With the recent discussion of grammar and spelling I thought perhaps
people would appreciate the following, which a friend sent me a very long

Rules for Writers

1. Verbs HAS to agree with their subjects.
2. Prepositions are not words to end sentences with.
3. And don't start a sentence with a conjunction.

Hello Ken,

So far the game sounds good, but what I would do is not worry about how
much you can charge, but just wright it for your liking and what you would
like to see in a game. Then when it's all done I would make a mp3 or
something like that, post it and see what people think of it then and how
much they would pay after they get a taste of it. or even better a demo
copy. Maybe of a level or two, but like I said that is just how I would go
about it.

hI Ken,

So far from what you have told me the game sounds very cool. with out
trying it I would pay $10 at most. What I would look into is setting a timer
to close out the game in a demo. Like set it for 5 or 10 minits. just to
give people a feel for the game and what it has to offer. If the game is as
good as you say then you can get at least $15 for it or better.

Hi James,

Oh, that'll be the day. There is no way anything like that will ever
happen because there are too many incompatibilities between
programming languages and platforms to ever make something like that
likely. Writing something like that would be very expensive and time
consuming, and there would still require some human intervention at
some point to fix things the conversion tool didn't correctly convert.

The best answer is to come up with a decent cross-platform design in
the first place. For example, Draconis Entertainment has written
themselves a decent cross-platform engine that allows them to support
Mac and Windows with the same language, tools, and APIs which makes a
complete rewrite or conversion tool unnecessary. If more developers
did things that way it would go a long way to resolving the issue of
platform incompatibilities.

Cheers!

2013-10-02 Thread James Bartlett

Hello Charles,

I'm Using JAWS 14. As far as a spell checker I've tried to do a google
search for one. I found some, but the problem I keep running into is they
ether don't work with JAWS or they just flat out suck and only will correct
a 8th of what is wrong with my spelling. So it just takes up more space then
it's worth. I'm using my old computer till November. When I will have the
money to get a new hard drive for my new one. The computer I'm using now
only has about 5gb free space, it only has a 60gb hard drive in it. Till
then I'll just have to do it the old way and just keep playing around with
the word till it sounds close enough to the proper spelling.

Curious: What screen reader do you use?

As for the spelling of iPhone, it is such a small error to correct, yet it
is one that sighted people and blind people alike will notice, now that
you know about it, you can correct it with no problem.

And if you don't have a spell checker, there are free ones available from
the Internet. You can find them through a search engine. HTH.

Just for the record that is incorrect. There is no capital i in
iPhone. The correct spelling is a lower case i, a capital P, and the
letters h, o, n, and e are all lowercase. Hope that settles it for
everyone. Now, can we please end this debate?

Thanks.

I thought it was a capital I but I did not know it was a capital I and a

arrow threw the spellings it sounds the same and it does not enhance the
capital letter with higher pitch on all screen readers so you would not

Oh, that would be fantastic. With a tiny bit of tinkering, various
versions of Python will work on Mac in Terminal for some games, like
SoundRTS. Anyway, I've heard about Jim's games, and appreciate his sense
of humor. I'd love to play them.

Great little games to pass the time, but not so deep you will spend a

Linux and perhaps Mac OS can have something similar.

Cheers!

Hi,

I have put a new file up on my site.

File name: winmule2.exe File size: 454k bytes

Star Mule is a galactic drug sales game.

I wrote Star Mule with graphics in 1983. In 93 I converted it to a
dos screen reader friendly version. In 2003 I converted it to a self
voicing sapi5 windows version. The game now writes it's log file
(starmulelog.txt) to your documents\kitchensinc folder. I fixed the
select voice feature and it pronounces the planet types a bit better
now.

The winmule2.exe file can be found on my free windows sapi5 text to
speech games page.

So like you just got your star craft Operators license. So now you
plan to make some big bucks by cruising around from planet to planet
buying and selling drugs. Hopefully making money. Different drugs
are to be bought and sold at different types of planets. The planet
types are.
a. = Agricultural
c. = Cultural
i. = Industrial
m. = Mining
Of course you must pay your crew and for the fuel you use. The amount
you pay depends on the distance you travel.

Good luck and have fun.

Hello! For those of you who want to play brand new (and I mean just
released within the past day) text
adventure games, check out the Interactive Fiction Competition. This is
the 19th annual one, and
they never missed a year like some of the other more amateur text
adventure competitions. You can vote in
IF Comp, as it's referred to by many, right now. You'll need a user name
and password, but you can do it.

Are you ready for some text adventures?

Hi Michael,

Well, that's a good question. Off the top of my head there is the
Haunted House table in ESP Pinball Classic. There is the defunked
Chillingham by Bavisoft, and there is Zompocalypse by L-Works.

As far as text games goes one of the best for this time of year is
Night of the Midnight Sun. At least I believe that is the name. Its
about an adventurer who tries to slay Dracula, and along the way
he/she encounters an ice monster, a undead pirate, rats, etc.

