Hi all.
I got to be a beta tester for this game. I like it a lot. For the first
time I can play a game while talking to someone on Skype. Just mute the
sounds and the only problem is the people asking what all that clicking
noise is I'm making as I use the buttons on my first generation Humanware
Brailliant32 to manipulate the shapes. I can't hear very well. I use two
hearing aids at around the range of 90db level. I can talk on skype to
people with good microphones and the right kind of voice and surrounding
environment, but I totally can't talk and do anything else with sounds at
the same time. No audio games, no email, no text chatting. Not gonna
happen. I have the Brailliant around to help me with that, but I find it a
little too clunky to use for reading emails and various other activities,
so generally the expensive display sits forgotten. That was until Dotris
came along. I found that Dotris after I got some practice in became
awfully relaxing to play. It's just enough challenge to keep me alert but
it's one of those games you can just sit back and enjoy, no need to be on
the edge of your seat.

I know the big issue with this game is that you need a Braille Display to
play it. I'm happy that I have one. I'm hopeful that soon the price of
them will drop dramatically, I'd like to see more people having the
ability to play games like this.

I had a good experience testing it. There didn't seem to be hardly any
bugs. If you do have access to a braille display, I surely recommend this
one. It's an all new kind of fun. There is a tutorial in the game that
walks through the basics of playing Dotris, and the braille display goes
through the motions being described. Very neat in my opinion. I would say
hopefully some day we can figure out a way to make an audio capability for
those who don't have the display, but right yet I can't think of how to do
it.

I played so much when I first got my hands on it I was actually thinking
about playing and picturing shapes in my sleep literally. My highest score
is 275, but that was done at a time that the game was a little easier to
play than it is now so don't consider failure to kick my butt in the case
that is so a bad thing.

Hi All.

I'm Nick from N A Soft and today I'm pleased to announce the release of
our first Game for the blind, Dotris.

Dotris is a computer game specifically designed for the blind which is
unique in the Blind Gaming arena as it is the only game currently on the
market that is played using a Braille Display.

Dotris is a puzzle type of game where the object is to build a wall of
dots on the left of the display using shapes which fly in from the right.
Described as strangely addictive by one of the test team users position
and rotate the shapes to build the wall and score points.

Dotris doesn't depend on any particular screen reader and is supported on
Windows XP, Windows vista and windows 7. It supports over 20 different
types of display from the vast majority of Braille display manufacturers
as it uses the same Technology used in the Dolphin Computer Access line
of products to control the Braille display.

I started to develop Dotris as a programming challenge. As a Braille user
I've wondered for a long time weather a game like this would be possible
using a Braille display. Well it can be done and it's a lot of fun to
play.

Rather than release the game for users to purchase or release it as
freeware it is my intention to encourage the use of Braille through the
game. With this in mind Dotris has been released as Donationware. This
means that there is know charge to download the game however users are
expected to make a donation to a charity chosen. Users are asked to value
the game and donate what they believe its worth to the Clear Vision
children's library. A charity which modify printed children's books by
inserting Braille text enabling blind children or parents to read the
books.

Clear vision is a fantastic service which has enabled me to be able to
read to my kids. I worry about the decline in Braille skills and trying
to raise the profile and money for the clear vision library is my attempt
to help slow this decline. As I used to hate reading Braille it's a
complete turn around in my attitude to Braille in the last 10 years.

Huge thanks to my volunteer test team and to the guys at Dolphin who have

Subject: Re: [Audyssey] Dentin's apparent space game?

Given that the game is just an idea and a plan right now, I can't say
a whole lot about it will or won't be. Like most of the things I
build, it will probably start out as something simple that gets
expanded over time.

What I have settled on is a flat, two dimensional universe, with
players starting roughly in the center near coordinates 0,0 and the
edges being at around coordinates plus or minus two billion. I'm
going to be keeping with the idea that one coordinate unit is about a
light year, to make things easy.

I've got code to create a handful of different types of galaxies,
which will be scattered at random about the grid. Players will start
about 3/4 of the way out on a 100k light year spiral galaxy, similar
to where we sit in the milky way in real life. All this talk of
galaxies is probably pointless, since as a player you're never likely
to even leave the starting galaxy, but if we want to expand into them,
we can. Even just the starting galaxy will have between 100 million
and a billion star systems in it, depending on what I set the density
factors for.

To create the star systems and planets, I have a very detailed
generator that has been lounging in my codebase for a long time.
Things like the graphics for the planet surface are probably not
needed for this project, which makes things a bit easier.

Here's a list of some other stuff that I'm pretty sure will be in the
final version:

- a couple different nebula types, which may or may not have
interesting effects on ships
- naming star systems if you're the first one in it
- submitting habitable planets as colonization candidates
- interstellar wormholes scattered about that allow fast travel between
regions

Because of the way the star systems are constructed, I'll have to
think about the best way to handle mining. I'd also like to add
random alien generation as well, but I may simply have to just go with
building them manually at the creator level.

