Re: [Audyssey] JS install crashes during install

2012-10-11 Thread shaun everiss

well garry, you should download the latest installer.
due to the new certificate polocy every windows installer package
that is from january 2010 to 8 october 2012 is now defunked and useless.

Several companies have not updated.
inno has just upgraded their scripts though since innos are not msis
they shouldn't be effected.

In fact I just tested inno installer I had and its not effected.
Never the less assume that any installer with certifficates signed
after january 1 2010 to the present month are now rubbish.
anything after say the 10th of this month and up will work though as
previders can't make 512 bit certifficates anymore.
Some like adobe have updated bits of stuff, and assume other
companies will start releasing programs in due cource.
this cert thing has to do with security certifficates on emails,
websites and activex controls so yeah.
Saying that if you are wanting to create a new installer and need a
certifficate you shouldn't have a problem.
any old installer made from the period january 2010 to september 2012
is now in the can.

anything made after october 10th or before january 1 is still active.
You could just delete the certifficate unless you really want it in there.
Right now expect everything you do as outdated and there fore crap!
everyone's software is now a pile of junky crap since everyone is effected.
Personally I would have actually made sure all software was upgraded
rather than ms forcing the upgrade on people that obviously hadn't
upgraded yet to the new security model.

Now users and developers will have to wait for upgrades or redo their certs.
As a user I am angry at ms for not actually getting everything set
with its previders like verisign to verify that most had upgraded
before making the change.
You can crack the registry temperarily to lower your security, but
you will then put your system at risk though ms does acknowledge that
for a time there will be a backlog as everyone tries to resign their
security with the new standard.

The cheapest way is to avoid ms installers.
if you do need ms components aparently they will install since
windows will allow for them to be installed.
For the general blind dev that has payed probably a lot to get their
certs concider what you need that security for.

it may be easier to kill that or stop using windows installers all together.
If you are new though then you can only buy the new standard now so
there is no problem.

2012-10-11 Thread shaun everiss

hmmm well eamon is dos console and uses innosetup.
But I can ask if there are certificates used, since ms increased the
certifficates to 1024 bits I have found several programs sony media
go, adobe acrobat and shockwave and a few others that are not getting
new versions right now.

audible is another.
basically anything that has an certifficate after january 2010 is now
unless already loaded not going to install no matter what you do
unless you hack the registry and lower your security which is not wise at all.

Hi kieth.

very simple, i believe you just opened the wrong file. In say the
eamon deluxe demo adventure folder there are two exe files, one
just called "eamon deluxe demo adventure" and one called "eamon
deluxe demo adventure vi mode"

Obviously you want the vi mode one, sinse the other will open up
with dosbox and that is! incompatible with all screen readers.

Once you run that file a console window should appear that you
can read with the window eyes curser asking if you want to activate
vi compatibility mode. From there, follow the instructions and you
should be fine.

Hi kieth.

that is a question with a complicated answer.

the bad news is that the only way to play them is with an aple Ii
emulator, and those don't output screen readable text.

the good news however is that Eamon deluxe is currently in
developement, which is an eamon upgrade that will run on windows
xp and is intended to run all the classic eamon adventures. It
even has a screen reader friendly format that redoes the menues in
a way that is readable with a virtual curser.

Eamon deluxe 5.0 is currently in developement and is being beta
tested by myself and several others.

some stand alone Eamon deluxe adventures can be found on
http://www.eamonag.org/pages/eamondx.htm

If however you'd like a copy of the beta, send an E-mail to
eamondel...@gmail.com

I'd highly recommend eamon. it was a text adventure rpg system. it
has a simple parza but one which can still create puzzles without!
uess the verb or other horribleness, it has combat, companions
and other fun stuff, and adventures range from simple 10 minute
dungeon hacks to full on epic quests that take hours to finish.

Writing of course varies with the author, though some I've played
have been fantastically wr written.

Best of all in my book is the fact that you can go
through multipel adventures with the same character, gaining
treasure, then coming back to the guild of free adventurers
after each outing to put your money in the bank or even spend it
on better weapons or improving your stats.

There are even people still writing adventures for Eammon
deluxe today, with three new ones produced this year, plus, frank
black the developer as he converts classic apple adventures to
eamon deluxe is making several improvements and changes along the way as well.

I'd certainly recommend it if you like rpgs.