Right now I am playing Alter Aeon which is full of demons, imps,
zombies, blood ooze, skeletons, etc. So you might want to consider
that as well.

Cheers!

Subject: Re: [Audyssey] Halloween games.

Well, if we're talking text games too, there are several really spine
chilling gamebooks on http://www.ffproject.com/

There is House of Horror and Curse of drumer, both of which take place in
a very freeky haunted house, there is also Soul tracker in which you play
a hard as nails professional ghost hunter.

Toomb of the Ancients, Garden of Bones and Bad moon rising all involve
breaking into toombs full of undead skeletons and bad necromancers. Lastly
there is Hellfire, where you enter a labyrinth trying to slay a demon of
chaos, which apart from being amazingly hard is also the most down right
disturbing gamebook I've ever played! really, even though I'm pretty
hardened to blood and guts there are some descriptions in Hellfire and
ways to die that just made me gouuur! it's awesom, in a rather disturbing
way :D.

Another site for choice based games is http://www.chooseyourstory.com/
this is a little bit problematic since it offers the tools for members to
write their own stories and there is frankly a lot of drek, however there
are some great horror type things. In particular I would highly recommend
the 2000 page zombocalypse Dead man walking! it's pretty awesome if you
want a more hands on experience than swamp in an interactive choice based
text game.

Lastly, if you have an iphone, choiceofgames http://www.choiceofgames.com/
have several good adventures about zombies, vampires and the like, both
produced by them, and in their hosted games where they let other authors
use their choice scripting to create games. I've heard very good things
about both choiceofzombies and zombie exodus, and they also have two
vampire themed games which I've not tried.

Actually thinking about the Iphone, you couldn't go wrong with the two
audio adventure/action games papasangre, and the Nightja from
http://www.papasangre.com/ both are pretty spooky in different ways,
pappasangre being a wander through a Mexican afterlife of the undead, and
The Nightjar being a survival horror on a monster filled spacecraft like
aliens. Papasangre particularly is noteable for it's lovely grim death
sequences, and need to creap around some pretty strange monsters.

Lastly of course thinking about audio games, you can't go wrong with good
old Shades of Doom, indeed back in 2005, it was the screams, the echowing
foot steps, the vil sound of the monsters and the horror atmosphere that
not only made me enthusiastic about the game but about audio games in
general.

Yes, we have seen distinct advances in fps games, and Shades does seem a
little limited in it's objects and enemies now, but for pure atmosphere
and being well put together you just can't fault it.

Hth.

All the best,

Dark.

the problem iv'e found with choose your story is that you really do have

Hi.

My only question to this is what are the chances of survival of a real
zombie crisis for those of us that have trained multipul times in the
swamp universe.

I do wander what our survival rate be.
Ok, so we are not really firing guns or killing zombies, but still.
If they had a real one of these with swamp running we would know exactly
to do in that situation.

we are blind, hopeless at fighting I'd think we would have to be on the

with swamp we have some sort of structure and I have listened to enough
casts to know a semi framework of things.
Alone though its clear even in the casts you stand little to no chance as

Games we wouldn't like to play:
by Phil Vlasak.

Game Over: The world's shortest cool audio game for IOS.
Well, there's not much to say about it other than I love the voice. You
just need to turn Voiceover off, listen, and touch the screen, and the
rest will make sense. It's a nice small 10 second game which is
enjoyable

to play through the first one hundred times.

Developer: WaterOnTheBrain Productions
Description:
A game that takes place entirely through sound. Over is a piece of
extremely short experimental storytelling. The narrative is told from
the

point of view of an angry man in an authoritarian society.
The game voice says Game Started. then it takes five seconds
examining

you through your camera, microphone and motion sensor. It detects your
breathing, heart rate, eye dilation and expression, determining if you
are

worthy to continue.
If you are not up to this challenge, the game will simply say, Game
Over.
Most people are not in the correct state of Zen. What is the purpose of
a

game that most cann't play? It teaches you the futility of life, that
no

matter what you do eventually, the, game, is, over.

Features:
Stunning Retina-ready HD graphics.
Up to ten seconds of game play.
Some angry guy talking at you.
No In-App Purchases, ratings nagging, or other interruptions.
No badges, achievements, or integration with game center.
Makes you feel like a sophisticated patron of the minimalist arts.
A serious, emotionally draining plot line.
You'll look silly while you poke at the screen and yell, trying to find
out how to get the game to play.
Game playable only on devices with IOS 8 and above.

Hi Charles,

The main thing you would lose, assuming you got a new 64-bit system,
is old 16-bit Dos support. This means old Dos games like the PCs
Panzers in North Africa, Kick Boxing, PCs Monopoly, and Any Night
Football wouldn't work. Also Eamon Deluxe doesn't work on Windows 8
either. However, the majority of audio games such as those from GMA,
Draconis, L-Works, etc will work on Windows 8 once you reconfigure
User Account Control, install VB 6, and basically install some older
components that don't come with Windows 8. So in terms of older
accessible games the loss is rather small.

