Thanks for this useful hint.
What I got in System Profiler is this:
Product ID:0x1001
Vendor ID:0x047e

Looking up an USB database (http://www.linux-usb.org/usb-ids.html), this is
what I found:
047e Agere Systems, Inc. (Lucent)
1001 USS720 Parallel Port

So, it seems my USB-Parallel cable is somehow recognized by the Mac.
Now I don't know what to look for...
I googled usb parallel Agere Systems macintosh, but I couldn't find
anything related (mostly is Linux stuff).

Any idea?

You might try LSI, who owns Agere now:

I don't find the USS720 thing listed there, but they might call it something
else...

You might want to check that the parallel port on the printer is
enabled. If it was last used in another environment then it might not
be open.

My experience was with USB-to-Parallel cables that use the Prolific
PL-2305 chipset. Parallel is known as IEEE 1284 so sometime Googling
IEEE1284 helps.

The PL-2305 is really common, and is recognized in newer OS X without
a driver, and has a driver for older OS X, so it works with all OS X
AFAIK.

This webpage has a link to the PL-2305 OS X driver and also a link to
USBTB which I use on my Macs and this link says enables most USB-to-
Parallel cables in OS X natively:
http://macosx.com/forums/hardware-peripherals/50457-prolific-pl-2305-usb-parallel-converter.html

As a really long shot you might download the PL-2305 driver for OS X,
and navigate into the Contentsinfo.plist of the installed kext and
add your ID #'s for your Agere Systems chipset (sometimes these ID #'s
are binary, sometimes decimal, so pay attention), and perhaps you'll
get lucky and the Prolific driver may load and work for your Agere
cable, but I wouldn't hold out too much hope. Better to install USBTB
and check to make sure your printer is setup for using the Parallel
port.

Of course the G5 has no LocalTalk port, so I thought of using an

 Any idea?
Any program or driver I can try?

If all else fails, PowerPrint supports Macs, and I am sure would have a 360