That's not what I meant. I did unzip it. I then tried to play the game
from the folder that the unzipping produced. That is when I got the
"untitled" window appearing and would freeze my system. I was forced to go
into the folder that was produced after unzipping the file and cut and then
pasted the contents of that folder into another folder i created on my
computer. I then hit enter on the VI executable file and got the yes or no
prompt for the screen reader useage. Not sure why the untitled window was
appearing in the first place. I always unzip .zip files.

Generally as a basic universal rule you should never! run stuff without
unzipping first precisely because it rarely works when files are
compressed, whatever kind of program it is.

Still, I'm glad you've got it running now sinse Eamon is loads of fun.

Re: [Audyssey] Smugglers 5 now accessible

2012-10-11 Thread dark
Unfortunately the good columnization with virtual curser is a strength of
Hal (and possibly window eyes), and something I like. It's probably not
something niels can actually change without reconfiguring the hole
interface, and to be honest he's already done far more than most devs in
terms of labelling all his images in understandable text.

Probably a better way around would be for some advanced jfw person to
create some scripts for the game, maybe using that hotspot clicker, and then
share them around, indeed I've always been a little confused why someone
doesn't do this, sinse I've heard some advanced jaws users say they got
things running smoothly.

As to nvda, well I suspect that is a situation will which simply will
improve as nvda developes. After all, four years ago when we were looking
at the compatibility of s4, nvda didn't have! a virtual curser at all.

The shop screen is a pretty nice mess if you're using NVDA or JFW. I bet
it works a lot better with hal because the game works better with it in
general. I can't help saying that I really miss the list boxes from S3 in
this area a lot. I may have to contact Neil and see if he could do
anything here so the screen contents aren't as scattered as they are now.

Hi.

good news!

niels has now finished the patch for smugglers 5 that fixes the combat
problem. Get the patch at http://nbsd.fileburst.com/Smugglers5
_Patch_AllVersions_To_V100c.exe
and just run it to have your copy of the game updated.

it works on the demo or the full versions, so you can now try the demo
too!

And for anyone who wants to download the demo, find it at
http://www.nielsbauergames.com/index.html

Also note that if you buy the game you can get all four! previous
smugglers

games, plus the addon for s3 and I believe s2 for just 2.5 usd! which is
pretty fantastic even taking into account eh fact that unfortunately s2
has

unlabled images of ship parts meaning it's not completely doable with a
screen reader (I don't know about s1).

So enjoy! and please support niels by buying the game. The reason he
didn't!

include the compatibility mode for empires and dungeons 2 was that not
enough people showed interest, so now is the chance to make a real
difference! if you ever wanted complex accessible games, here they are!

I'm a little surprised kieth you even tried to run it without unzipping.

Generally as a basic universal rule you should never! run stuff without
unzipping first precisely because it rarely works when files are

Still, I'm glad you've got it running now sinse Eamon is loads of fun.
Runcible cargo is a true masterpeace, and realm of fantasy is good for some

I think there will be more stand alone adventures coming soon, but if you

there are a good 20 or so adventures converted ranging from some dire to
some truly exceptional ones.

Re: [Audyssey] emon deluxe stand alone adventure issue

2012-10-11 Thread Keith
I figured out what was wrong. I could not get the program to work because I
had to transfer the contents of the .zip file that was extracted to a new
folder. Meaning, I had to open the .zip archive, extract all the contents
into a new folder, and then move the contents to another folder. Otherwise,
the program would just hand at the "untitled" window and nothing would
happen.

Hi Keith,

That's the general idea with Dos applications. You don't point and
click on things. You type commands like quit to quit the program, or
depending on the application press a command like q and enter. If you
are going to use Dos games you are going to have to stop treating them
like Windows apps with a GUI.

[Audyssey] Smugglers 5 now accessible

2012-10-11 Thread dark
Hi.

good news!

niels has now finished the patch for smugglers 5 that fixes the combat problem.
Get the patch at http://nbsd.fileburst.com/Smugglers5
_Patch_AllVersions_To_V100c.exe
and just run it to have your copy of the game updated.

it works on the demo or the full versions, so you can now try the demo too!

And for anyone who wants to download the demo, find it at
http://www.nielsbauergames.com/index.html

Also note that if you buy the game you can get all four! previous smugglers
games, plus the addon for s3 and I believe s2 for just 2.5 usd! which is
pretty fantastic even taking into account eh fact that unfortunately s2 has
unlabled images of ship parts meaning it's not completely doable with a screen
reader (I don't know about s1).