As for the rest of the software you are running that depends on how
new it is, and when it was last updated etc. Obviously, there are some
things like Jaws that needs to be running at least version 14 to work
reasonable with Windows 8. Openbook needs to be upgraded to version 9
or later for newer versions of Windows as well. If you use say Nero
you'll need a fairly current version as anything released before 8.0
or so won't work at all on Windows 7 or Windows 8. As far as Microsoft
Office I think the minimum version that will run on Windows 8 is
Office 2003. I don't know since I have Office 2007 and it works okay
on Windows 8. I expect you may have to upgrade some software, but that
comes with the territory. Many things will work okay, and some things
won't. However, when it specifically coms to audio games most games I
have tried I've managed to get working on Windows 8.

Ironically, the only audio game I couldn't get working was STFC, the
version on my web site, but I have a new one in development to take
care of that problem. :D

Cheers!

Now there is a joke if not a real slap in the face. you might want to
think about this one Thomas. Yes give it xp support and build for the
other version as you wish. Charles and those wanting to stay on xp can.
Now here is the good part. Charles stated that they will pay for the
better version even if they already own the game for xp. you know and I
know that will never happen. The crowd on this list gripe about releases,
requirements and any problem or bug that comes up with a game. So like
other companies build for what is being sold. When there boxes die or a
virus hits from lack of support and they have to get new. You won't have
to listen to them say but it only works on xp. I have to give you some
credit here Tom, because your one of the few programmers out there that
tries to hear from all. Your willingness to take suggestions. Most out
there program and support what they write. They don't let the community
tell them what goes in a game, how to sell or what platform to build for.
So the community should be grateful for you, but when they do have to buy
that copy that runs on current versions of ops. That is when they will be
sending the hate mail and those on this list know who you are! So just
stop the thread because xp users are going to stay. The rest of us that
moved on will remember we are not paying for the game twice.

newer version that will probably have better performance and more options.

Hi Charles,

Smile. I was only joking. I wouldn't actually do that precisely for
that reason. USA Games needs to make money, and unfortunately we are
held hostage to a user base that will not upgrade to a newer OS for
whatever reason. The only thing we can do as developers is try to
support both as for as long as we can , and when that is no longer
possible then we have to make a judgment based on what will be best
for the product long term rather than the short term.

I can tell you right now selecting XP because it has the most
customers right now is not good in the long term, because in five to
ten years that situation will likely change. People will be running
something a lot newer than XP, and they will thank me for supporting
the new platform rather than developing for XP and not taking in
account any thought about tomorrow.

Let's give you an example, and I am truly interested to get your point
of view on this. I know you bought Raceway and Montezuma's Revenge
through preorder sales. You'll be getting copies of them when it is
released. However, imagine that PC you have breaks down and you decide
to go out and buy a new computer with Windows 8 on it. How would you
feel if I said, sorry, it doesn't run on Windows 8? You said you

Hi Josh,

I don't know if you have ever owned or used an Android Tablet, but I
personally think they aren't worth the price. The accessibility is
quite poor compared to iPods, Android is wide open to viruses and
other malware, and they can't be updated as easily as an iPod. As
someone use to say, you buy cheap you get cheap. In this case that
holds true.

Hi John,

I wouldn't say that. I can think of a number of programs designed for
Windows 9x that won't run on Windows 7. I can think of a few XP
programs that had to be upgraded when I got Windows 7 as well.

For example, when I got my desktop it came with Nero 6.5 and Power DVD
6 which worked well on XP. When I later upgraded that system to Win 7
I also had to upgrade Nero and Power DVD, because neither worked with
Windows 7. That's just one example of some software designed for XP
that had to be upgraded.

Hey Tom,

I keep meaning to make time to investigate Linux, because my only
impression of it is years out of date now. I haven't heard of any
screen reader users using it as their digital audio workstation to
make and mix music, with access to VST plugins and the like, and
that's kinda my main use of a computer nowadays. Of course, just
because I haven't heard of it being done in Linux, doesn't mean it
can't be done in Linux. You wouldn't happen to know anything about
that sort of usage would you?

Hi Scott,

Thanks for the information. I didn't know Apple had dropped XP support

really really old, and a lot of people are going to be dropping
support here and there. Everyone accept VMWare who stay in business by
offering a virtual machine for just about everything. :D

However, about the capitalist model you are right. It doesn't really
matter if it is Microsoft or Apple they are both the same from a
commercial developer standard. Its merely a case of pick your poison.

That is why there is a third solution, Linux, which is driven by the
user community rather than some all powerful money hungry corporation.
If the user is willing to take up an open source operating system,
customize it to is/her preference, he or she will do well. Otherwise
they will just have to pick one of the commercial developers who's
only objective is more money, money, money.

