2008-05-04 Thread Tom Randall
Howdy Tyler and all.

Yeah the buttons are fine to work with once you get used to them they
are a bit small so if you don't like small buttons you are going to have
trouble. I don't mind them at all.

The order of the buttons is not found on gamefaqs I asked Mary Beth to
describe them.

Hope this helps.

Hi

Are those buttons from left to right?
Do you find the buttons easy to work with? (the bottom ones that is).
I'm not sure what else to ask right now. I'm way too tired, but I'll
hopefully come up with more, hehe.
Btw, where exactly did you read that on gamefaqs? I didn't find it

 Hi

I'm just curious, has anyone really tried messing around with the
saves from game faqs (it would be cool to show that off in tekkin!
 hey, I got all those
movies unlocked!). From what I hear you just unzip the save file, drop
 it
onto the memory stick in the savegame folder and your golden. Not
sure,
 though.
According to gamefaqs yes that is what you do. I have not tried it
yet
since I don't know enough about just playing the game so far.

Anyway, tom, can you tell when the psp goes into sleep mode and when
it actually shuts off? I am not sure if mine is set up to work this
way or not, still fiddling with the power save menu settings. One
thing, the psp makes a sound when it comes on which is great, but I
wish it made one when it shut off. It is no big deal though you just
hold the switch up for about 3 to 4 seconds to be sure it is off.
Moreover, is half volume using headphones loud enough?
Keep in mind volume will reduce battery life a lot if its not turned
low and of course you can turn the screen down too, since you
 probbably don't need
 it grin.
Of course this depends somewhat on what earphones you use and how
noisy
the environment is where you are playing, I just am using some earbuds
right now because that is what I have until I find something better,
but
the volume seems more than adequate with it not turned up all the way.
And yes I have the screen set on minimal brightness.
I wonder how multiplayer would work on it? Probably wouldn't be
too accessible since it would display different things for each game,
for example, if a psp wasn't around, or if one was, it might give you
 a yes no
option to try again, or press x to cancel and go back to main menu
etc.
I have no information on this yet as I do not know anyone else near me
with a psp that I can experiment with. I will report on this when and
if I find out more information.
How about audio? Have you fooled around with that (From when I used it
 audio was
about as smooth as you can hear, as smooth as a console).
If you mean the game audio it is absolutely fantastic it is even good
through the dinky little speakers on the psp itself. I am considering

picking up some little portable speakers for use with it and some of
 my other audio gadgets.
And how big are the games? I forget- I hear you can buy cases for them
 which I'll do. My
birthdays in July, so I'll probably get one around then. What games to

you have now for it? Not sure if I asked that.
The little game disks are very small, a little smaller than a 3.5 inch
floppy. They seem to come in what looks like a dvd case that holds
the
game and the manual. The games I have so far are Tekken dark
resurrection and dakster or however you spell that one. I don't know
anything about buying cases for the disks but I'd imagine you can.
And what are the order of buttons from left to right on the bottom?
Oh,
also, I forgot. I heard on some
website or other that when you open the UMD drive it automatically
stops the game, but just don't hold it so the game would fall out
 (there used to be a
rumor of a psp UMD disc flying out of the system, but this was false,
 just
 use common sense).

 Hello fellow gamers.

I am just writing to let you guys/gals know about a project I am
working on. Basically what I am doing is to write up a detailed
description of at least some of the screens and menus that you run
into when using the psp and playing Tekken to make the unit more
useable for a blind gamer. What I have done so far is a description of

what Sony calls the home menu, the menu that comes up when you either
turn the psp on with no game inserted or you exit a game via the home
key. This is the menu you need to access to play music or movies and
whatnot on your psp. Also, I have done a fairly detailed description
on the mode selecter menu in Tekken which is basically the menu you
get to if you start the game and hit the start button where you decide

what kind of game you want to play and make various other changes and
pretty much everything else. I am fairly sure I am going to have to
add quite a bit to this one before you will be able to really use a
lot of it by yourself, mainly descriptions of what to do in some of
the submenus. Keep in mind that even when I am done with this, there
are parts that are going to either be really hard or require sighted
assistance such as doing your initial profile which you have to do the

