Re: [Audyssey] Hobit and Lord of the Rings

2007-11-10 Thread ari
Hi Phil and Lisa,
I'll look at these, but would like if someone could also help me try them
out, to find accessible ones, as I've already tried four inaccessible ones,
please if someone could look.
The games are in the Interactive Fiction Archive, you first go to
 ftp://ftp.funet.fi/pub/mirrors/ftp.ifarchive.org/if-archive/
Then you click on games, then on Spectrum, then on the file Melbourn.zip.
These games were designed by Melbourn House.

Re: [Audyssey] Hobit and Lord of the Rings

2007-11-10 Thread Tobias Vinteus
Hi,
I know that PC versions of many games including those from Level 9 and
also Lord of the Rings and The Hobbit are available from Home of the
Underdogs at:
www.the-underdogs.info

However, that site requires visual verification. A few years back I
remember someone on this list saying something about a special passwor
dfor us blind/visually impaired people, that we could use to access this
site.

I e-mailed the site owner asking for the password but I didn't get a
response. Maybe I should try again.

Their collection of text adventures (interactive fiction) is probably the
best collection of so-called abandonware you'll find on the Internet.

Cheers,
Tobias

Hi Karl,
No, the floo powder is only good for one thing.
That is why I did not allow it to be picked up.
There is another pot in Umbridge's office but it does the same thing.

It takes you to the same place which ends the game.
It is sort of like the hole in the floor in Shades of Doom.

Re: [Audyssey] Rail Racer game pad issue.

It depends.
I don't think there is much point supporting game pads that connect via the
oldstyle game ports as usb has replaced all these.
And they were the first ports to go.
I here now that 3.5 floppies, serial, monitor and paralel ports are all history
now although you still can install them.

Hi Tom,
A list of times for a lap should be easy to get from your beta testers.
Just disable all the other cars on the track and let them run a lap. Then
compile their times and put the game player at the average position.

Thank you very much for your help.

I have yet one more question:
If a flying machine is a unit that is available to be given, why are
there no facilities to build them? Are they strictly a test? Why are
they referred to as a "new login

So, as for these burning ropes, if there is a room to my right, and one to
my left, and I jump and climb down a burning rope and let go in time, then
explore and discover that there is a key in that room that was to my right
above, I cannot get back up to its level? Thanks.

 Hi everyone,
Recently I have switched over to using the mouse with Rail Racer.
However, despite being told over and over again the mouse control is
 the
best way to drive the racer I feel like I can't maintain control of the
racer very well. I either lean to far to the left or right, sometimes
when using the mouse I'll bump the mouse the wrong way and I will go
from 200 MPH to 50 MPH in a second which drives me insane, and I will
get frustrated and press the left mous button instead of the middle one
resulting in a head on crash into the jump.
I have read and listened to Che's tips on using the mouse and try to
follow them but I am clumsy and out of control with it. I can't seam to
make the mouse do what I want, and my performence is terrible to what I
can do with the keyboard. Last night I got so frustrated I nearly
destroyed my mouse by driving it into my mouse pad like a missile. Any
 help please.

 Sincerely,
 Frustrated Racer

Hi thom
Sounds great.
Just clarify the burning ropes thing for me. Lets say I walk on the
ground, now I hear a dripping ledge, now I jump onto the rope, I climb down,
now I hear that the rope is burning, now I jump to the left or to the right.
Let say I jump off to the left, kill a snake and walk right again, now do
you mean if I walk past the burning rope I just jumped off from, that I will
be killed?

Hi everyone,
This is just a quick update note for everyone. As of the 11/10/2007 test
build of Montezuma's Revenge the game now limits you to four swords and
four potions at a time. For example, when pressing the w key it will
tell you that you have 1 of 4 swords, 2 of 4 swords, etc. the potion
key, p, will do the same thing. That allows you to know how many you
have and how close you are to the maximum limit.
In addition, if you jump to grab an item such as a potion or a sword
which will cause you to have too many of that item Sapi will announce
that you have, "too many," and then the game will cansel the jump and
grab option leaving the sword or potion in place to get at a later time.
So let us assume you have 4 potions and try for a fifth one. It will
cansel the jump, and let's say you get injured in a room below that room
and use a potion. You can then back track to the previous room and take
down that potion you couldn't get before.
Also I have just corrected a bug with burning ropes. As of todays build
if you jump left or right and run into a burning rope it will result in
an instant death.
Just thought you guys would like a early heads up of some of the changes
you can expect in the up coming beta.
Cheers.

Re: [Audyssey] Rail Racer game pad issue.

2007-11-10 Thread Thomas Ward
Hi all,
Just an update on my game pad issue. After my previous post I dug
around in my still packed stuff, from the move last summer, and located
my Logetec Rumble Pad. The earlier game pad, a Gravis game pad, had
issues. However, the Logetec Rumble Pad seams to be working fine. It
seams to accelerate, turn, slow down, and work just fine.
I am wondering if anyone has experienced issues with game controllers
non-Logitec, or if my Gravis game pad is on the fritz.