Just a small detail to throw into the mix. Apple already stopped
supporting XP via Boot Camp back in 2011. At the time I saw a few
relatively easy workarounds to get XP working again, but they were all
reliant on Apple still quietly providing a set of XP drivers on retail
disks of Lion. Tbh, I highly doubt that'll still be happening now,
what with Mountain Lion running everything in 64-bit by default. Even
if it is still the case, I'll eat my hat if it can still be done by
the time most of the XP hanger-onners actually attempt to make the
switch.

Of course, XP can still be installed and run via VmWare Fusion now,
and that'll be the same for years to come seeing as maximum
compatibility is one of the things that keeps VmWare in business.
Fusion will work a treat for the officy tasks that are still kinda
clunky or simply not doable with VoiceOver, and will probably also
keep some people content in terms of gaming, but you'll definitely
feel the difference when running any newer ttitles that tax the system
more through Fusion.

For what it's worth, the accessibility, length of support and rampant
capitalism on display doesn't seem any better or worse if you put your
fate in Apples hands. If you're fundamentally against the way the
technology industry is being run, then it's just a slightly different
flavour of doom, and you likely won't be any happier with Apple as
your evil overlords.

Oh happy day...

Suppose say winamp's next version won't work on xp, well is it's
next

version any better than the previous one? Heck, I don't have the latest
version of winamp now, mostly because what I do with winamp is quite okay
anyway, indeed winamp only usually gets upgraded when I can be bothered.

This is basically the problem with this philoosophy of you must have the
latest upgrade my question is well why?

I still own a snes, it still works, I still play games on it. Yes, there
are
plenty of other consoles with far better hardware and software, but none
of

them have as many playable games for me so why should I upgrade?

yes, in a few years I might be forced to upgrade if my computer breaks,
but

if I'm going to spend a lot of money on a new machine, and learn a new
interface I want some actual return on my investment.

This is indeed why I waited myself back in 2008, in the hope that
developers
would make it worth my while to upgrade, but as yet nobody has, heck, if
my
computer died I'd be very tempted to get another xp machine just because
I

just don't see any bennifit in all the sshenanigans with a new os, all it
would mean is losing outlook express, getting an inconvenient interface,
and

bad compatibility with several programs.

I freely admit this situation may change, indeed I'd be very happy if it
did

and someone used these supposedly wondrous new features to create better
games and software, but that just plane hasn't happened.

Besides there are workarounds for many of the things Dark and others

[Audyssey] praise to BGT

2013-09-08 Thread James Bartlett
Hello to all

I just wanted to give some praise to Philip Bennefall for not only helping
me with a problem I was having with registering on the BGT website, but doing
it so quickly. It didn't even take a minat for him to get back to me and get to
the bottom of it for me. another job well done BGT.

USA Games News

Sep. 7, 2013

Introduction

Welcome gamers to the USA Games News. We know that it has been a very long
time since our last news letter, and we felt it was a good time to send
out
a new one. So here we are with news and information about USA Games and
our

products.

First, we would like to thank all of you who participated in our informal
survey regarding the USA Games Evolution Engine a few days ago. We really
valued your comments and suggestions, and your responses really helped
give

us some direction regarding our engine.
More on that later.

Second, I would like to state that I am personally doing a lot better than
I
have been for a long time. Just to recap last year I had a number of
health
related issues from the common cold to a more serious situation where I
fell

down while getting out of the bathtub and seriously injured my neck. After
many months of rest and therapy I am now doing better than I have been in
months. Although, I am not 100% back to normal I am able to get up and do
some programming, and am slowly but surely getting our development back on
some sort of schedule. I can not say for sure when any of our products
will

be ready for release, but it should be enough to know I am once again
working on them.

Evolution 3D

A couple of days ago I sent out an informal survey regarding the future
of

the Evolution Engine. The basic point of the survey was to figure out if
potential third-party game developers wanted it to remain primarily a C++
based engine as it is now, or if they wanted us to branch out into .NET or
Python. The majority of you felt keeping it as a C++ library was the best
option, and that it was not really in our best interests to put out a .NET
or Python based engine at this time. This has really helped us feel
satisfied that the direction we are heading is a good one for us and our
customers, and for the foreseeable future we will continue to keep the
Evolution Engine as a
C++ library and will likely license it more as a C++ API rather than
an engine as such.

There are of course many good reasons to keep it as a C++ based library
rather than rewrite it as a .NET library or as a Python module. The main
one

is we have already put more than two years into development, the engine
library is stable, and rewriting it would only delay its release. For that
reason alone it makes sense to keep what we have and license that. The
other

reasons include easier access to libraries and APIs for Mac, Windows, and
Linux. Most libraries out there are designed for C or C++, and while there
are usually wrappers for .NET or Python that is not always the case. In
cases where there aren't available wrappers we would have to spend time
writing them to make them available to our .NET or Python engine when they
are instantly available to an engine written in C++. Factor in better
performance, better security, and less dependencies need to be installed
we

are pretty sure the community is right. Keeping our engine written in C++
has many advantages and few disadvantages. The only downside to this is
that

it has a higher learning curve for new developers, but that could be
overcome with some decent guides and documentation.

