Initial Comment: I use an MSN gateway over Jabber instead of using Gaim's native MSN support. I can send and receive messages with my jabber contancts, and I can send messages to my MSN contacts, but I can't receive messages from those MSN contacts. When I figured this out I tested it with the help of a friend who had both MSN and Jabber accounts. Finally, I reverted to using another client (PSI) and the problem went away. That said, it shouldn't be dropping messages.
