blu-ray drive in and speakers for XServe G5

2011-01-28 Thread Bruce Ryan

Hi folks

At the moment, I use an XServe G5 (2·0 GHz, 2GB RAM) running Leopard
client (not Leopard Server) as my main computer. It looks like I'll be
using it for a while to come. Can anyone recommend speakers and a blu-
ray player - or doesn't the G5 have enough poke for such shiny
additions?

Many thanks

Bruce

OS X doesn't support Blu-ray.

Any speakers should work.

Your G5 is more than ample speed-wise for
blu-ray. Blu-Ray is just a big DVD, really.
Video data on it is usually either MPEG-2 or
MPEG-4 (h.264). No big deal.

Apple does not directly support Blu-Ray. But 3rd
party software support is available, and
companies like OWC (macsales) offer the drives,
both internal and external.

Speakers are so subjective. IMO it's best to
go to computer stores and take a listen to what
they have.

If yer going to be doing any video editing, you
might want to consider adding some memory.

Hi Dan,

I am currently looking for a second hand / refurbished mac. Near to
where I live is one the biggest Mac Centre stores in the region (on
the Northolland peninsula). I am looking for an iMac G5 in their
bargain basement during the January clearance sale. Or would it be
better to go for an XServe?

I need a model that can support an external Blu-Ray drive or any
other external peripherals yet to come. Currently I'm doing a
photography and image processing course where I often use an iMac G5.
It's sleek and fast but I don't know if it can handle all the
external gizmos.

Let's see if I can clarify,

14x55 trailer 2 bedrooms, one in the rear (master) then the other
(office) right next to the front room (with a wall separating the two.
my G5 is on my desk up against this wall... The G5 has one 1/8
stereo output (Line-out), It also has 2 dvi video outputs... ... I
need one monitor at my desk, and one monitor in the living room
(that's easy enough) but then it gets interesting... I have two
powered speakers and powered sub in the office that I have currently
wired with 1/8 stereo male to 2 1/8 stereo female... THEN, 1/8 stereo
to speakers and 1/8 stereo to sub (with a mono adapter)

Now, the hard part, how to get (share?) the audio through the wall to
the front room set of speakers and sub? I only need office OR front
room at one time as I'm going to use the monitor/speakers in the
living room for a make shift media viewer with front row. Does that
make sense?

I think it would be a bit easier without all the powered speakers and
a regular amplifier, but I don't have the room for the amplifier or
the money to get one really Hmmm I think what I need is some kind
of speaker switch box? Jeff

Barring audiophile quality needed, any old pair of 'computer speakers'
will do.

Places like 'Big Lots' usually have a selection to choose from;
Computer Geeks has 'em from $4.99 up http://www.geeks.com/products.asp?cat=SPK
, Buy.com has 'em too http://tinyurl.com/qscv29 including this
tasteful pair http://tinyurl.com/poygmk for $12 :-)

WalMart, Target, Best Buy etc etc will all carry some.

If you want 5.1 or 'audiophile' quality, stick to a known brand name,
like Bose or the like.

I have to partially disagree here. In my youth (early 80's), when I
had hair and good hearing, I could tell the difference between $200
pr KMart specials, $500pr Klipschs, $900pr Polks (top of the line,
which I bought) and, the Quad ESL63s ($5,000 pr, iirc).

Shuold have gone for the $1200.00 Klipsch Horn instead. Sorry, but I
had to stick up for my home state. Women who can eat corn on the cob
through a picket fence, and Bill Clinton, are not the only things to
come out of Hope, AR. As for that $500.00 wooden volume knob, sounds
like it's time to fire up the Skil saw!. I'll bet I can knock those out
for only $350.00, and still make a profit! Peace, Dennis, in Texas,
keeping both states happy.

I have an mdd fw800. I'd like to find a set of speakers,
 the round
apple orbs that will work with my mdd running
 Leopard? any issues?
and are the orbs the same as the ones shipped
 with the Powermac G4
Cube? or are they different? In other words, are all the
 apple pro
 speakers the same?