After all, one of the purposes of writing the Evolution Engine was to
simplify access to things like speech, input, sound, and so forth. All of
those things are wrapped using wrapper classes that make it simple to get
a
basic game up and running in a few ours in C++ as all the low-level code
for

things like DirectInput, DirectSound, Sapi, etc is wrapped up in quick and
easy to use classes. While not quite as easy as BGT, for example, it still
would not be nearly as hard as doing it all from scratch.

As many of you probably know all of our commercial games like Tomb Hunter
and Raceway are written using the Evolution Engine, and it is fairly
stable.

So I think once we figure out a few things we may begin

Hi.
I have been playing this mud for about 3 days or so.
everything seemed to be going well till I hit the graveyard quest.
I have gone through both buildings as far as I am able.
I have fought the evil ghool lord and got items, etc, etc.
I have gone through both buildings and I guess I am looking for some
ultimate boss.

trouble is I can not find it.
bar the 3 waypoints I have found I have no idea where else to go.
I really like this game but if I can't get round this soon, I may get
bored enough to just trash of my hdd.
its good and yes I can learn new skills, etc but really I am wandering
exactly where to go.
are there any good muds for mush that have good soundpacks and are blind
accessable that I can play.
I'd like to keep this going if I can but the feeling I associate to coman
with throwing in the towel is coming up.
I can probably handle it for another 2-3 days but unless I find some way
to make progress, I'm going to just quit.
the rating system on the quest says it shouldn't be that hard its got an
80-90% value of completion which possibly means I am being a dumb fecker
and not doing something right.

either that or I need to play another mud.
since I have been playing if games for about 10 years or so I suspect I am
missing something important.
also I have loads of items I have a bag to put some in but I never have
enough hands to get thigs and only found one shop which won't except some
of my items I wanted to sell.
I have found a couple extra weapons which look usefull only if I can
handle both of them but I have no more item slots to fill so I just use my
staff.

Hi James,

Yeah, it was available in most stores back in the late 90's.Best Buy,
Comp U.S.A., Electronics Boutique, etc all carried it as well as
department stores like Walmart had it. However, for some reason it
didn't last too long. I think Microsoft, shall we call them
Microshaft, probably put an end to the Winblows software by
threatening to sue them into the ground like they always do with
anyone and anything that remotely borrows the Windows trademark.

For example, a few years ago a developer came up with a novel idea of
merging Windows and Linux into the same operating system and called it
Lindows. They took Linux as the core OS but wrote a custom Windows
emulator on top so it would run Windows flagship applications like
Office, Internet Explorer, etc on top of Linux. Plus the desktop
looked a lot like MS Windows too. Of course, the idea was probably too
good. Microsoft and their lawyers descended on them like a pack of
lions and sued Lindows into the stone age. long with them having to
change their name to Linspire certain elements that made the OS
attractive to a Windows user such as the Windows look and feel had to
be scrapped in order to comply with copyright law. However, I digress.

Anyway, I am not sure what happend to the Winblows games, desktop
themes, etc but I am pretty sure Microsoft shut them down. Although,
it was funny while it lasted. LOL.

Cheers!

Hi James,

Ahem...We are talking about a text based user interface. You don't
have Windows menus and such and first letter navigation would be
impossible given the sheer size of the database of performers. You
have to enter the number associated with the performer and then enter
to select him/her from the list. Make sense?

Hi Charles,

Something like that. The truth is I got all those nutty names from a
program for Windows 98 that was essentially a joke desktop theme. They
called it Microshaft Winblows, and when you installed the Winblows
desktop theme pack it changed all the icons to funny names like
Internet Exploder for Internet Explorer, Outlook Distress for Outlook
Express, changed the Windows splashscreen to Winblows 98, and funny
things like that. It also came with some gag games like a dart board
with Bill Gates face on it, and a couple of other games like that. It
was hilarious, and I guess over the years a lot of that stuff just
stuck with me.

Cheers!

I would rather have the selections fore accessible with less clutter and
work for the gamer. I would go for option 2, because, if there are 60 to
choose from, and you find it on the second screen of 20, there's no need
to go further. Another possibility: If you know the one that you want,
is it possible to use first letter navigation to locate it? Or control
home or end to quickly navigate from top to bottom and then work from
there using the up or down arrows ot tab and shift tab?

Subject: [Audyssey] A Question About the Best user Interface

Hi everyone,

I have a quick question I thought I'd throw out here to the community
to see what you thought about this. As many of you know for a while
now I have been developing a WWE wrestling game in Python, that is
largely text based, but one problem is not all the performers can fit
on the same screen when selecting the challenger or the opponent for
the match. As the database of male and female performers grows this
problem will only get worse. Now, there are two ways of handling this
issue.

