If you're using 10.4 or 10.5 the Apple Airport Setup software that  
comes with your system will not control the older Snow or Graphite  
Airports, and the older stuff may not install, however there's a  
simple Java app that works just fine:

(The first time you run the software it looks like it's broken, drag  
the window sizer to show all the controls.)

Then it was 10.5 that did it. I couldn't remember; all I remembered is

You need the Airport software on your Mac. Not sure about
the Snow but my old Graphite requires you to connect via
wire for the initial setup. After that, you can administer
the Airport via wireless.