first time you start the game. Lastly, I have described how to get
into the tutorial which shows you how to do basic moves and attacks
and so on. The tutorial is actually pretty useful if you know what
order the different moves and stuff are presented. This project is
just starting and I am not going to give what I have out right now
until I get it in a form that I am happier with and until I make sure
that the stuff that I say can be done can really be done without
sight. The reason that I chose to work on the screens and menus for
Tekken is quite simply that this is the game that I am most interested

in learning myself. Since I am writing the stuff up for myself I am
hoping it may eventually be good enough to help some other folks out
who may either have a psp already or are considering getting one. As
I said this project is in its infancy right now and it will be a work
in progress, I will most likely add more games to it as I get them and

learn them. I'd like to say here that this project would not be
possible if it were not for my wife Mary Beth who is providing
indespensible help with reading the various screens and in general
figuring things out for me so I can note them down. I think she's
hooked on the psp already lol. Anyhow, I will keep you guys posted on
major work that is done on the project and I will let you know when I
think it is good enough to give out to those who might want it.

 Best regards,

 Tom

oh. also. kind of a cheap plug. but for ps2, I'll be posting up the order

there I posted. but that is for the ps2 and is probably different for the

some serious work, but then, it's a wiki so anyone can work on it so long as
you have an account.

there's also a mailing list that deals with console gaming in general, and
I'm in the process of getting more samples posted. I've just been a bit

So ya. people who are interested in mlb the show can read up on that later

 Hey Tyler.

Thanks for your thoughts and tips on the psp, keep em coming. Oh yeah
you can tell just from looking at the system that it is not something
you want to be banging around even though it actually looks well
constructed. It is not flimsy or anything.

Oh no worries I am not one of these people who beats heck out of their
portable devices if anything I tend to baby them more than I absolutely
need to. My psp is absolutely in its case the minute I am not using it
and that is where it stays until I take it out again. From what I've
read there's not much you can do about the fingerprints and such other
than to not touch the screen which I am careful not to do, and to just
keep some of those glasses cleaning cloths around and give your psp a
 wipe down every so often.

Just to clarify, what I meant by the menus not being accessible is that
you will have to do some memorizing, in order to use the other functions
like music and movies, however the structure really does not look all
that complicated and I am used to doing that sort of thing from using
largely inaccessible ham radio gear. Like you I do have other means of
playing music so the psp will not be used really heavily for this,
however the movies thing looks pretty cool if I can get it working. Yes
I read something about the buttons on the slim model being much more
reliable I think it was on gamefaqs.

 Have a good day.

 Hi there

I just found out there is a slim model out which does have that
thumb-into-the door design. This isn't a problem however, and you got
 the
daxter pack btw. That's a good one, and yeah I agree- there's also a
 star
wars one, which comes with a 32 mb memory stick which is good for saving

games. Oh yeah. The psp is very prone to smudges and such, and be very
careful (treat it as you would an ipod or something). This is not a toy.
 It
is very fragile, the UMD drive being the most notable fragile thing.
 However
the screen is very prone to losing pixils since its in LCD display, so
 be
very careful with that (good job on the screen protector). I disagree
 there,
actually, about the menu structure; think of it like thi.s Say you have
 the
system settings on the leftmost side, you go right one and you have your

music, right one more and you can browse the web or some such (this
 isn't
from memory, its just an example). Also I think you got the better
 deal-
this is a slimmer psp and the buttons, apparently, have been aproved on.

 Hope this helps

I'm not sure about Hal, but this game is perfectly accessible with jaws8 at

don't use the map at al, btw. As for contacting the dev, ther person who got
me into this game is blind as well and apparently talks to him regularly,
and he's usually very good about making accessibility changes. He says he
can't go through and tag all the immages though, these realms are 100x100
coordinate plains and there's something like 12 of them, all crammed with
immages. It takes a lot of patience and using some unorthadox methods, but
this game is definitely playable.

