Re: Reformatting a Maxtor 160 gig disk

2012-02-11 Thread Cameron Kaiser
There is something about my system that is not seeing these bigger
 hard drives beyond 128 gigs.

The Sonnet ATA 133 card is different than the one that blew up in the
power surge. This card is brown and my original old card was green. I
don't know what that means, except that the green card could see the
 bigger drives.

The green card is probably the later release that can do LBA, which is
required for hard drives larger than (you guessed it) 128GB. I don't know
if this can be fixed on the older card. My suggestion is to find a new one.

Reformatting a Maxtor 160 gig disk

2012-02-02 Thread smac0031
Something strange is going on here.

Ever since my power surge disaster last year I have had trouble with
my 300gig HD. The circuit board was fried on it and I bought a
replacement and have been using it. I saved all the data on it to a Go
drive and I know I should replace the drive but I have been using it
anyway.

I thought there was something wrong with the drive because every time
I have used Disk Utility or Drive Genius on it chokes with some really
screwy out of range error and says repair failed. I just thought there
was something wrong due to the controller board on the HD which was a
Seagate.

I decided to stop messing around with this drive and copy all the data
to a 160 Maxtor. I formatted this drive on a normal ATA 100 bus in my
DA G4 so only 128 gigs shows up, but I figured I would put this drive
on Sonnet Tempo 133 card and format it to whatever 160 gigs of HD will
turn out.

The problem is that the drive shows up as a Maxtor 128gigs. There is
no extra unformatted space. I'm thinking the problem is the Sonnet
Tempo 133 card. I don't know what the deal is with it. In about this
Mac this PCI card comes up as pci1033,e0 in slot 4 which I am guessing
is either my USB 2.0 card and slot 5 is PCD20269 then is says ata.
This is confusing me.

There is something about my system that is not seeing these bigger
hard drives beyond 128 gigs.

The Sonnet ATA 133 card is different than the one that blew up in the
power surge. This card is brown and my original old card was green. I
don't know what that means, except that the green card could see the
bigger drives.

I don't know what to do.
