[Audyssey] Idea for game

2007-05-27 Thread Ari
Hi guys,
Found this in The Guardian from the UK, would love a game like this, it really
seems charmingly fun!
Ari
Diner Dash Nintendo DS, PSP

nick gillett

Diner Dash makes you the sole member of the waiting staff in a

sequence of progressively larger and busier restaurants. Manage

the queue, seat diners, take orders, pass them to the kitchen,

supply interim snacks, bring the food to the right table, pour

the drinks, offer dessert, bring the bill, clear the table and

drop off the dirty crockery at the kitchen. It starts easy and

gets steadily more taxing with the addition of bigger tables,

different sized parties, diners who eat very slowly even when you

really need their table back and the tendency of customers to

walk out if you take too long over any of the above. Reminiscent

of the gameplay made famous by Nintendo's 1980s Game Watch

series, it requires management of increasingly hard to contain

chaos and demands enormous concentration, which may sound like

hard work, but is actually a pleasingly frenetic way to waste

sizable portions of the tiny amount of time that constitutes

human existence.

Re: [Audyssey] Idea for game

2007-05-27 Thread shaun everiss
I think this game would be in design a reasonable thing to do.
Sounds it would be easy in design to produce.
We only need stereo panning, left, right and centre positions.
In theory we wouldn't even have to use directx, i mean we could but we probably
would not unless we were going to put in ambience and things.
This should be easy.
The math calculations for various variables may take time to work, sound
sorcing for some effects and voices would be a challange, although a load of
the actual sfx are already in sound libraries.

[Audyssey] AJAX MUD client

2007-05-27 Thread Adam Pecillo
Hey,

I have been working on a web based MUD client. The question is if it
is accessible.
Could you please try it and let me know?

You can find my testing setup at: http://pecillo.kicks-ass.org

It is currently running on my server at home. Once we decide if it's
ready for prodution we will move it to a propper server.

I have used the following components:
Apache websever with mod_proxy
Ajaxterm
Openssh client and server. Using auto login with a certificate and
forcing the user to run a specific application.
Mudix - A nice and simple mudclient for the Linux/Unix console.

Re: [Audyssey] Idea for game

2007-05-27 Thread Dark
To be honest, with the description talking about the game bbeing similar to
game watch, I'm guessing it's more of a fast action multi-tasking game
than a theme park, sim city style stratogy, probably requiring some of the
Ds touch screen targiting in the controls, and different minigames for each
task.

while something like that would be fun, in the end, if the focus was action
and minigames, it'd probably end up as a more expanded version of the
Sudworks table from Esp pinball Xtreme. there's no doubt this would be
entertaining, but personally I'd much rather have a serious stratogy
title, - such as sim city or theme park, or better stil, a military
stratogy game such as command and conquer or (even better for fantasy fans),
war craft.

Sorry to sound a negative note, but imho we already have plenty of nice,
destracting game watch style minigames in audio.

Of course, an audio version of Diner dash might be more strategical and less
action and minigame orientated, but we'd probably be talking about a
different style of game here.

Beware the Grue!

Dark.

On a load of book sites I am on there is a load of cracked software.
However in most of the sighted software thats been cracked there is this
piece in the docs saying that if you like the software you should buy it.
You take the good with the bad.
 At 05:31 p.m. 23/05/2007, you wrote:
  Hi all,
I recently ran across a site that was hosting a variety of audio books,
movies and other stuff for download by the blind.
Unfortunately, along with this mass market stuff were quite a few
 cracks
of accessible games and other software designed for the blind. I was
taken
aback at finding this, as I naively thought no sensible blind person
would
host such damaging things.
When you download an audiobook, you are taking away a bit of money from
 a
company that is never going to miss it. Same for audio described movies
to
a lesser extent. But when people host cracks of accessible software,
they
are helping to cripple the development of that software.
The accessible software market, and especially the accessible gaming
market is extremely small, and even losing a few sales to piracy hurts.
It
discourages developers from working on games that we all enjoy, and most
especially from putting in considerable time producing the kind of
immerssive and complex games we are thirsting for.
I would like to spearhead an effort to put a stop to this, as it is
 only
hurting us all in the long run.
If you know of any sites or servers out there hosting pirated
 accessible
software, please write me off list and let me know. I will not mention
your
name, and I won't be a jerk to the person hosting the files.
As I did in this case I mention, I will send a letter to the person
hosting and ask them to please reconsider hosting files that put a
bottleneck on a market that is already very small.
No one is ever going to get rich making software for the blind, but the
developers making the effort should have at least the small reward gained
monetarily from the sale of their hard earned work.
If we can get these sites to stop hosting such files, I promise you it
will make a difference in what we all get to use and play with on our
computers in the future.
You can write me offlist at [EMAIL PROTECTED] if you like. I
promise you any conversation on the topic will be held in strict
confidence.
  Thanks for listening.