Hi Shadowdragon,

well, I just will try it some more today and see what I can do with my

When you don't use the map, how do you navigate in the game? How can you

Thanks and regards

[Audyssey] Card Games on the net

2008-05-04 Thread Lora
Hi,

I know there are numerous sites out there where one can play card games
ranging from Texas Hold'em to Pinochle, Hearts and Bridge with other people.

Are any of these card game sites accessible with JAWS? I'm willing to go
through some work to make them accessible, even rekindling my knowledge of
JAWS scripting, but if there are sites out there that already work, or work
with some tweaking, I'd love to know.

I already know about AllInPlay, and it's a great thing, but there are
numerous other games I'd like to play out there ... And maybe even for
money, and I'm trying to figure out what's available.

Failing that, are there good accessible versions of these games? I know
there are some designers of games for blind people out there, but one of my
frustrations is that the strategy of the computer players is very basic. I
can win against the Hearts game I have every time, and the same is true for
backgammon (yes, I know, not a card game, but a case in point). Ideally,
I'd like to find games designed for the sighted gaming community that either
work well with JAWS by chance, or which can be modified to do so.

Thanks for any help you can offer.

Lora

Re: [Audyssey] Land of hope

2008-05-04 Thread Shadow Dragon
That's one of the tough parts. With jaws you just turn off the virtual focus
and tab to a certain part on the screen, where it says refresh the main
screen. Then you use the arrow keys to move around, and turn back on the
virtual cursor when you want to see where you are, where you're going, etc.
I don't know how well this would work with other screen readers, but once
you've adjusted to it it gets easier.

Hi Nicol,
If memory serves me correctly the score posting feature checks to see if
your score is higher than the highest score not the lowest score on the

will get harder as you progress through the game and on higher
difficulties, from what i have read in the manual, but dd being a free
game is nex to impossible to complete. And the sound of descending ships
in trupenam is much more relaxing than in dd. A ship's landing sound
getting louder and louder is to me much stressfull than a sound increasing
in pitch. A negative statement was made about trupenam on list long

trupenam is like. From what i have mentioned here i'm sure folks will
agree with me that statement is not true, especially with the random

[Audyssey] Web master question

2008-05-04 Thread Gary Whittington
Ok question for you web masters out there.

When changing nameservers, will the files transfer over to the web host server?

I had in the past back up my web site files on my computer, but I think I don't
need to really do that and then when the switch is made I can not remember if I
had to restore my files on the new server.

I had done this before and forgot.
 Thanks

 Howdy Tyler and all.

Yeah the buttons are fine to work with once you get used to them they
are a bit small so if you don't like small buttons you are going to have
trouble. I don't mind them at all.

The order of the buttons is not found on gamefaqs I asked Mary Beth to
 describe them.

 Hope this helps.

The little game disks are very

you'l have to physically transfer them. all name servers do is tell the dns
server what address your web server is at. think of it is a really really

Ok question for you web masters out there.

When changing nameservers, will the files transfer over to the web host
 server?

I had in the past back up my web site files on my computer, but I think I
don't need to really do that and then when the switch is made I can not
remember if I had to restore my files on the new server.

I had done this before and forgot.
 Thanks

there's also a mailing list that deals with console gaming in general, and

 Tom

As for your comparison to games like KoL, that's different. This game uses a
coordinate based system to move, and you click on immages that are different

Its like I said, it takes a little adjusting to and patience, but for me its

Sryth or KoL. I suppose its your opinion weather or not you want to play I

no Orin, sorry if I didn't put that correctly.

It was another company who said they didn't want blind people playing their
game (I never got that exact response myself, but someone I know did).
Cthulhu nation were incredibly eager to help though they had no experience
in net accessibility.

what they needed was someone to go through the game and provide really good
accessibility feedback, as I said on the list a while ago (check the
archives for details), I wasn't able to myself because of limited time, but
if anyone else wants to, it would be a good thing.

