Re: Webcam for Mac
Ok, today I got the Logitech C210 webcam. It's small and cute, it's USB cord is a little short (1,5 m / 5 feet), but above all it just works. Video and audio are recognized in QuickTime Player, Skype and Audacity (audio only). Quality is better than the Trust Cuby. At 19 euro, I'm a happy camper. :-) -- You received this message because you are a member of G-Group, a group for those using G3, G4, and G5 desktop Macs - with a particular focus on Power Macs. Re: Webcam for Mac
First, thank you all for your suggestions. Today I bought a Trust Cuby for 13 Euro. I got it because it was the only webcam with audio cable (3,5 mm jack) for the microphone connection; all other webcams had USB connection only (thus, for both video and audio). I chose this solution because I wanted the microphone connected all the time, even when the (video) cam was off. Alas, while the video was ok, I got no sound at all from the webcam's microphone; so it appears the line input in my G5 is faulty. When connected to a Windows PC, the webcam worked fine with both video and audio, so the problem is definitely with my G5. Hence, it seems I have to go the all-USB connection route. Tomorrow I'll get the Logitech C210. Il giorno 8-02-2012 18:57, Bruce Johnson ha scritto: ANY UVC-compliant web cam will work out of the box. Is this true for their audio, too? As for audio quality, if it's that important, I'd invest in a decent mike anyway. I wasn't looking for hi-fi audio. I just meant I value audio over video, for my purpose. I'd like having just one (more) object on my (already crowded) desk for both, so a mic-equipped webcam is the best for me. From the reviews, the Logitech C210 should have pretty good audio. So I don't think that model is easy to find here. From what I understood, all the plug and play webcams (i.e., no drivers) are UVC devices and should work with a Mac; of course, without drivers it's likely their special features would not work. -- You received this message because you are a member of G-Group, a group for those using G3, G4, and G5 desktop Macs - with a particular focus on Power Macs. I believe all the PPC Macs used the Plaintalk microphone which isn't the same as a normal mic. You can create a universal adapter from a Plaintalk mic so that normal mics will work. http://www.xlr8yourmac.com/audio/plaintalk_mic_conversion/plaintalk_mic_conversion.html http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=15884 -- You received this message because you are a member of G-Group, a group for those using G3, G4, and G5 desktop Macs - with a particular focus on Power Macs. CORRECTION: The G5 does NOT use a Plaintalk mic, it does NOT have a mic port at all, it's a line-in port that requires an amplified sound source. It's possible to build an adapter to provide amplification for a normal mic, but it's normally easier to get a cheap USB adapter. I got one free with a headset that was about $7 shipped on eBay. Otherwise you'll need a self powered microphone, see: http://support.apple.com/kb/ht2839 -- You received this message because you are a member of G-Group, a group for those using G3, G4, and G5 desktop Macs - with a particular focus on Power Macs. Ok, so the port is working, it's the mic that cannot send a powerful enough signal. Actually I managed to use an audio mic (for singing), but the signal was really weak. I thought it was the faulty port, but know I understand it's the wrong kind of mic. Why oh why Apple messes up these simple things...?!? :-/ (the mic works in a cheap PC, but not in a G5? C'mon!) I have a Creative Live! Vista IM Camera from my pc days that works fine with my Powermac G4, tested in skype and works fine. For Mic it uses a generic 3.5mm jack micro. -- You received this message because you are a member of G-Group, a group for those using G3, G4, and G5 desktop Macs - with a particular focus on Power Macs. Webcam for Mac
Hi people! I'm looking for a cheap Webcam (with built-in microphone) to use with my PowerMac G5 DP 2.7, with OSX 10.4.11. From what I got reading around, webcams with dedicated Mac drivers are expensive. OTOH, any UVC webcam (USB video device class) should work with any Mac with OSX 10.4.9 or later. AFAIK the Logitech C210 and Microsoft Lifecam VX-800 should be both UVC, and the reviews say their quality is good - I'm not picky about video quality, but I'd rather have a good audio. But I'm not 100% sure they will work in a Mac (I could return them in case they don't, but I'd rather have some info beforehand). I know about Macam http://webcam-osx.sourceforge.net/index.html but its webcam list doesn't include any webcam I found in the shops around. Had any of you success in using a cheap (I mean 10-25$) PC webcam on your Mac? Any recommendations? Thanks in advance, Valter -- You received this message because you are a member of G-Group, a group for those using G3, G4, and G5 desktop Macs - with a particular focus on Power Macs. Re: Webcam for Mac
I'm sure you'll get a bunch of responses with this one but first search and download 'Macams' as it will allow you to run a multitude of different USB powered webcams. Second I would like to recommend a webcam by Rocketfish, model number RF-HDWEB. I prefer this one because it is capable of taking 8MP stills, has great higher resolution video quility that can be compressed rather easily, and has a built-in mic with superb pick-up and gain. With a quick Google search you can find it for around $20 used or a little over $40 new. -- You received this message because you are a member of G-Group, a group for those using G3, G4, and G5 desktop Macs - with a particular focus on Power Macs. Re: Webcam for Mac
Can anyone tell me how the performance of a typical webcam is on a 1.67GHz G4 PowerBook? I gave my 2.66GHz Core2Duo MacBook to my Son when he started college and moved backward to all of my G4 G5 Mac's, so I don't currently have any computers with a built-in webcams (not that I used the one in my MacBook before I gave it to my Son, but I would like to start using one now that my Grandson has started emailing me from his old Windows laptop. I need to check to see if his Hand-Me-Down Windows laptop is capable of using a webcam so he can video chat with me too.