Re: [Audyssey] raceway -

2007-11-10 Thread Charles Rivard
Right. That's exactly what they do. They alert the driver to debris on the
track, they tell the driver how far ahead or behind he or she is from the
nearest competitor, they alert the driver to a flag thrown elsewhere on the
track such as a red or yellow, and other important info. I thought this
would be a good thing to mention because, 1: NASCAR uses them, and 2: You
won't have to rerecord the announcements from the pit crew chief.

[Audyssey] Rail Racer game pad issue.

2007-11-10 Thread Thomas Ward
Hi everyone,
This afternoon I located my game pad, hooked it up, and tried to play
Rail Racer with it. I set it as the default control, mapped all the
buttons, but am having a serious issue using it.
When the race starts I will push the stick all the way forward and the
racer accellerates extremely slow. I am talking about only reaching 50
or maybe 60 before the racer hits the first curve. When on the keyboard
I can have it doing well over 100 before it hits that same curve on that
same track.
Leaning seams to work fine as well as the gear up, gear down, jump, etc
buttons. Just the speed up and slow down control on the stick seams to fail.
Anyone have any suggestions as to what is the matter here? I know the
game works fine because I played with it in Shades of Doom 1.2, LW, etc
with no issues.

Hi,
Oh, yeah. If you qualify as 42 on the track you are going to have a
tough time getting into that lead position. You have 41 other drivers
ahead of you determined in keeping you on their tails and eating all
their dust.

Re: [Audyssey] raceway -

2007-11-10 Thread Thomas Ward
Hi Phil,
Ideally a time trial to get placement would be the best way to do this.
However, in order for me to create such a feature into the game I would
have to have certain data in hand like what is the fastesttime on record
to complete that track, and what was the slowest time to qualify. Then,
I could enter those times in the random generator to place the other
cars on the track and place you amung them.
So for the moment the game will simply select a random placement of the
cars, but if I should ever get the necessary data to make a time trial
possible I would convert the game over to a true Nascar time trial to
qualify for placement.

Re: [Audyssey] muggle devices in scw

2007-11-10 Thread nicol
Charles, I've been to the muggles studies classroom. I can't find a way to
do something with the muggle devices, that's why I ask. I will not ask a
question if I haven't been to the muggles studies classroom.
When I press x on a muggle device within my inventory, sarah says: caution,
muggle devices do not work inside the castle.
Pressing enter does nothing.

These are the sort of things that makes gaming fun. What can you do with
them?? Experiment and have fun finding out. For example, if you don't know
what the powder you find in the Slitherin' common room is for, use it and
gain information for the next time you play. You'll know what the powder is
for, and know what to do.

Re: [Audyssey] that nightmare creature in sarah

2007-11-10 Thread Phil Vlasak
Hi Nicol,
I know the game is over after she is kissed by a dementor, but it does not
say that Sarah actually dies.
I leave that up to you to decide.
The clapping sound is Sarah's father apparating near her and then he speaks.
Or he should speak, "Sarah? Sarah, wake up."
The short tune playing is her loosing all her magical energy.

Most text adventure games I play these days are under Linux. It seems
that Linux has some of the best game intrepraters out, but not everyone
uses Linux on here.

Frotz is a good one for z5 and z8 games, and frob is good for tads
games. Scare is good for Adrift ones, and agil is good for agt games.

No, the boggarts also kills sarah if she comes in contact with them.
They kisses her and then its game over.
Btw what sound did you use for the dementor?
If sarah comes in contact with a dementor, the first thing I hear is sarah
screaming, all right? That's easy to figure out. Then I hear another sort of
screaming sound, is that also sarah?
Then I hear the dementor/boggart kissing her, that I clearly understand. But
then I hear a short tune playing, what does this signifies? And then I hear
a clapping sound, does it mean sarah loose all her magical energy?
Btw say for instance sarah looses all her magical energy, not by a dementor
but just by all the other ghosts, will it make the same sound? Let me
rephrase, say for instance peeves attacks sarah over and over until she
have no more magical energy left, will I then hear the same clapping sound?

Hi Gary,
Your racing suit idea sounds cool. Not however the realistic
physical damage from hitting the wall though.
Last night I was watching the Nascar Craftsman Truck series race in
Phoenix, on the Speed Channel and that one truck hit the inner wall
pretty good. it left a huge crack in the wall. My wife said it looked
pretty bad. Though Kyle Busch did a great job in taking the led and
staying in it until the end.

Re: [Audyssey] raceway -

2007-11-10 Thread Thomas Ward
Hi Gary,
Yeah, it is not that difficult to create a flat database using an xml
file wich holds various stuff like driver, sponsor, car owner, team,
etc. An example xml database entry might look like this.

