Re: [Audyssey] Top Speed 4? Other Racing Games
There is. It's called Formel 1 Spirit. There are no other cars to race against, so it gets boring after a while, but the driving physics are spot on as far as I can tell. Also it's not the most accessible game in the world, that's for sure. The dev knows, and maybe we'll see something new soon? Other Racing Games Hi guys, First of all, thanks for the tracks man. I missed some of those, especially the fast ones that handle nicely. Is this game still under development--is there ever going to be a TS 4? I think the biggest issue I have with every racing game I've played is that when you turn the wheel or whatever, you simply slide in the direction you turn. I am longing for a game that uses real driving mechanics. What I mean is, if you're driving down a straightaway and there's a left turn coming up, you turn left. Then you go out of the turn, and chances are that in the real world you wouldn't be facing exactly down the street. You would find yourself drifting to one side of the road or the other as often as not, unless your aim was perfect. Also, I've been told that little bumps and imperfections in the road alter your course too. I used to put my hands on the wheel when Dad drove, and he was always making tiny course adjustments. Finally, the last thing I'd like to see in TS4 if it ever comes out is the ability to pass other cars. That is, once you've done a complete lap around them you should be able to catch up to and pass them again. This is one of the things I like about Jim Kitchen's original Mach1 game, and would love to see it in TS4. By the way, these features are present in Crazy Drivers, but it's not really a racing game. As soon as I can get joystick/wheel support, I'll release the alpha to you all... but then I'm going to take a time out and learn VB.net and XAudio2 if I can. Meantime, I hope you'll have a bit of fun with CD. --- Gamers mailing list __ Gamers@audyssey.org If you want to leave the list, send E-mail to gamers-unsubscr...@audyssey.org. [Audyssey] Crazy Drivers Update
I've come a long way since beginning this game just one week ago. Of course, it's based on the Soundscapes engine I have been designing, but the whole idea of driving is quite new to the engine pardon the pun. Driving with the mouse or keyboard was easy. I wasn't yet panning the position of the car to indicate whether and when it's in the center of the lane, instead checking my angle every now and then. Also, the angle didn't really change, because I didn't hit the turn keys. Now though, I've implemented support for joysticks and, my fave, driving wheels. Now driving is a whole new challenge. Next up I'll be adding positional panning so I can hear where on the road I am. Here's where some user input comes in. I think I know how I'm going to play it, but we'll see what thoughts you have. One thought I was that if the main character is a cop, people would just naturally get out of his way. The problem is though that the water supply has been laced with a powerful psychoactive chemical, and nobody knows it. All anybody knows is this incredible urge to speed, and they don't care if they crash into a cop. (Also that would just be boring.) The second thought I had is to give the player a special lane which, as long as you were centered properly, you'd be safe. It would be a safe lane, true, but also very narrow. Finally, and this is what I'm thinking of doing, is just centering the car's sound on the right lane, just like in American driving--and if you're not paying close enough attention and crash, you crash. Also, I'm thinking about doing something that was done in Need for Speed Suburban. In that game you had a fuzzbuster, (radar detector,) that went off when police were near. The closer they were, the faster it would beep. Once they pass you and catch you speeding they turn on their sirens and come after you in earnest. That alone made NFS worth playing. There are some problems with this though. First, a lot of cars are speeding in all directions, so why would an officer single you out for speeding? Second, you're on a vigilante mission to catch bad guys, and even though the cops don't exactly approve they aren't trying to stop you either. I have story lines a'brewin' that might solve this too, but what do you think? Anyway, I'm actually surprised about how far I've gotten this game already. It's no where near a done game of course, and if I decide to learn VB.net I'll have to redo the whole thing from scratch... But first things first--going to bed. It's late. Then, tomorrow, God willing, positional audio for the car--oh yes, and brakes! --- Gamers mailing list __ Gamers@audyssey.org If you want to leave the list, send E-mail to gamers-unsubscr...@audyssey.org. Hi Lindsay. There are several directories of online games, however the problem is they lump say completely flash based games in with standard brouser ones, and also these days games might use ridiculously complex html programming or ajax which may or may not be accessible. Also bare in mind there are a surprising amount of online games which just follow the storm8 model, ie, pick an existing game with modular game code and rewrite it. This works alright for some games who've made such heavy modification they are! different, eg, twilight heroes as opposed to Kingdom of Loathing, however many others are pretty blatant about their modding, (there are so many torn city or eternal duel clones it's rather ridiculous). This isn't to say searching google or directories can't! yield some decent games, I recently found one called the reborn for instance, just prepare to have to go through a lot of stuff that is either inaccessible or thinly disguised mods before you find something playable. The best entry for online games is the one at www.whitestic.co.uk, which are games people have tested and played, indeed there are a fair few there which need audiogames.net entries. Hth. Re: [Audyssey] BA games on iPhone, was: RE: The Apple iphone, was RE: building in the storm 8 games.
