Re: [Audyssey] Economics was This message is for Dark

2013-11-23 Thread dark

Hi Tom.

I don't know how much Marx you've read, but actually he was quite aware
different people had different skills, and that cooperation was necessary,
indeed that's sort of the basic philosophy of a lot of comunist ideas. What
marx was against however were those cases, which increasingly happen now,
where rather than a person being assigned those parts of the production of
whatever the object is that are best suited to their abilities, they simply
do one job over and over again repetitively, producing one and only one
thing.

I don't know enough about cooperative coding to give an example, but lets
take carpentry.

If you had one person who was great at the technical drawing, the measuring
angles and the spacial logic, and another who was great at the manual
dexterity type tasks, eg, the hammering, sawing planing etc, then the two of
them could be quite cooperatively successful at building furniture.

What marx was against however was the situation most large companies use
today, where for example you have five people on one production line, and
one person just!hammers the same nale in the same place each day, without
any learning, creativity or use of their skills. Accroding to my software
designer friend, the coding version of this does actually happen, which is
rpecisely why he didn't go into game design and spent a considderable amount
of time looking around for a job that would suit him specifically, even
taking lower paying jobs that offered him more creative output.

Interestingly enough this principle has actually been applied several times.
Back in the 1970's, the National health service hear in britain used to have
one nurse do one thing. Thus, you'd have one nurse on say bed making, one on
feeding patients, one on medication etc, obviously however this got a lot of
Nurses quite pissed off since manifestly if you've spent years at medical
school and all your doing is making beds all day it's not going to be fun,
for all it was an efficient system.

That's why it's now changed to the modern system where one nurse looks after
perhaps six patients, doing all jobs that need doing, and for anything
he/she doesn't know or is incapable of doing, a Seanior nurse is on hand
overseeing with more experience.

this is also a case where controls on capitalism would be really helpful, or
at least better labour laws so that people get paid reasonably for doing
something repetitive boring or strenuous, indeed I often find it morally
quite weerd how the most arduous jobs in society are the ones which people
seem to regard as worth so much less financially.

Getting back to games, another interesting consequence that Marx himself
noted however with the production line model is lack of creativity, and
according to recent reports of the games industry that is actually happening
fairly often these days.

Well if the buttons are readable with vo that might be helpful.

Note that when I say accessible I use it in the sense of equal effort to a
sighted player, not merely playable.

yeah, I’m with Darren on that. It'’s a challenge, but not inaccessible. The
buttons have a standard position that you just have to get used to. having
VO on till you get used to it helps.

Hi Teresa.

It's basically an interactive audio drama with stats like the choiceofgames
titles, so you hear a scene and make choices over what happens.

The two cool things are firstly that you are a james bond style spy! which
is awsome, and secondly that you can actually input commands by speaking as
opposed to using Vo, which is rather fun, or at least I found it so when I
tried the prologue.

It's free to download the application itself and play the prologue, then
basically you pay for missions within the ap. Mission 1, (which as Charlse
said has just been completed with all five episodes), and then mission 2
when it comes out.

Hth.

it'll be getting an entry on audiogames.net soon.

All the best,

Dark.

[Audyssey] Wrecking Ball v2 about to be released, feedback sought

2013-11-23 Thread Ken Downey
I'm about to release Wrecking Ball v2. I've squashed a lot of bugs in this
version, introduced a new laser gun bonus that allows you to destroy entire
columns at a time, as well as a jynx that shrinks the length of the table. I've
increased the default table length for the game, so that the ball doesn't come
back at you so fast when you hit it, but if you shrink the table too many times
you're going to have a tough game to play. I've also shrunk the default paddle
size.
Do to the laser bonus, the use of the mouse has become essential. The
alternative would be hitting the arrow keys, holding them down for who knows
how long, then trying to shoot out the columns, and that seems tedious, but if
you have ideas I'm open to implementing them.
So what I'm wondering is, what kinds of features do you want to see? Note: This
is and probably will always be a single player game, as I'm not going to waste
my time learning any new VB6 code. If I learn any new code it'll be for VB.net.
However, I would like any ideas about extra levels, bonuses, jynxes, and so on.
I remember that in some Breakout games, there was a mode where the walls would
move closer and closer together, and I may do something similar.
So if you guys have additional ideas, I'd like to hear them, especially if you
used to be sighted and loved playing Pinball, Pong, Breakout etc. This goofy
game has been under development since 2005, and all I can say is that I'm glad
I never charged for it. It's finally very close to complete though, thank
goodness!

Nice to hear you are updating this audio classic. One thing, gamepad

Re: [Audyssey] Wrecking Ball v2 about to be released, feedback sought

2013-11-23 Thread Charles Rivard
This is just my opinion, and is given before trying out the new update: Not
sure if I like the laser gun idea. It isn't a part of a pinball game. As
it is right now, Wrecking Ball has the feel of a pinball game, which I like,
and I think this would be a detraction.

so hide! LOL I keep trying it with VO on and off and it’s sort of six of one
and half-dozen of another. The buttons are at all angles to each other, usually
a Y shape or upside-down Y-shape, and that’s tricky for me. I veer on a
touch-screen enough as it is, which is one reason I have an iPod instead of an

good. I've gotten to Neptune's Lair.