I agree that some accessible software is very expensive, but you have to
consider the market this software is selling to and the complexity of the
 software itself.
If Windows XP were only sold to the blind for example, it would cost
several thousand dollars and frankly it would never happen as it would be
 a
money loser for the company producing it.
I for one am grateful that there are quality screenreaders out there for
us at all, considering the heavy amount of time invested in writing this
 stuff.

 well,
not to open a flame about this, but, talking about other
blind-related software, they are really really really too expensive!
I do not talk about games, that cost maximum 40 euro. And, that, for
example, a user wanting to play a game, can use his/her money to buy
the game, instead of... buying cigarettes, or something else that is
 damaging his health.
But what, in my opinion, is too expensive, are other kind of
softwares. Think about Jaws, Window-Eyes, Talks or MobileSpeak for
mobile phones, Sapi5 synths (such as Loquendo)...
Your discussion is valid for games, or small softwares (such as
VoiceEmotion or PowerGramo, the voip assistants), goldwave, sound
 forge and so on
But you lie to yourself if you say that you wouldn't desire to have
free access to your computer or mobile phone, or, at least, to spend
less money! Not to have to spend the double price because we are
blind, for a device which is sold to sighted people with an accessible
 price
Yes, they could develop something free in that case, too. There is a
tool called NVDA for computers, and a Sapi5 called eSpeak, not high
quality but open source and free
 but not for mobile phones
In general, I am against software piracy, as it damages the
alternative free or low-cost software, but I do not lie to myself:
most of softwares we NEED, are a real theft.
Think about what happened on eMule 2 years ago
An anonymous user, having the machine on 24 hours a day, started to
distribute a file called nokia talks 2.xx IMEI key generator, which
just contained an executable wich, once launched, destroyed all
computer data: everything in hard disk, internal or external or
 partitions, was removed
There is no possibility to get any proof on that, but many people
thought (and think) this comes from Nuance, Talks producer, but
writing this on the Internet, as there are no proof, could cause
problems. So, as we say in Italy, incarta e porta a casa. That is,
literally translated, pack it and take it home. It means, take it as it
 is

could wipe the console's memory, put linux on it, and then blind

linux and a linux screen reader. A menu would come up allowing you to play
an accessible game, watch a dvd whose menus would also talk kind of like
 the
context menus in power dvd, or play and navigate a cd. That would be cool.
Either that or instead of wiping the memory and re-flashing it, one could
add to it allowing you to switch between the normal sighted mode, or go
 into
 linux and play blind-friendly games.

Subject: [Audyssey] Wii for the blind

  Hi all,
I was wondering if other gamers out there with Wii systems have managed
 to
memorize the menu system, and if so if you had any tips or shortcuts to
 doing it.
I can get the sports games to work ok, but getting to the actual game is
 a
total pain. The pointer is very sensitive, so you have to have surgeon
 like
steadiness it seems to select the menu items.
BTW, boxing is a fantastic workout, especially if you strap wrist
 weights
on when you play. I challenge anyone out there to go 9 rounds with 5
 pound
weights on your wrists, I promise you will be as sore as I am sitting
 here
 typing with my aching arms.
Anyhow, any info on the Wii menus and navagating them would be great.
  Thanks,
  Che

Re: [Audyssey] Piracy of accessible software

2007-05-27 Thread Charles Rivard
I'll bet it doesn't have anything to do with software piracy. This is in
hopes of getting back on topic.

I agree that some accessible software is very expensive, but you have
 to
consider the market this software is selling to and the complexity of
 the
 software itself.
If Windows XP were only sold to the blind for example, it would cost
several thousand dollars and frankly it would never happen as it would
 be
 a
money loser for the company producing it.
I for one am grateful that there are quality screenreaders out there
 for
us at all, considering the heavy amount of time invested in writing this
 stuff.
  Later,

 well,
not to open a flame about this, but, talking about other
blind-related software, they are really really really too expensive!
It means, take it as it
 is

Re: [Audyssey] fires in the castle fireplaces

2007-05-27 Thread Jude DaShiell
A player may need to do divination with a fire in a fireplace. Certain
herbs when tossed into a fire when a person inhales the resulting smoke
can help with divination. If memory serves bergamot is one of these
herbs. Also, fireplaces have been known sometimes to have compartments
behind or under certain bricks. I've even played a few games where moving
a certain brick would cause the fireplace to turn and reveal a secret
passage beyond it. For a player with initiative, a dive into a fountain or
pool has sometimes got them into places they couldn't have imagined
otherwise.

Re: [Audyssey] Wii for the blind

2007-05-27 Thread jason
Hello everyone it's Jason talking about the wII and other game systems.
I think we should try to to see if we can make these systems accessible for
the blind, I think the right way to approach this matter is getting in
contact with the developers who developed the systems and set up a time and
place to discuss with that individual who we are and to whom it may concern.
Meaning if a blind game developer who is willing to take on the roll of
developing the system for the gblind can be in contact with this
representative and when if developed send him or her the codes if we are
able to figure it out and make it accessible and then posibly go on a
business partnership and then we will not be crossing copy infringement
lines or piracy.
I thought of this as a suggestion
your friend,
Jason

I'd be concerned about the legality of doing something like that. Knowing
these big coporations they might have a heart attack if some smalltime
company stars developing titles for their console. Then again since it's
 not
likely they'll make the effort themselves without serious cash and
statistics, I suppose we have to take any road we can.

No need to wipe the memory, as we can program games for the Wii directly
and take advantage of the Wii's unique features.
I am doing some research into this, but at this point I'm not sure how
 complicated this would be.

would it be possible for blind developers to develop blind friendly
 games
for the different video game consoles out there? That would be cool if
 you
could wipe the console's memory, put linux on it, and then blind
 developers
could make the console completely accessible and write blind friendly
 games
for playstation etcetera. Wjat you'd do is buy a playstation or whatever
insert your cd. the cd would wipe the memory and flash the game console
 with
linux and a linux screen reader. A menu would come up allowing you to
 play
an accessible game, watch a dvd whose menus would also talk kind of like
 the
context menus in power dvd, or play and navigate a cd. That would be
