Re: Install script for fresh OS install?

2010-08-03 Thread Richard Gerome

Hey this links are pretty cool!!! I wish I knew that when I was redoing
those computers... I always used the user name as Apple Computer and set up
the password as whatever OS I used like: jaguar or tiger so I could download
all the updates and software without any trouble, then the user could just go
in and change the password if they wanted... Thanks for that info!!! Cool!!!

That will happen on its own, with a new install. I just did some drive
swaps, and wanted to made a new one the main OS drive, so I started
from scratch. Big welcome screen and all.

 Hi Joe,
Thanks for the response. Yes, I know that, a fresh install provides the
 welcome procedure.
I just wanted the new user to experience the same thing after I had finished
 with the updates. Maybe not..?
 Thanks again,
 Dana

After the fresh install just power off the machine with the power button and it
will boot to the welcome screen. You will then need to do the updades. Or give
them the update combo on a DVD or a USB stick.

It's admirable when people solve their own problems, but this is a solution
in search of a problem in my opinion.

I'd ask the new ~user what short name they wanted for their Home folder,
assuming they'd want their real name as the long name, and leave the password
blank by hitting the Return key in the password field, and then tell the new
~user to boot the install DVD and use the Change Password from the menu bar.

For a little eye-candy and a song, you're creating make-work for the new
~user, and perhaps more work for yourself if they need guidance for the
setup. I'd bet the average new ~user ends up with a short name Home folder
with the silly default firstlast name because they won't realize that
there's no relationship between the long name short name and that both can
be anything they wish rather than the suggested default names.

I'd like to find a simple application that would change a short name and then
self destruct. The methods of changing them are a little PITA but doable, I
like to have a generic system that I can CCC to a machine and the personalize.

Thanks, Kris - point taken. Normally I find out what the new user wants and
leave it at that, however this time I was running the risk of not being
able to interface with the owner, and wanted to give them this option after
I had installed all updates and additional software. Fortunately, the owner
chimed in, and all's well. Still, a pretty nifty AppleScript for future use.

Dana
