Re: digital audio processor upgrade

Absolutely. However, I wouldn't get one off of eBay.

I just recently bought one from OWC. It is a 1.6Ghz. It required an
installation program which ran off a CD which required booting off the
CD, pressing the programmer switch and then booting up and running a
program which modified the boot rom, It modifies the rom so you can
boot into OS X, then you run another routine so you can run System 9
under OS X and another routine so you can boot into System 9. There
maybe a couple of other routines to run, I'd have to dig out the
manual to see.

This runs fine now. If you were to buy a processor off of eBay you
probably could just plug it in, but I don't know for sure. A processor
off of eBay would be cheap and wouldn't give you much of a speed
boost.

Personally, my rule of thumb on upgrading processors is to go 4X
faster or get a new computer. This thing cost me about $240 and if you
need to you can talk to OWC tech support.

Hello Jonas,
Others with more experience than I will most likely chime in, but I know
this: you're simplest no fuss CPU swap is to look for a Dig. Audio 733 MHz
unit, the highest and latest offered for that particular model. It is really
a very nice CPU, having a built-in Level 3 cache as part of the CPU's design
(this actually makes it an even better CPU than the 733 MHz QuickSilver,
which came later, and did away with the L3 cache). AFAIK, all Dig. Audio
CPUs are interchangeable, and (perhaps) even use the same heat sink and
shroud/fan.
With a little hacking, you can even use QuickSilver CPUs in a Dig. Audio
(netting you say, an 800+ MHz CPU), but these do require physical
modification to be able to get them onto the motherboard - the socket,
however, is the same.
HTH,
Dana

I put a QS 933 MHz in a DA and it's now running Leopard nicely.
Investigate carefully before you buy, many 933's for sale at auction
are overclocked 733's with no L3 cache. You'll pay a little more for a
QS 933 with an L3 cache but I think it's worth it. The wiring
modification needed to make a QS processor work in a DA is very easy
to do.

Re: digital audio processor upgrade

2009-06-21 Thread Matthew Burks

This is exactly what I'm wanting to do. Does anyone have a dual 1ghz
chip (w/ the complete set) for sell. I'd love to bump my DA's speed
with this kind of upgrade.

Thanks,
Matt

 Dual 1.0 Ghz.

Be sure and get the complete kit, though, as that processor is for a
Quicksilver 2002, and to install in a Digital Audio you will also
need the matching heatsink and the fan unit from a Quicksilver.

Also, you will need a simple power cable as the Quicksilver powers
the processor differently than a Digital Audio.

This example shows a modified Digital Audio fan unit, but a
Quicksilver fan unit is the preferred way to go.

The Dual 800 MHz from a Quicksilver 2001 will also work, but the Dual
1.0 GHz is really the best upgrade.
