I don't know about cap reliability; I don't think that's ever been assessed
for the G5 series systematically. However, the quad G5 has the later Panasonic
LCS and seems to have a more robust power supply. See

http://www.macintouch.com/reliability/pmg5.html

On that same table, the original dual 2.3 (the fastest air-cooled G5) has
extremely good marks relative to the rest of the line. The worst G5s for
reliability were the early ones, and these are the least desirable anyway,
because they were not significantly faster than the MDDs they replaced.
However, the dual 2.5 (which uses the Delphi LCS) also has some alarmingly
high failure numbers in certain categories.

For my money, the quad is the only G5 worth getting because it has good grunt
and reasonably good longevity (mine has been running great with only minimal
maintenance since I bought it in 2006), but it can be noisier, definitely
runs hotter, and uses a lot of power relative to the others. The original dual
2.3 (not the later PCIe) is a close second because it has less to go wrong
and is not such a power pig.

Hi Cameron,

What constitutes 'more reliable'? Less problems with caps on the logic
board or more reliable when performing at its peak? Just curious,
wanting to upgrade to a G5 myself.

Greetings,

Eelco.

Actually, the dual 2.3 is the fastest air-cooled unit.

Personally, if I were buying a G5, I'd only buy the dual 2.3 or the quad 2.5.
The quad 2.5 is the only liquid-cooled G5 worth screwing around with (because
of its processing speed and cache) and tends to be more reliable than the
other Power Mac G5s.

I had a late model dual 2.0 PCIx G5 for a while, it was great for
graphics with an upgraded video card and had loads of processor power.
It was the fastest one without water cooling, so I would look for one of
those.

The PM G5 Dual 2.3 would be your best choice if you want to stay away from the
LCS's, I have have a Dual 2.7 that I upgraded to a Panasonic dual pump LCS that
has been leak proof,:-)