Dale Earnhardt Jr.
Chevrolet.
Teresa Earnhardt.
Budweiser.
Dale Earnhardt Incorporated.

As you can see from the sample above the xml flat database format is
very simple to edit the entries in the nodes. You can do it in notepad
or what ever text editor you like.
As for accessing the drivers actual stats such as standings, earnings,
points, etc that needs to be stored somewhere safe. I would hate to see
a gamer cheat by editing his or her over all score for the season to win
the USA Racing Cup. There will be 36 races in all to win that cup and it
is something that has to be earned not cheated.

Re: [Audyssey] raceway -

2007-11-10 Thread Charles Rivard
Good idea, Phil. Different driving strategies are used based on where you
start in a race. It would add to replay value if you are randomly put into
the field. You drive differently if you are on the pole as opposed to if
you start dead last, in forty second position. This is where the race
length also plays a critical part. If you want to finish first, first, you
have to finish.

Actually, you don't need another pit chief, because NASCAR teams have hired
spotters who are in the crowd, usually at a point where they get a good view
of the track, who report to the driver if there is a wreck or other activity
they should know about. The radio is used just as your pit crew chief is
doing. HTH

Re: [Audyssey] raceway -

2007-11-10 Thread Thomas Ward

Hi Gary,

Quote
Nascars don't start races at a stand still.
End quote

I know. That is one reason there is no start engine sound in the trailer
and the game. When the race begins it is assumed the car is already
started, engine is warmed up, and the car is ready to roll the moment
you put it in first and hit the gas peddle which is control for
keyboarders and the gas peddle for those who will have the wheel and
peddle set.

Quote
There are 2 rows of cars slowing moving and its up to the Flag man to toss
the flag of green if all cars at least running properly inle.
Usually the first few rolls of cars that come out of turn four will see the
flagman go green.
End quote

Right. When the flag goes green you will hear your pit crew say: "go,
go, go."Which means the flag is green, and get your car in high gear and
burn rubber down the track.

Quote
This does bring up a point. certain points on the brack are lights for
condition of race and your crew chief should tell you what you need to do.
Like go high to get around a wreck.
End quote

Hmmm... That could be difficult. James North initially recorded the crew
chief voice samples, and he made nothing of this sort. If we are going
to get into this depth of detail with pit chief interaction then we need
someone else to rerecord the pit chief voices and get a list of what we
need. Any ideas here?

Hi Nicol,
A real dementor. As far as Sarah goes Dementor's are the most
frightening creature she knows. That is why the Bogart takes the form of
a Dementor in the game. Not only does it fit well with the book, but
those creatures are known to take on the form of the thing you fear
most. Which in this case is a Dementor.

[Audyssey] Hobit and Lord of the Rings

2007-11-10 Thread ari
Hi all,
I've again found Lord of the Rings and Hobbit games, but again, I have a
problem with .z80 files, not being able to find an accessible interpreter or
emulator, could anyone please help? There must be someone on here who might
have tried spectrum games?
Ari

[Audyssey] that nightmare creature in sarah

2007-11-10 Thread nicol
I'm quoting from the manual
The Hard difficulty setting is for experts that can get through the game
quickly, and for those who are too smart for their own good. It has two
extra creatures stalking the corridors and one is a real nightmare.
Phil, if you think answering this question will spoil the game for me,
please say so. Its not my intention to ask for spoilers. AS soon as the new
patch is available I'm first going to beat the game on easy and standard and
then on hard, but what is this nightmare creature you are talking about?

[Audyssey] Time to Get your mouse Movin'

2007-11-10 Thread Ken the Crazy
Okay, you fast action arcade lovers,
Wrecking ball beta 1 is out at
www.dti.us.tt
and has lots of new sound effects and bonuses. It has ten levels and two modes
of game play--classic mode, called Super Breakout, in which you start by
hitting the ball with your paddle--not launching it as in previous versions,
and Wrecking Ball mode where you launch the ball. Nearly everything you do in
the game other than checking stats and adjusting volume can be done with the
mouse, but if you prefer the keyboard you can play too. (Personally, I play
with both keyboard and mouse.)
The newest thing, besides the modes and the fact that the bonuses actually work
in this version, is that when the ball hits the ceiling, the blocks aren't the
only things to shrink--your mouse-controlled paddle does too.
The manual should explain everything you need to know about how to play.
Oh, the bug where the paddle caught the ball is fixed--it only makes the ball
move while it's moving so keyboard players don't have to worry about the
unwanted paddle.
If you have ideas on how to improve the game, let me know. There are more
plans in the works, such as additional bonuses, but most of what I'll be doing
is getting the TTS stuff out and replacing it with human speech--and oh yeah,
I've decided to make it donationware--mostly because I don't have the slightest
idea on programming licensing stuff and just don't feel like messing with it,
so have fun.