2013-11-23 Thread dark

Hi charlse.

That it is doable I do not doubt, also I imagine the game is rather a lot of
fun, however whether it is truly an accessible game, ie, one that vi players
can play with equal effort to sighted ones I am not sure since that would
depend upon the level of learning involved and the complexity of the button
layout and how much it changes for each screen. It's probably something I
need to investigate.

Re: [Audyssey] Doctor Who 50th anniversary

2013-11-23 Thread dark

Hi Phil.

No spoilers please, I'm about to watch it as I've been at a music festival
all day.

A doctor who audio game would be awsome, but the history of doctor who
games has been pretty pathetic.

I remember in the early 90's, a doctor who game for pc got the lowest
ratings of any amigar title, since basically the concept of having the
doctor in a side scrolling shmup (and a pretty dire one at that), was
rather stupid. There have been some more adventure titles which worked
rather well, (I have seen doctor who if, but in mainstream terms there
actually have been full on complete audio visual interactive puzzle
adventure games0, and of course since doctor who monsters such as the
Daleks and cybermen are so vocally distinct, they'd be perfect for an audio
game.

An arcade game could be set in the whoniverse, but probably couldn't
feature the doctor, for example an arcade game destroying daleks as a unit
officer or maybe a human in one of the various Dalek wars (the Dalek empire
series from Big finish has more than enough galactic wars), not to mention
the time war of course, though the Doctor in an action game is less certain
for all that the third doctor was fond of car chases and using his venusian
akaido.

Thinking about it I did once play a rather fun little graphical retro arcade
game where you were the doctor, and basically the daleks chased you on a 2D
playing field scattered with mines, and you had to trick the daleks into
either running into the mines or shooting each other. That was pretty fun
for a five minute humourous break.

Then again, the Daleks are so awsome and powerful, having a one shot to
destroy style arcade game feels quite the injustice to everyone's favourite
pepperpots of peril :D.

Either way from what I've seen in retro games freeware games with doctor who
graphics and sfx are fine by the bbc, and I've not heard of them crucifying
anyone over copywrite, though of course it's possible.

Re: [Audyssey] Soul trapper, was code name Cygnus

2013-11-23 Thread dark

I repeat darren, my issure isn't whether it is possible!

Heck, it would theoretically be possible for a total blind play to play any
sighted game by saying learning hold forward for 0.1 secons, hold right for
0.2 seconds, press down twice etc such a thing would be ridiculos though.

it's the effort question that concerns me, not whether it is possible. This
is why I was wondering about whether the buttons were readable with vo,
since obviously with vo you can tell at least where the buttons are, and
thus have the same information as a sighted player for when you turn vo off.

2013-11-23 Thread Sarah Haake

Hi Ken,

I tried the first version of the game only once and that was quite a while
ago, so I don't know if the things I want to suggest here maybe already are
in the game. So please bare with me if I say things here that are no longer
needed.

I remember from the sighted version of wrecking ball a block, which gave you
a sticky padle. The ball would stick on it and you could shot it wherever
you wanted. Another block gave you a padle with double length, so it was
easier to hit the ball back. Also there were some kind of boss levels with
one big monster thingy, but I really don't remember how exactly they worked.

Best regards
Sarah

[Audyssey] Hack and Other Simple Games

2013-11-23 Thread Thomas Ward
Hi everyone,

Recently on the Audiogames.net forum Harrylst announced he has ported
Hack by Daniel Zingaro to the PC using the Blastbay Game Toolkit. For
those of you who do not know what I am talking about Hack is a very
simple but addictive game in which a player starts out with a Braille
N' Speak Classic, and increasingly fights more and more complex
notetakers by adding more ram and ways to hack the other notetakers.
As I have said the game is fairly simple, but despite its simplicity
it is a fun little game to play around with for a little while. As a
result I have considered creating something similar, but instead of
using notetakers I thought I might use something else such as robots
or perhaps a warrior you could train to fight in gladiator type
competitions. I am basically wondering if there is any interest in
such a game as this?

I know that such a game is likely to be fairly simplistic in nature,
would in fact be very basic, but I currently don't have much time to
devote to complex games like Mysteries of the Ancients or Raceway
right now. So if I create anything at all it has to be fairly simple
and easy to make. I realized that something like Hack is exactly the
type of game I could create that would be fun, addictive, and not all
that hard to make. Plus if I wrote it as a text based game I could
create versions for Mac, Windows, and Linux without too much trouble
which would make it available to pretty much anyone. Any thoughts on
this idea?

Cheers!

Re: [Audyssey] Hack and Other Simple Games

2013-11-23 Thread Thomas Ward
Hi Milos,

Not sure about strategy, but here is the basic concept as it stands now.