So enjoy! and please support niels by buying the game. The reason he didn't!
include the compatibility mode for empires and dungeons 2 was that not enough
people showed interest, so now is the chance to make a real difference! if you
ever wanted complex accessible games, here they are!

Beware the grue!

Re: [Audyssey] Okay, got stand alone Emon game to run, what about VI controls...

2012-10-11 Thread dark
xp sp3 is fine, that's what I've got over here on my laptop too, which is
why i suggested the alt enter business..

eamon is a dos style program, as is eamon deluxe, so there is no clicking
involved, you need to enter text. I find in supernova I need to read the
screen with my virtual curser, then flick out of it to write commands, then
flick back in (this is quicker than it sounds).

When you first run the file you will be asked whether to run vi
compatibility mode and to confirm by hitting y or n, which you will need to
type on the keyboard.

You'll then be asked to hit the letter x to confirm once again.

After this you'll be in the menue for the adventure, and sinse you've
already run vi mode, you won't have to go through the other screens again.

to activate a menue option, simply type it's letter and hit enter. So the
first option is select a pregenerated c character (in the main eamon
deluxe you create your own, but this is stand alone so yu choose a predone
one).

Hitting enter will take you to the character select option sinse that's
first on the menu which is what I suspect you did.

After you've selected your char, use the start adventure option (the 4th
down I believe), and the adventure will start, where upon it plays the way
you'd play interactive fiction, accept that you have to toggle your virtual
curser on and off to read the screen.

Okay, I got the stand alone demo of an emon game to run, for some unknown
reason, but I'm not complaining, well, kind of, more of a whining now.
Dark, you said to select the VI something or nother, and when I use my
virtual mouse, I can see an option for VI support or something like that.
But, hitting the virtual mouse left and right buttons don't do anything,
and hitting enter lets me decide which character to play. But, there is
no other option to actively select from. I had to enter Task manager to
shut the window down, because I couldn't get the quit option on the window
to work.

Hi Kieth.

it certainly wouldn't be a jaws command because I'm running supernova :D.

it's not a supernova command either however, it's a general windows command

Hi kieth.

very simple, i believe you just opened the wrong file. In say the eamon
deluxe demo adventure folder there are two exe files, one just called
"eamon deluxe demo adventure" and one called "eamon deluxe demo
adventure vi mode"

Obviously you want the vi mode one, sinse the other will open up with
dosbox and that is! incompatible with all screen readers.

Once you run that file a console window should appear that you can
read with the window eyes curser asking if you want to activate vi

Re: [Audyssey] Just tried an Iphone, my thoughts and questions

2012-10-11 Thread Trouble
Just to set a few things straight here. You don't
have to convert if not want to. I have many of
mp3 files on iPhone and iPod doing just fine.
Also have complete books and what ever in mp3.
But I mostly like it for backing up everything
including my games. When they are put back on you
are where you left off in game. Like having two types of save.

At 11:18 AM 10/10/2012, you wrote:
If you add the folder the books are in to the
ITunes library ITunes will prompt you to convert
those files to the ITunes format. Don't worry
though, they'll still play just fine on your
computer and not just in ITunes. Anyway say yes
to the convertion. THe next time you sync your
device with ITunes the books should be copied to
it. Granted doing it manually this way can
sometimes cause weird problems where a book gets
copied to the IPod but it's listed as unknown.
However if you have, say a book on CD, and ou
rip it directly into ITunes itself that will not
happen. The only downside is that you do have to
rip each disc individually and then have to play
it individually as well. If there's a more
convenient way to do this I don't know. But I
too would be interested in more accessible IOS games.

I've personally had very little trouble with ITnes. Then again I use
Window-Eyes, which is actually the screen reader Apple seems to recommend
for the Windows version of ITunes. But I'm able to sync my IPod Touch and
IPhone quite easily with ITunes since at least to a certain degree you do
actually have conrol over what you put on your device. I can tell ITunes to
put all Audiobooks on the IPod Touch but not on the IPhone itself. The only
problem is that if I have Apps in m ITunes library that I want on the IPhone
but not on the IPod Touch I have to actually delete them from ITunes before
the next time I sync the IPod. ther than that though I find ITunes to work
fairly reliably. Touch

Hi scot.

that is good to know, thanks. At least I should get any itunes related
updates with supernova sinse I now have version 13, though supernova doesn't
tend to change too much based on it's scripts the way say jaws does.

