Open up the users and make a new user for them to use. Go to sharing and
turn desktop sharing on. Open a terminal window and type ifconfig
Your ip address will periodically change so you'll need to get a dyn dns
program to notify the other person when it does.

Sorry that will only show your internal ip address. You'll want to use
google type what is my ip address. That will give your external. Then
you'll want to port forward on your router so the machine will be accessible
from the net.

Look into LogMeIn http://www.logmein.com

They can run apps and open files for free. They will print on YOUR printer
and the only way to file share is by email. Logmein does have a pay version
that removes those limitations.

access. You mean to run apps on your computer or just to get/put files?

If the former, then you have screen sharing built-in.

If the latter, then you can use file sharing. And as Bruce points
out, a service like DynDNS will provide you with a fixed name so
people don't have to know your IP address.

A MUCH easier solution for sharing files is to use shared Dropbox
folders. It totally eliminates the need to play around with Apple's
file sharing, DynDNS, etc.

(My Dropbox plug from a recent thread).
Dropbox is a great app! Wonderful as a cloud backup/sync solution,
and great for sharing files with friends. Works on Tiger thru Lion,
iOS, Windows, etc. Me and mine use it every day! It's even replaced
sneakernet here at home (mac vs pc issues)!

I strongly recommend using the latest release candidate of the 1.2.x
line. The full release should be shortly... A beta of the 1.3 line
has been started, but it's so new the bits are still damp.

(shameless plug, my referral link)

And the latest release candidate is available here:

There are a lot of ways to accomplish this. First we need to know what you
are running though. OS, hardware and the like.

Well it's not dead simple, mainly because you need to get a static or at least
knowable IP address, for which I'd use DynDNS' free service:
http://dyn.com/dns/dyndns-free/

Then turn on file sharing and give them your user name and password.

Of course this means they can literally take anything, delete everything and
completely mess up the system whether they meant to or not.

Not entirely sure if this is really what you want.

can the OP set permissions so that only his public folder has any 'world'
access?

'chmod' comes vaguely to mind

having said that, if the OP has an iDisk, dropbox or similar online storage,
could the relevant files be copied in such a location? Then others could do
whatever they like to these copies without risking the originals on the OP's
mac, without risking the innards of the OP's mac and without the OP's mac even
needing to be switched on!

Clicking on the link I gave lead me directly to their free service. It's a
little deceptive (in that they REALLY want to sell you their Pro service, and
make it look like you have to get it), but you can still get the free service,
you just have to 'purchase' it by adding the no-cost item to your cart.
