Re: [Audyssey] linux games for blind people

2007-08-21 Thread Raul a. Gallegos
Hello Josh. I have frotz for Linux working fine and it plays Infocom and
Z code games just fine. I forget where I got it from, but I had to
compile it myself because the binaries available did not work under
Fedora Core 5 which is my Linux OS. Another one I use is frob which is a
TADS game player for Linux. It too works nicely. If you can't find
either of these, let me know off list and I'll send you what I have.

Re: [Audyssey] SoundRTS question: the timer

2007-08-21 Thread SoundMUD
Sorry, you can't disable the timer in beta 8. It should probably be
disabled by default for solo games where it is not really useful and
enabled by default for multiplayer games (or games against the
computer). And I probably should add a desactivation option to the
game menu, and to the options menu.

The timer is twice as fast on high game speed because the world is
twice as fast. This is useful because if you know that it takes 5
minutes to build a given number of soldiers, this will be true in low,
normal or high speed.

Hiya,
If you're at all interested in this kind of game, I've found roguelike
games far more accessible under Linux console than under Windows. In
particular, Nethack and Adom work quite remarkably.
As for interactive fiction, frtoz works, as does frobTADS.
Hope this helps,

Re: [Audyssey] linux games for blind people

2007-08-21 Thread Thomas Ward
Hi Josh,
Yes, there are some Linux infocom interpreters that will work with Orca
under Ubuntu 7.x.
As far as running games like STFC the major problem is there is no
support for DirectX under Linux. There is a .Net Framework called Mono
which would run the game, but no support for DirectX which is a core
feature of the games. There is no Sapi support.
In order to run games under Linux I'd have to rewrite the games to
support stuff like SDL, OpenAl, and Gnome-Speech which is quite an under
taking.
The alternative would be to move to a Java code base.

form of linux or in any linux distribution. or can I?

Hi Soren,
Wile this is off topic I think in the interest of everyone on list I'll
answer your question on list just so everyone knows the answer.
Yes, Linux is becoming much more accessible in recent years. The Ubuntu
Linux OS is by far probably the most accessible with the Fedora Linux OS
as a good second.
One reason I tell newbies to go with Ubuntu is you can run the entire os
off of your cd drive to test it out before installing it. It also can be
run from thumb drives, portible hard drives, and is really a nice little
version of the Linux OS.
Incorperated into Ubuntu is the Orca screen reader which will not only
read the Ubuntu installation for you, but is pretty speech friendly with
the Firefox web browser, Evolution email client, Open Office, and many
core Linux applications now.
That said I don't want anyone to download and install this thinking they
are getting the same access quality as say Jaws 8.0 or Window Eyes 6.1.
Orca works well, and will help you successfully use Ubuntu or Fedora
Linux on a daily basis. However, access still is not on a one to one
comparison with Windows or Windows screen readers. full and total Access
is still a few years behind.
For example, the X-Windows environment offers two desktops Gnome and
KDE. Of the two KDE is the most like Windows XP, but is still
unaccesible, and won't be accessible until KDE 4.0 which is still being
developed from scratch. Gnome however is not bad, and is functionally
usable, but there are still apps and parts of Gnome that don't work as
well with Orca as they should.
I do think as far as accessible games for Linux are needed now that the
OS can be used successfully by a blind user, I have done it many times,
but there is no commercial market to do so.
I could probably write some cheap Java based games that are like Jim
Kitchen games, but actually doing a STFC, Montezuma's Revenge, or
Raceway for Linux would be very time consuming with little cash insentive.

Hi Jason. I do not have the tracks, but need to say why you did not

regret getting the flying car. or rather, not getting it, because

I have only tried Oralux wich I find very cool, but I also want to try the