The way a sighted developer would handle this is they would table all
the options on the screen into columns and rows rather than put them
in a vertical list like this.

Select the challenger.

1. Steve Austin 2. Daniel Bryan 3. John Cena 4. Christian
5. Ted DiBiase Jr. 6. Edge 7. Mark Henry 8. Kane

Now, obviously the advantage of doing it this way is I could
conceivably squeeze a huge database of performers onto a single screen
simply by placing them into a table instead of a vertical list. I
should be able to place somewhere between 50 and 60 performers onto a
single screen. My concern though is that it will take more work
reviewing the screen to find the option for the performer you want to
play as you'd basically have to examine the entire table to find out
that a certain performer is number 36 out of 50 possibilities.

The alternative is I could create a vertical list of performers, but
split it up over several screens. That means if a database of
challengers had 60 performers you would get the first 20, press enter,
see the next 20, press enter again, and get the last 20 performers. In
some aspect sits more accessible, but I don't like it because I'd
rather see as many performers as possible on the same screen.

So any thoughts, suggestions, or ideas?

Thanks.

My favorite game to date is probably Aprone's swamp...it is likely the
first
and best of its kind IMO, it offers endless replay value, over 50
character
voices done by volunteers, a massive selection of weapons...and you can
play

online with others or offline in the customized maps all on your own.
Lately he even added a player verses player mini game where one can either
be zombie or human and fight the opposite faction.
I grew up dreaming to one day be able to experience games like Resident
Evil, Paracite Eve, Silent Hill, House of Dead, etc, and Swamp has thus
far

been a dream come true for me.
Also once you get used to using a mouse for gaming, and get a
pistol-shaped

mouse like I did, man, the Swamp experience is divine.

Ok, you asked for it, grin.

My favorite at the moment is tactical battles. It is both a wargame and
highly customizable, so that it covers any genre you want to create with
it.

Also, entombed is a very close second. I suspect any rpg game would be an
instant favorite for me. The customization of TB inches entombed out of
first place for me.

I suspect I would like time of conflict, but I have to sit down and
actually
play it. I think I don't right now, cause I would probably get hooked on
it

and there isn't enough time in the day to do everything I want, lol.

Other games I find myself playing more often then not are a lot of the
spoonbill games, like uno, word target, battleship, etc. I also like some
of

Jim Kitchen's games, especially monopoly and life.
I really like star trek final conflict, and I always figure out something
new that makes the game more fun every time.

Are you compileing a list of top ten games or something? Or is this an
appeal to have programmers focus on style of games? Just curious.

Well, that's about it.
Probably more then you asked for.

Hi James and all,

Well, it would help to provide the list with an error message and a
description of the problem. We don't have ESP, and can not read
peoples' minds. That said, Jim Kitchen's games do run fine on Windows
7, but the most common problems are either do to User Account Control
or missing Visual Basic dependencies.

Re: [Audyssey] A question related to RTS games

2013-08-19 Thread James Bartlett

Hi John

Have you ever played a game called Civilization? It wasn't a RTS it was a
TBS game. I was thinking of starting off like that. But making it a RTS
game. Civilization 3 or 4 I can't remember it's been a long time, but anyway
in the game you could go online and download mods and go online with friends
that had the game and play with them.

I have been learning C++ so I can start programing all the ideas I get in my
head. Some will bomb but I know I'll have at least one good idea. If you
would like more of my ideas and or thoughts email me off list.

Hi again John,

Just as a follow-up to my own note here, I thought I'd add that I
personally prefer not to have collision detection called from within any
movement code.

I think it's good practice to have your methods only doing what they say
they will. I.E. movement only moves. Collision detection only detects
collisions.

this way if you want to move your player for some other reason than a
traditional game movement, you can always call your player's movement
methods and not need to worry about some other method getting called
somewhere to get in the way of what you'd like to do. Does this make
sense?

Your collision detection method can either report back which objects
collided, or simply call the appropriate methods on those objects that
collided with each other.

For example, if two objects collide, then call the touch methods on each
of those objects. That way each object will do what it is supposed to when
it is touched by another object.

Hope this helps!

Have a great day!

Hello everyone,

As much as I hate being a Nazi about the list rules and guidelines
certain posts have forced me to conclude that the guidelines need to
be amended to insure the accuracy and validity of some of the things
that get posted to the list. Certain members, for whatever reason,
continuously post false and misleading information that could be
accepted by a list member who may not know any better and thus that
information could become harmful and detrimental to the reader.
Therefore I am proposing the following guideline to be added to the
rules which we may modify and discuss before it becomes official.

Because we get new members who may or may not know about the subjects
posted to the list, and this also may include longtime members who
just don't know what is and is not correct, it is very important that
you, if at all possible, research to verify that what you are about to
post is correct information. Incorrect information or advice on how
to fix a computer or game issue can cause damage to a list member's
computer or corrupt a game, which can cost that member money and or
headaches unnecessarily. If a list member habitually posts obviously
faulty information due to a lack of research, they will receive a
warning. Continuing the practice may result in a removal from the
list. This guideline is to insure that list members do get the
correct advice or help they need, and they will also know that what
they read is from a reliable source.

