. I dunno if it works on PPC, but Intel Ubuntu CDs come with MemTest86+. The 86 seems to imply that it's x86, but it may have been ported, as it's open source. I warn you, though: it takes a F*ding* LONG time. -- You received this message because you are a member of G-Group, a group for those using G3, G4, and G5 desktop Macs - with a particular focus on Power Macs. Make sure when you install Applejack that you click on the option box to install Memtest. Once installed, reboot, holding down the Command and S keys to enter single user mode. Then read carefully and enter the command to enter Memtest. IIRC, you have to type X and then hit Enter. Memtest is probably the best RAM tester out there. You might want to start the test late in the evening and let it run all night to do a thorough job. -- Jim Scott -- You received this message because you are a member of G-Group, a group for those using G3, G4, and G5 desktop Macs - with a particular focus on Power Macs.