The itunes thing is just a thought, but it's the one thing that slightly
puts me off running out and buying a phone, sinse I did! want it for
listening to the music and audio books I have on my pc.

As to the price, well though it's a lot well I don't mind paying that sort
of cash if I get several years use out of the thing, plus, the chap who's
phone I examined paid ^£30 for the handset and then was on a £40 a month
contract for two years, which worked out more expensive (my currentphone
contract is £10 a month).

My original laptop that I got in 2000 cost around £700 (yes, they were that
expensive back then!), but it served me extremely well for the next five
years, being used literally on a dayly basis, so I'm pretty happy that I got
my money's worth.

My second laptop that I got in 2005 cost around £350, but once again, it was
completely used until 2010. indeed, it's still in full working order accept
for the headphone socket (it's really irritating they can't be replaced).

So I don't mind paying for something as long as it's something I use a lot,
and it sounds like that with the Iphone, indeed my brother paid that for his
and has used it extremely frequently for the last three years.

Beware the grue!

2012-10-11 Thread Trouble
You must have to much running in background, not
much ram, or old version of screen reader. No problems with it here.

Re: [Audyssey] emon deluxe stand alone adventure issue

2012-10-11 Thread Keith
Dark, I did as you said and the open application dialog box opened. I hit R
to run and nothing happened. The window/folder that has the emon folder and
the two .exe files are on the screen, but nothing else.

Guess I'll just give up on trying these demos. Not worth the hair pulling.
And, as they say, if you don't know what you're missing, then you don't
have any knowledge of whether you are going to miss it. (In other words,
ignorance is bliss).

Hi kieth.

very simple, i believe you just opened the wrong file. In say the eamon
deluxe demo adventure folder there are two exe files, one just called
"eamon deluxe demo adventure" and one called "eamon deluxe demo adventure
vi mode"

Obviously you want the vi mode one, sinse the other will open up with
dosbox and that is! incompatible with all screen readers.

Once you run that file a console window should appear that you can read
with the window eyes curser asking if you want to activate vi
compatibility mode. From there, follow the instructions and you should be
fine.

I'd suggest you use a mouse cursor of some sort. You're probably in a
command line window. In order to leave it, type exit and hit

enter.

Re: [Audyssey] Question about formats on Baf's Guide to theIFArchive

2012-10-11 Thread dark

Hi Kieth.

I suggest you do find a way of running those, sinse Eamon eluxe is basically
a big collection of the same thing, therefore it would be bad if you can't
run them. have you tried hitting alt enter? sometimes they have a nasty
habbit of full screening things, but it's easily fixed.

Other than that though i'd highly recommend dropping frank an E-mail, after
all he is! making the game and appreciates bug reports.

But I eagerly await the resease of the emon deluxe program

Hi kieth.

that is a question with a complicated answer.

the bad news is that the only way to play them is with an aple Ii
emulator, and those don't output screen readable text.

the good news however is that Eamon deluxe is currently in developement,
which is an eamon upgrade that will run on windows xp and is intended to
run all the classic eamon adventures. It even has a screen reader
friendly format that redoes the menues in a way that is readable with a
virtual curser.

Eamon deluxe 5.0 is currently in developement and is being beta tested by
myself and several others.

some stand alone Eamon deluxe adventures can be found on
http://www.eamonag.org/pages/eamondx.htm

If however you'd like a copy of the beta, send an E-mail to
eamondel...@gmail.com

I'd highly recommend eamon. it was a text adventure rpg system. it has a
simple parza but one which can still create puzzles without! uess the
verb or other horribleness, it has combat, companions and other fun
stuff, and adventures range from simple 10 minute dungeon hacks to full
on epic quests that take hours to finish.

Writing of course varies with the author, though some I've played have
been fantastically wr written.

Best of all in my book is the fact that you can go through multipel
adventures with the same character, gaining treasure, then coming back
to the guild of free adventurers after each outing to put your money in
the bank or even spend it on better weapons or improving your stats.

There are even people still writing adventures for Eammon deluxe today,
with three new ones produced this year, plus, frank black the developer
as he converts classic apple adventures to eamon deluxe is making several
improvements and changes along the way as well.

I'd certainly recommend it if you like rpgs.

Beware the grue!