Any last minute thoughts, suggestions, or comments before I add this
to the official list rules and guidelines?

Thanks.

Hi Zack and all,

Well, to clarify things a bit, I am not so much concerned with
occasional or accidental misinformation as I am when that information
is patently false or just bad because the poster doesn't do his or her
research on a given topic. I think we are all prone to a bit of
misinformation from time to time like accidentally supplying the wrong
web site or email address when asked, and there is no harm done to
anyone. Its a mistake, and the poster can apologize and move on.. Its
an entirely different situation when a poster tries to answer a
question of which he or she obviously knows nothing about the subject
being discussed and someone else who knows better has to go back and
set the record straight. That kind of misinformation is just
irritating, wastes everyone's time, and shouldn't be aloud to continue
on list.

Cheers!

Hi Jacob,

Well, I regret to say I think your discussion of utensils was more
confusing than it needs to be. You lost me a bit there when discussing
the utensils and I know what inheritance is. When discussing
inheritance and multiple inheritance I think any examples should be as
simple as possible to get the salient points across. That's why I
prefer to use animals as a talking point.

For example, a master class might be called animal. It would have
functions for walk, swim, have hair color, etc. A subclass or child
class of animal would inherit the functionality of animal, but add or
build special functionality on top of it. Say a dog class would add
pant, bark, wag tail, wine, etc. A cat subclass would inherit the
animal class, but add special functionality like purr, meow, hiss, and
so on. Each starts with animal as a base class, but builds on it and
gets more specialized as you work your way down through the different
levels. If I really wanted to I could further divide my code up into a
master class like animal, then have a mammal subclass, with cat, dog,
and rabbit, as child classes of mammal. That's the easiest way I know
of to explain inheritance.

Cheers!

Subject: [Audyssey] Intro to game engine creation

Hi All,

-Thought I'd take a few minutes and write a very light introductory note
about the creation of a game engine, as this topic has come up from time
to time.

this is just my own style so feel free to contribute or critique. :)

People have asked of late about classes and how to organize them. I.E.
Player classes and such.

Let me start at the beginning.

• the game loop

this is essentially the heart of any game with any kind of real-time
actions.

The game loop is simply a loop which does only a few things over and over
and over again. An example might be:

Start of loop

render entities etc

Get player input

Perform physics / collision detection etc)

end loop

that's essentially it.

So what are entities?

I define entities as all of the elements within the game, and possibly
even the game world itself. This means the player, the items, the game's
characters.

So the first thing in my loop is to render everything in the game that
needs to be updated every frame. A frame is one pass of the game loop.

So everything is displayed (video or audio) then we get the player's
input.

Lastly I process the states of all of the entities and then when the loop
comes around again, everything is rendered in it's new state.

So that is essentially what keeps your game going.

Depending on the player input, the game may be paused, saved, ended etc.
When those things happen, the game loop is stopped and appropriate methods
are called.

Also, when the game starts, the game loop does not just start
automatically. Maybe you'll see or hear a logo of some sort, then perhaps
go through a menu structure to set up your game. Once that happens, the
game world might then be set up by loading a map or some sort of file.
Usually then, you'd be ready to start your game loop and the action for
the level would begin.

So where would the game loop and all this code live?

For me, I like to create a game class where the game loop would be placed.
From the game class, you would start your game and initiate your pre-game
menus etc and eventually start your game loop. Make sense?

• Entities

You can think of entities as your most basic game elements. I.E. every
single thing which exists in your game is an entity. Everything in the
game, and even the game world itself can be considered an entity if you
choose.

So, your entity class needs to be really generic while still providing all
of the basics that everything in your game needs. So what would this look
like?

Well, everything needs a shape and a place to exist. So I might define a
position and bounding box or sphere. In the case of the world, I might
have a shape defined by importing a map file.

entities also need to be able to move if they want to, so you'll need to
add methods in them to reposition them.

they also need to perform artificial intelligence (AI) as well as perform
actions.

Lastly, they need to respond to touches. I.E. what happens when other
entities come into contact with them? What do they do?

to create an entity class which satisfies these requirements you can add
both variables and functions (or methods) which all of the game elements
can draw from to do what they need to. In fact, since all elements of our
game share the entity class, we call that inheritance. All game items and
creatures and such all inherit from the entity class. Think of the entity
class as being the parent of all other game elements.

So this means that the variables and methods in the entity class are all
able to be used by every other class which inherits from Entity. Does this
make sense?

If we add a variable called health to our Entity class, then every class
which is an entity will have health.

Each entity may use that health amount differently, but they all have
their own amount of health.

If Entity can move using a move method, then every class which is an
Entity can also move.

Now each class may be able to move in a different way, but they all share
the basic ability to move.