I didn't meanpushing buttons unstrategically, obviously if you can work out
where the stats, fight etc links are by the web addresses, fair enough,
I just find going through literally hundreds of http, random letters or java
script and guessing which does what to be something of a nightmare with a
game like lands of hope.

hal reads links fine with no trouble, even mouse over stuff tends to be
relatively easy sinse the virtual focus has ways of dealing with list etc
(and if necessary, there's always functions to get a complete list of links
and controls). it's just the lack of labling and need to guess like heck
that I find to be a pest, particularly as often the description text to
tell you what such and such a link has does appears in random places on the
page and needs finding with the Vf.

if I get some time, I'll try lands of hope again with Hal 9, to see if
there's an improvement, but it's not on my major list of priorities, sinse
I'd much rather be battling with a game than battling with the interface.

Just from playing the demo of trupenam i have gathered that its much more
comfortable than dark destroyer. In dd you have to tap your arrows
continuously to move your ship; holding down the arrows doesn't work. In
trupenam you can hold down the arrows to move your ship. In dd you have
 to
move your ship quite a distance to target an enemy. In trupenam you only
have to hold down the arrows for a short distance before an enemy is
targeted. Dd doesn't have random special items to pick up like trupenam,
only 5 bombs given to you at the start of the game. Dd doesn't have the
nice gorbian levels trupenam has where you have to target your enemy
horrizontally and vertically. It doesn't have the nice bonus rounds
trupenam has namely landing round and falling ships round. Surely
 trupenam
will get harder as you progress through the game and on higher
difficulties, from what i have read in the manual, but dd being a free
game is nex to impossible to complete. And the sound of descending ships
in trupenam is much more relaxing than in dd. A ship's landing sound
getting louder and louder is to me much stressfull than a sound
 increasing
in pitch. A negative statement was made about trupenam on list long
ago. It was said that if you played dark destroyer 30 times you know what
trupenam is like. From what i have mentioned here i'm sure folks will
agree with me that statement is not true, especially with the random
special items you can pick up. And in trupenam you also have base
reinforcers and ground nukes. In dd if 10 ships has landed its lights
 out.

Hey Tyler.

I described the buttons from left to right as you requested. Here is
the info that I have about transferring game saves as taken directly
from the psp hardware faq.
Q: Can game saves be e-mailed to other people?
A: Definitely. Since the PSP memory stick duo or pro duo communicates
with a PC, you can bring over saved game data to your PC and then email
it to a friend. I have done this myself, and there have been no
problems whatsoever. GameFAQs and other PSP sites host PSP game saves
for gamers to download.
He does not give specifics as to what file/folder you need to move but I
am pretty sure we can probably figure it out.

Yeah the buttons are fine to work with once you get used to them they
are a bit small so if you don't like small buttons you are going to
have trouble.

Btw, where exactly did you read
that on gamefaqs? I didn't find it there?

 Hi

I'm just curious, has anyone really tried messing around with the
saves from game faqs (it would be cool to show that off in tekkin!
hey, I got all those movies unlocked!). From what I hear you just
unzip the save file, drop it
onto the memory stick in the savegame folder and your golden. Not
 sure,

Keep in mind volume will reduce battery life a lot if its not turned
low and of course you can turn the screen down too, since you
 probbably don't need it grin.
Of course this depends somewhat on what earphones you use and how
 noisy
the environment is where you are playing, I just am using some
earbuds right now because that is what I have until I find something
 better,
 but
the volume seems more than adequate with it not turned up all the
way. And yes I have the screen set on minimal brightness.
I wonder how multiplayer would work on it? Probably wouldn't be
too accessible since it would display different things for each game,

for example, if a psp wasn't around, or if one was, it

Re: [Audyssey] Land of hope

2008-05-04 Thread Shadow Dragon
It must be something in the way hal reads links then, because Jaws doesn't
have any of the problems you've mensioned, it reads the links as they are,
none of the http links or the source url for the link or any of that sort of
thing. Even the graphical map uh, I'm not sure what they're caled but jaws
calls them clickable on mouse overs, so probably links in some form or
another, are just a little kind of jumble of numbers and letters, no more
than 10 characters long. Either way like I said, its your choice. I
personally think its a fairly decent game, though from what you've said in
the past you'd get bored of it rather quickly since it sort of turns into a
number crunch after a while.

