Re: RJ 45 Aggravation Update

I do, I think part of my problem is I only work on this stuff every
several years or so.

Thanks

May I ask if you have a pair of RJ-45 crimpers?
They usually include a place to cut the cable prior to laying the
wires into the RJ-45 connector.

I plugged the line into the TIVO and the pilot light on the adapter

Beats me.

How many of the pairs does RJ 45 use?

Anyway, the installation looks neat. The other main line I use works
with all four pairs like its supposed to.

Crimper voodoo. *shudder* Glad you got it workin!

Really, you shouldn't have to remove any of the insulation. The
point of the crimper is to make the little spikes dig thru the
insulation into the wire, to make a good connection. Alignment is,
of course, critical. It also helps to hold your tongue just right
and mutter an incantation as you squeeze.

100Base uses four wires, as two twisted pairs. The twists and the
other wires provide shielding.

1000Base uses all of 'em.

There should be some good wikipedia articles on ethernet over twisted
pair that describes this stuff.

I think he's talking about the external sheathing.

It worked because it is probably just using pairs 12, and 36. It
sounds like bad or cheap plugs. We had a problem like that at a school
in central Texas. It sometimes took 4 or 5 times to terminate a cable
correctly because the plugs were faulty. The outer sheath of the cable
should be about 1/2 inch back from the end of the wires. The outer
sheath has to go up into the plug and be crimped inside it for stress
relief. The cable's, not yours. Peace, Dennis