Hi Che, I can just imagine a game like RR2 on iPhone. That would rock--tilt the device to steer, lift it quickly to jump, that kind of thing. As far as interface goes, I agree 1000%. If you take a game like Code Name Cygnus and match it with a similar game for the sighted, well there is just no comparison. My daughter was playing a spy game and it had so much speech that i really think it would be a snap to make accessible. You had to do things like touch where you want to go next, then to get into a building you went to a payphone, touched the pouch with the spy's gadgets, then touched the phone number, which was read aloud. Then you walked into the phone booth and actually dialed the number. I could never quite find the gadget pouch, but had all kinds of fun dialing fony phone numbers into it. Anyway, content is definitely not everything in the game, and a game based on content alone is not very replayable. Take Freeq. It's definitely one of the best games for iPhone to date, but since the number of scenarios is limited so is its replayability. Now let's have a look at something like Mouse Kick. Very little content--maybe too little, and I would say it has as much replay value as Freeq, but obviously for hugely different reasons. My conclusion, then, is that we need games to meet somewhere in the middle. Content plus interface plus great sounds equals a kick-butt game. Games like Mousekick have proven that a great interface isn't impossible to design. Games like Freeq have proven that over-the-top productions in a game work, so what I'm wondering is, who will be the first to truly put it all together? Check out my games at www.ThePionEar.net and my music, and that of my band, at www.ThePionEar.net/BlindLabyrinth.html . Also, check out, The Believer and Skeptic Show, at iTunes! Hi Cara and all, Just wanted to let folks know I answered Cara off list, and I am going to be taking another stab at iOS development once I finish rr2 and online cribbage, both of which are very close to full deployment at long last. I think some very interesting audio games have been released for iOS, but the ones I've played and enjoyed were more about content than interface. For instance, Freeq is really interesting and very well executed, but its basically a choose your own adventure book in audio game form. With the technology that is available for iOS, some really cool interface options are out there that haven't been taken advantage of, at least not that I have seen. Blind spot gave it a shot with the compass being used to navigate , but in my estimation fell short of an engrossing title. I realize it is very easy for me to sit here and point out the shortcomings of other titles, having created exactly nothing myself for iOS, but I am huge on interface, strategy, and an immerssive experience, and I just think we haven't yet turned the corner on this type of game for the VI community. Also, although I have some ideas for a couple of mobile based audio games, I am a really long way from being able to produce them, and as I did with learning dot net, I am going to start with something really simple. Before I did rail racer, I made a simple and stupid cockroach shoot em up, simple rotate, fire and reload kind of thing, and for what it is worth, I strongly suggest anyone looking to develop any kind of software make sure you can crawl before you try to run. A lot of times, folks have a grand idea in mind, and set out to conquer that idea before they even learn how to do the basic coding, leading to frustration and failure. Anyhow, didn't mean to go off on a rip there. Bottom line, I really hope BA is headed for mobile development in the future, but I'll be releasing some free educational apps first hopefully and try to build on that, there seems to be a real vacuum for educational stuff for blind children and iOS, and that is a shame, as iOS makes for a killer educational platform for kids. Stay tuned. Yes Darren, it's good to maintain the directory, and Tom Lorimer is a very nice chap who appreciates knowing about knew games, indeed I informed him of a couple just yesterday. I actually really admire Whitestick as a site. It was a random advert in an otherwise highly useless braille magazine that allerted me in 2003 to the site and the idea of games on a pc, and it was through that list that I played games like Logd, Ashes of Angels and Sryth, not to mention my first taste of interactive fiction thanks to Tom's Text adventures page. It's still a great resource, and I've been quite surprised how Tom's expanded it, indeed when he wrote a full new directory after I let him know about the ffproject site just for online gamebooks it was something of a shock, (I just thought he'd list the main site url somewhere). Hth. Re: [Audyssey] Another question on Self-destruct.
(Where is the Self Destruct keygen on Vista?) Should be in the same place, C:\Program Files (x86). Windows should still be able to fix the shortcut if you run it. What does it say instead? Re-run the installer as admin. Does that help? The game works flawlessly on XP even with the missing shortcut. I expect that the game is just another victim of new Windows versions. Sadly the developer didn't offer very many options in the installer which, quite apart from being very annoying, means that this will probably not get fixed or be fixable now that it's abandonware. --- Gamers mailing list __ Gamers@audyssey.org If you want to leave the list, send E-mail to gamers-unsubscr...@audyssey.org. Re: [Audyssey] GigaPack for Top Speed 3?
well anyone can download, but just know that it won't stay up. If my limit is exceeded and I am banned it will be deleted as I don't want want to be dropped from dropbox. If my folder is full it will go to. If no one else asks for it anymore it will go, and if after a while I forget what is in my folder and nothing asking about it anywhere is round it will go. Its up, but don't count on it staying up for all time. I need to be carefull, as a friend got me banned by multiply downloading the file again and again using my limit up. True had had a connection issue but I already got 2 3 day banns in the last year and I don't want to get to a level where I simply can't dropbox.