I think that's all I'll touch on for now. I know, this one was short.
:) -Getting sleepy so I'll leave further discussion for another day. :)

Hope this makes sense and that others will share their own style / tips
etc.

Night All and thanks for reading!

Smiles,

Cara :)---

Game measures the height of phone tosses .

By Salvador Rodriguez

August 7, 2013, 7:30 a.m.
Apple has rejected a game app that scores players on how high they can
toss their smartphone in the air.

The game, Send Me To Heaven, launched this week and is available free
for Android smartphones. IPhone users, however, will not be able to
download the app.

Apple thought it was violating one of the rules for submission as it was
encouraging behavior which could lead to a damage of iOS device, Petr
Svarovsky, the game's developer, said in an email to The Times.

Send Me To Heaven, which Apple said was rejected for violating one of
its App Store guidelines, describes itself as a sports game since it
takes skill to throw and catch the device without breaking it. The app
calculates how high you throw it using the device's accelerometer.

If you try to cheat and throw your phone off of a tall building, the app
will know and show you an error message.

Using a parachute or a rocket will not bring desired result either,
Svarovsky said.

Svarovsky said it's important users throw their devices in a way that
doesn't cause them to rotate in the air or else they might get a score of
zero.

But before users can start throwing their phones, the app warns them to
be careful not to injure yourself or others.

Be always aware that there is enough space above you and around you,
the app says on Google Play. Do some training to learn right skills to
get best results.

The game also requires that users agree to a disclaimer before they start
playing. The disclaimer says that the user agrees the game developer is
not liable for any damages or injuries caused by playing the game.

Though the game is obviously risky -- and some would say foolish -- to
play, what with most smartphones costing several hundred dollars, Send
Me To Heaven has received many positive user ratings. Out of 101
ratings, it has 76 five-star ratings, the highest score users can give an
app on Google Play.

Almost broke mine playing, but it's fun to pass the time with, said one
user who gave the app a five-star rating. Not even trying for the high
score anymore, it is straight up phone-suicide.

After agreeing to the disclaimer before playing, if someone tries to sue
the developer or distributor of the game, the lawyer who takes the case
should have to pay the court costs plus a penalty because they are
supposed to be smart enough to know better than to bring the case to
court. Those costs are not to be passed on to the plaintiff. The
plaintiff should also be charged a fine for taking up the court's time by
bringing such a frivolous case to court. I think that if these practices
were done more often, cases such as the one in which the lady was burned
when she spilled the McDonald's coffee on herself would not be bogging
down our court system, and people would be held responsible for their own
actions.

Hi James,

Oh, the game is real enough alright, and I don't blame Apple for
rejecting this one at all. As you said there is probably at least one
fool, probably more, who would download the app, break their phone,
and then want compensation for it. There is no way in the world I am
going to try something that risky with an expensive smart phone.

Cheers!

My iPhone is too valuable, given its accessibility and functionality, not
even considering the cost, to be treated this way. There's no way I would
buy or even get this game for free.

Uh...Okay, I'm going to pay $500 or more for an Apple iPhone and begin
throwing it around like a beanbag. I don't hardly think so. The
developer obviously has a screw loose or has lots of money to throw
away on dangerous activities.

Cheers!

Game measures the height of phone tosses .

Apple has rejected a game app that scores players on how high they can
toss

their smartphone in the air.

The game, Send Me To Heaven, launched this week and is available free
for

Android smartphones. IPhone users, however, will not be able to download
the

app.

Apple thought it was violating one of the rules for submission as it
was

encouraging behavior which could lead to a damage of iOS device, Petr
Svarovsky, the game's developer, said in an email to The Times.

Send Me To Heaven, which Apple said was rejected for violating one of
its

App Store guidelines, describes itself as a sports game since it takes
skill to throw and catch the device without breaking it. The app
calculates

how high you throw it using the device's accelerometer.

If you try to cheat and throw your phone off of a tall building, the app
will know and show you an error message.

Using a parachute or a rocket will not bring desired result either,
Svarovsky said.

Svarovsky said it's important users throw their devices in a way that
doesn't cause them to rotate in the air or else they might get a score
of

zero.

But before users can start throwing their phones, the app warns them to
be

careful not to injure yourself or others.

Be always aware that there is enough space above you and around you,
the
app says on Google Play. Do some training to learn right skills to get
best

results.

The game also requires that users agree to a disclaimer before they
start
playing. The disclaimer says that the user agrees the game developer is
not

liable for any damages or injuries caused by playing the game.

Though the game is obviously risky -- and some would say foolish -- to
play,

what with most smartphones costing several hundred dollars, Send Me To
Heaven has received many positive user ratings. Out of 101 ratings, it
has

76 five-star ratings, the highest score users can give an app on Google
Play.

Almost broke mine playing, but it's fun to pass the time with, said
one

user who gave the app a five-star rating. Not even trying for the high
score anymore, it is straight up phone-suicide.

Hey all, Richard Moss just put up a really long, really good article
