SIIG Ultra ATA-133 Failure

2011-03-14 Thread smac0031
I discovered why my SIIG Ultra ATA-133 card quit working.

I picked up the computer it was formerly in to move it and head
something rolling around. At first I thought it was a loose screw.

I found a little cylinder rolling around. It was about a half inch
long and a quarter inch in diameter. I think it is a capacitor. At
first I thought something had fallen off this computer but I looked at
the SIIG card and there is a void where this thing plugs into.

I am not sure how it is supposed to be aligned. It has a stripe down
one side and all the other capacitors are facing the same way.

I am wondering if it is worth trying to solder this back on. I don't
know if my opinion of this card is improved now that I know that
something has fallen off of it and that is the most likely reason it
doesn't work and it's not really a piece of crap.

I was lucky and found a local man who solders things onto mobo's, and
he fixed such a problem on my QS 2002 Dual 1GHz mobo. I had knocked
off a similar structure near a PCI slot when trying to install a PCI
card.

If you could find a picture of the card, and a pro mobo solder-man/
woman, I'm sure it would be satisfying.

This has the instructions you'll need. It's an article about replacing bad caps
on logic boards, but the soldering and placement info should get you where you
want to be. It's worth a try, anyway...

http://www.ehow.com/how_4914815_replace-motherboard-capacitors.html

Here's how to id the positive and negative leads:

http://www.wjoe.com/capacitorinfo.htm

There should be markings on the board where the cap was soldered in.

Now, if the cap was broken off, then it's likely you;ll have to replace it,
rather than re-solder it. Take the cap you found to a decent electroncs supply
store (or go online to http://www.mouser.com ) to get a replacement.
