Re: Upgrade my Quicksilver

2011-11-21 Thread JoeTaxpayer
Is the QS 933 a dual? Mind my asking how much it went for?
I've seen the MDD G4 (w/2GB RAM) shipped for under $150 now. Curious
about the tradeoff between price and need for upgrades.
Some G5s are sporting enough memory that the price of the memory alone
is worth more than the whole G5. Just my observation.

Re: Upgrade my Quicksilver

2011-11-21 Thread PeteMo
Ditto the sentiment that the QS range only went up to a Dual Proc
1.0GHz G4. Having said that I'm getting a QS 933 MHz and an AGP 500
MHz via eBay in a few days and intend to upgrade as much as I can.

As per other commenters, the very first thing you should consider is
maxing out the RAM. PC133 SDRAM sticks can be obtained from OWC and
others at a very reasonable price. I can verify this from experience
with the macs I've owned that this makes a difference.

A processor upgrade makes a noticeable difference in performance and
speed, as I upgraded my DA 533 to single G4 1.4GHz with great results.
BUT, and it can be a big but, you have too weigh up the merits of
buying a processor upgrade that will most likely cost more than the G4
itself. I note that OWC currently do PowerLogix Single and Dual 1.6GHz
Processor Daughterboard upgrade.

The PCI SATA card is a good way to go as it bypasses that ATA66 and
128GB hard drive limitations, but again they can be expensive.

Although upgrading the RAM, Processor and installing a SATA card and
SATA hard drive can be expensive, it will be a fraction the cost of a
new or recent mac. imho the G4 is worth every upgrade option, but your
macage may vary.

How much do you use and love using your G4 PowerMac will determine
what you do next.

All the best with your upgrading.

Happy Macing
Pete

Correction to my last post the Radeon was 9600 not 9800

For comparison’s sake: and a note on how much faster 10.4 is compared to
10.5 on these machines:

™QuicksilverG4" PowerMac G4
(QuickSilver)my
best Xbench Score 70.68 for 10.4
and
™QuickSilverDuetCaviar2" PowerMac G4
(QuickSilver)my best
XBench Score for 10.5

I've found xBench to be great for testing out upgrade variations and
comparing with the results of other peoples mods.

Re: Upgrade my Quicksilver

2011-11-21 Thread Tim Martin
I have two QS G4 machines formerly 733 and 800MHz they are both maxed out
at 1.5Gb Ram. The 733 got the 800Mz CPU and runs 10.4 happily and uses a
500Gb IDE HD using the HiCap driver. I made the mistake of buying a four
port Sata card that doesn't allow booting from a uk Sonnet dealer (who
wouldn't exchange) This is my five year old's machine. (Before you ask
KidPix, You Tube, Spotify, Lego 3D Constructor, SketchUp, Sesame Street, Dr
Seuss etc). On the Machine (formerly known as 800 MHz) I had more luck and
fitted the Sonnet 2 port sata card that boots nicely and now has a 1Tb
Hitachi deskstar and a 2Tb WD Caviar Green attached. I also installed the
Sonnet Duet 1.8 Ghz which has been running flawlessly ever since - fast but
expensive - I think this machine is one of fastest that you could run
System 9 native on - only a similarly upgraded MDD (9 bootable version)
would beat it. These superfast Sonnet Duet's for AGP/QS and the ones for
the MDD are discontinued and seem to be rare as hens teeth now. In the QS
DUET I also put the unique FW800 USB2 PCI Combo card from NitroAV. I know -
these upgrades didn't make sense economically but I was having fun as both
machines were gutted free throw-outs. Oh yes and I put in a Radeon Mac Pro
9800 video card with dual DMI ports for Cinema HD monitors I know some say
they need modding to work in the QS PCI slot but mine worked just fine out
of the box! This is still my main machine. Intel only compatibilty may make
me get a Mac Mini at some point but otherwise I'm still happy - I had a
period when I started getting a lot of kernel crashes unexpectedly - my
original apple CPU fan had seized so replaced that and added a PCI slot fan
extractor alongside the video card and things are cool again now.

Have fun.

If you end up putting in a SATA card, you won't have to worry about the
128GB limit, at least with the drives connected to that card.

Max the ram out to 1.5GB.
Put in a SATA card.
If you have the stock video card, it's most likely good enough for anything
but gaming.
As far as an optical drive upgrade, you can put pretty much anything in
there that is IDE.

As far as a processor upgrade goes, if possible, put a Dual 1GHZ processor
in. Only if you can find a reasonable price though, otherwise it may not be
worth it. Anything that Sonnet sells, like the 1.8GHZ Dual, would be best,
but usually the price for that processor alone is higher than the price of
a high end G5 PowerMac.

At around 200$ new (I think), it wouldn't be very much dollar-wise, but I

IMHO, you won't see much of an improvement, because of the inner limitation
of the PCI bus.
Perhaps a modern and big IDE drive would give you the same speed