Hi,
Yes I added candy, health boosters, letter's, etc. I advise picking up

be able to release a speculator's beta, my term for a beta where you
can make comments and suggestions, and if possible put them in before
my release date. I like to have release dates, in my mind, to work as
hard as possible to get it done. I will have about 20 objects
available picked up, including money. What will the money be used for.
There's not anything to buy for yourself. Once you beat the game it
will explain alot of what you should do, money, etc.

Hint: Spoiler as well... Technically you can't go below 0. You start
at X 2 and Z 2. Go down 2. You'll be in the forest. :).

Note: You'll also be getting emails from people...you can't respond

Hi list,

However, I wonder if someone can tell me what the numbers and words stand
for at the beginning of the combat screen.
For example:

15%
-5
no wall
no def bonus
no pen
25%

I believe it says something like that or close to it.

Also, I received 3 (72 hours) premium service days of the game for free.
The report said that it was because of my score or experience.
Is this just a one time thing or is this a glitch in the program?
It just switched into premium service mode all of a sudden.
Thanks,

 Heya Tyler.

Oh no worries man it's gonna get done, but it is going to take a lot of
time it is not going to be something we can do overnight this is a huge
project. Mary Beth says we have just scratched the surface of those
menus in Tekken. I am real glad she has the interest to help me out
with this project or it would not be happening.

This was kind of something I was hoping somebody had done when I decided
to get a psp but it does not seem like anyone has so I figure we ought
to do it to help others out as well as ourselves. Once I get the basic
structure in place and once you actually have a psp to play with perhaps
if you get some other games besides tekken we can colaborate on this if
you have somebody who can help you out with the initial stuff.

Anyhow I'll keep you and the list posted as we go along.

As
I said this project is in its

Hopefully this helps someone. I really like this idea- I mean sure, some
people might think of it as cheating, but...well, for example, some games
let you have more than 1 profile. So you could work on profile 2 while
profile one would have the complete tekkin, everything complete, so it
wouldn't spoil the fun.

Re: [Audyssey] windows xp on psp

2008-05-04 Thread Valiant8086 (on laptop)
Hi.
I don't know anything about this getting xp to work on a ps3, but that was
probably a relatively simple process. I would imagine the ps3 uses a
standard processor, a graphics chip, a sound card, and a hard drive.

No its not, and it never will be. PSP is its own OS. I don't know how
someone got xp working on a ps3, and I've no desire to. Its probably more
work with less rewards and would involve pyroting which I'm not a fan of
 (or
 hacking, whatever you call it).

In simple terms, a mud is a multiplayer text base game. Here's some more
information about muds.

i'm a fan of Skype myself, which also has voice chatting and file
 transfer
 capabilities.

Btw, what is dragonrealms? an online game I assume, but not one I've

What's a good accesible chat application? I play Dragon Realms, and it
would be useful to communicate with other players without email. I
 think
most of them use AOL Instant Messenger.

Re: [Audyssey] Psp project in the works.

2008-05-04 Thread Tom Randall
Hi,

Well I don't know enough to say that it is impossible to do this from a
technical standpoint, however I must say I think it is very very very
unlikely that anyone will take this on. Also, I suspect that even if
somebody did make some kind of thing akin to rock box for the psp's home
menu I suspect that this still wound not help us once you actually
started a game. I agree it's a cool thing to dream about though smile

Re: [Audyssey] saving guide for psp was: psp gaming

2008-05-04 Thread Tom Randall
Hey thanks for this Tyler. I agree it is all in how you use this stuff,
sure some will use it to more or less cheat on the games but it can be
used perhaps to get past parts of a game that cannot be done without
sight, or it could be used for other things I am sure but I cannot think
of them at the moment, I must be getting tired lol. Yes I am trying to
remember to trim these messages down as well.

Thanks again.

Tom