This said, talk is cheap. I'll let you know more as I progress on it,
but there's a lot of other things in the way first, and I have to make
sure I stay on top of Alter Aeon.

accessible version of those, or indeed anything like it where you have
basic character rules, different textual events with different squares

fact sometimes I've wondered if Jim kitchin could create a fantasy
boardgame dungeon creator similar to talisman with basic character stats
and the ability to write different text descriptions on squares, or write
different random encounter monster or item cards, after all, as the
entire gamebook movement shows, rpg mechanics don't have to be hyper

And yet if you read the if community opinions of wishbringer, beyond zork
etc, they get absolutely slammed for their rpg features.

While I agree rpg mechanics are a preference, it is a little irritating to
me that the if community get so obsessed over their unlimited parza and
illogical puzzles, that they regard anything with rpg mechanics as
bad, check out the reviews for wumpus 2000, treasure of a slavers

It just rather irritates me that the one group of people who on the net

reason why I've got mixed up with the Eamon and gamebook playing

good! I mean their RNIB DAISY audiobooks don't have any DRM, and now this
about the Free Braille displays? That's just amazing!

Hi Nick,
Thankfully you're not developing a side scroller, arcade game, or FPS
title,
so you don't have to worry about that. Just because very little use has
been
made of Braille displays in the past 8 years doesn't mean you shouldn't
give
it a go. I would venture a guess that there are actually quite a few
Braille
displays out there. Rehab agencies purchase them for a lot of people here
in
the states, and some countries overseas--especially in Europe--will
actually

give free Braille displays to blind people. My wife and I own two between
the two of us, and I have access to four more of them at work.
Audio Tetris has been tried; it didn't work very well. Music audio Tetris
has been tried; it didn't work very well either. The spatial implications
of
a tactile Tetris would be phenomenal to work with. I think you have a
winner

of an idea here.
Good luck to you in your efforts.
All the best,
Ryan

Hi Nick,

Most of the accessible games out there use speech and/or audio for
feedback. The reason is that braille displays are extremely
expensive, and most blind computer users don't own one. The other
reason is that there has been a huge migration from text based gaming
to real time audio gaming and in a lot of cases the action moves too
fast to review the information via braille. Speech feedback is much
much quicker in an arcade, FPS, or side-scroller so most accessible
game developers don't bother with braille display support.

Cheers!

Oh I agree! :) I haven't used pocketmud pro much at all, because I really
don't want to have to go from the input field to the output part all the
time. Any recommendations or tips on using it?

yeah. i have tested the tmc mud client, and pocket mud pro. i have to
say, pocket mud pro is rather impressive. i have emailed the devolper
to see if they could put in support for voiceover to have it
automaticly read incoming messages while you are still focused on the
text entry field, which would make things a lot easyer. it can be
done, as i have seen other apps do it, but its a matter of waiting to
see what he says.
now we just need the sound pack from mush client ported to pocket mud
pro and we are laughing. ahahaha

Hi,
Braille plus is a portable note taker for blind individuals, which I

which works just like a linux telnet program would. By iOS, yes the
iPhone, iPad, and iPod touch are under that umbrella. There are several
mud clients for that platform, most of which work with voice over. The
ones I can think of off the top of my head are pocket mud pro, mud
master,

The Mud Connector game client, and possibly a few more I forgot.

By I O S, do you mean the iPhone? I'm actually not even sure what
these platforms are and/or how they work; for example, I thought
Braille Plus was a printing service. Can you give me a quick
overview?

Re: [Audyssey] Alter Aeon, Mush - z startup error

2012-08-04 Thread Roger devin Prater
Hmm, you could just skip that error, then go to the open dialog and find the
MCL file that way. I think it was trying to load the MCL from the creator's
dropbox, but failed, because Z is not a valid drive name probably, I'm not
really sure. But I know you can load the MCL file and it'll work fine.

I've got no help for you, save to say that I've scene this happening with
others on the game as well. If you'd like, I can
post a valid mushz light (without area music) on dropbox and you can use
the update feature to get the latest stuff.

Subject: [Audyssey] Alter Aeon, Mush - z startup error

Hi, I finally got around to downloading the mush-z mudd client and was
getting ready to start playing Alter Aeon. I started up Mush-z, and got
the following error:

---
mushclient
---
Z:\Dropbox\Public\mush\worlds\alteraeon\alter_aeon.mcl contains an invalid
path.

---
OK
---

Not sure what i did wrong. This is the file (the Mush z file) that is
about 300 MB large, and from the mush-z website that is linked from the
alter aeon page.

Any help would be appreciated.

Re: [Audyssey] How to start up Alter Aeon?

2012-08-04 Thread Roger devin Prater
Start Mush-Z, if you get an error just press space and it'll be gone. Then
press control+O, and go to the alteraeon folder in the Mush-Z\worlds folder.
In the alteraeon folder you'll find alteraone.mcl. Open that.