In Dan's original Hack game you would go to the store to buy upgrades
for your Braille N' Speak such as more memory and special attacks like
Warm Reset, Cold Reset, Macros, Unit Melter, etc. If I were to create
a warrior type game in the same style instead of buying memory etc
from a store you would apply experience points to upgrade various
skills such as slashing, stabbing, blocking, etc which would give you
a sort of RPG combat feel to the game. Plus you could specialize your
skill set for specific weapons like swords, knives, clubs, staffs, and
so forth. Each victory over an opponent would give you more experience
to put towards a skill upgrade or to apply towards better armor and
weapons. At least that is as far as I have taken the idea so far.

As far as sounds I am doing this on the cheap, but I imagine I might
be able to cobble together some decent sounds etc for a 1.0 release.
Some things like swords, knives, and clubs I probably have laying
around on my hard drive already.

Cheers!

[Audyssey] A funny Doctor Who related story

2013-11-23 Thread Stephen

Sometimes, Parents can say the darndest things.
I thought I'd relate to you a funny but at the same time embarrassing
thing that happened to me at the 40th Doctor Who convention in Sydney Australia
What attracted me to the show in the first place was the electronic
music and sound affects, from the moment I put my ear near the tv's
speaker at school and heard that eerie whaling song, I was hooked.

I was excited to be going to sydney to meet some of the actresses.
Unfortunately, my Dork. Doofus... duffer. dummy... er... Dad is not
all that bright and sometimes he doesn't get it quite right. He flew
down to sydney with me so that he could act as my sighted guide and take

me to the various exhibits.
We stayed at the hotel for 3 nights and on the last day there, one of
the last guests, Janet Fielding came in to do her talk about how she
got started with dr. who, about her home life in Brisbane Australia
and the crazy crazy people she met at conventions in the USA.
As you're probably aware, she's got a thick Aussie accent and she
also has a very... um... well.. bossy and.. Dominant personality!!
Anyhow, Seeing as I am blind, The organisers of the convention let me
meet and spend time with the actresses before everyone else.
Little did I know that I was about to undergo a lifechanging
experience and it would be one to stick in my memory for years to
come. I was in the room Chatting to Janet fielding about the show, I
like to get to know people by holding their hands, so I was holding
both Janet's hands they felt very nice and soft and I was so involved
in the conversation with her that I had completely forgotten that my
Dopeyer... dud.. Dad was standing right beside me!
Before I realised what was happening, Dad opened his trap and said
Stephen. oh. that's me in case you haven't noticed. likes to copy
and download dr. who videos from the internet!!!

Oh my God!! Dud!! you fool! Look what you've done!
did you really just say that? Someone tell me I'm dreaming!
Suddenly I knew I was in deep deep deep doodoo and it was judgement
day and I was going to meet my Maker! the room suddenly went all quiet.
Before I could say but. but... but but but... but Tegan Grabbed
my hands and proceeded to read me the riot act! Tsk, tsk tsk tsk
tsk tsk... tsk.. she chided. Thats copyright infringement!! (slap)
Naughty (slap) Stephen!!

wo!! she just smacked my hand!
It happened so quickly that it wasn't until long after the whovention
was over that I had a chance to really think about it.

Suddenly the room erupted in gails of laughter. It was so embarrassing!
Now every time I hear her voice on a dvd or the tv I'll always have
that fond memory. It's not every day you get lucky enough to end
up get smacked about by a female tv star!!
and just to make matters worse, the dr. who dvd restoration team was
in the room

as well, and they would've overheard and seen it all!!
and the moral of this story? Never invite your folks to a scifi
convention!! you'll live to regret it!

[Audyssey] Important! Temporary list shutdown tonight.

2013-11-23 Thread Thomas Ward
Hello everyone:

This is an important message to let everyone know that the Audyssey
site and list will be temporarily going down for maintenance tonight.
As many of you are aware there are some technical issues with the
Audyssey Mailing List, and they have persisted ever since we changed
servers a few months back. Various support specialists on the admin
side of things have checked our configurations, and can find nothing
wrong with Mailman or with our CPanel configuration. What's more no
other customers with Skynet Communications is experiencing the same
problem we are having with Audyssey. The conclusion is something got
busted when switching hosts, and the best solution right now is to
simply delete the old CPanel configuration, mailing lists, etc and
start over with a fresh account setup. We believe this will resolve
any and all problems created by the move between hosts, and bring
stability back to the mailing list. However, we expect this list and
the main site to be down for a few hours, but hope to have things back
up and running by sometime Sunday.

As for the list members with luck none of you should have to
unsubscribe and resubscribe to this list. Before we delete the list
and its configurations etc we will make backups of the list membership
so when we create the new list the list admins and I can automatically
resubscribe everyone all at once. About the only thing that will
change for you, the end user, is you may need to change your list
password as they will be automatically regenerated by Mailman when we
add you to the database of list members. If you don't get a list
subscription message with in the next 24-48 hours visit the Audyssey
site and manually resubscribe using the list home page.
